Owners do have to be responsible for their own dogs. My dog and I go there everyday and responsible pet parents are not on their phones and paying attention to their pets. It's hot out there, bring water. I always bring 1 gallon Everytime I go, dogs are thirsty and need to be hydrated, sharing is caring. as a pet parent we are their voices and mostly all of them just like attention. The park just opened up, and there are a lot of improvements which are coming. Instead of complaining, please chip in for some volunteer work

Welcome to New Wave Pier Dog Run
For dog owners navigating the vibrant landscape of New York City, finding a dedicated and safe space for their beloved companions to play off-leash is truly a treasure. The New Wave Pier Dog Run, situated along the picturesque East River Esplanade, is quickly becoming that essential oasis for the canine community in the Murray Hill, Kips Bay, and surrounding East Side neighborhoods. This dog run offers a much-needed outlet for urban pups to stretch their legs, socialize with fellow canines, and enjoy the outdoors with stunning waterfront views.
While relatively new and continuously evolving, New Wave Pier Dog Run has already garnered appreciation from local pet parents. It’s a testament to the ongoing efforts by community advocates and the city to enhance green spaces and recreational facilities for all residents, including our four-legged friends. The very existence of this dog run addresses a long-standing need for more accessible off-leash areas in a district that has historically faced challenges with green space. Its development signifies a positive step forward in supporting the health and happiness of New York City's growing dog population.
The unique setting along the East River provides a serene backdrop, offering humans a relaxing environment while their dogs play. It's not just a place for dogs to burn off energy; it's a community gathering spot where pet owners can connect, share experiences, and build camaraderie. Despite being a newer addition, the commitment of the local community to its improvement and maintenance is evident, with ongoing discussions about enhancements to make it an even better experience for everyone. This dedication ensures that New Wave Pier Dog Run will continue to be a cherished resource for years to come.
New Wave Pier Dog Run is strategically located on the East River Esplanade, New York, NY 10016, USA. Specifically, it can be found between 38th and 39th Streets, making it a highly convenient spot for residents of Murray Hill, Kips Bay, Tudor City, and Turtle Bay, and Midtown East. Its position directly on the East River Greenway provides a scenic and pleasant approach for visitors, whether they're walking from nearby apartments or enjoying a stroll along the waterfront.
The dog run's location is particularly significant as it addresses a long-standing need for dedicated dog park space in this part of Manhattan. As Council Member Keith Powers highlighted during its establishment, the area between existing dog runs like Stuyvesant Square Dog Run, Peter Detmold Park, and Robert Moses Park previously lacked enough accessible and functional dog runs. The addition of New Wave Pier Dog Run fills this crucial gap, providing readily available off-leash play space for thousands of dogs and their owners in a densely populated urban environment. Its riverside setting offers both practical accessibility and the added bonus of refreshing river breezes and captivating views, enhancing the overall experience for park-goers and their pups.
- Off-Leash Play Area: A designated and fenced space where dogs can run and play freely without leashes during park hours.
- Separate Areas (Planned/Under Development): Future plans aim to include a designated separate area for smaller dogs, ensuring safer play for all sizes.
- Benches: Providing seating for dog owners and handlers to relax while their pets enjoy the space.
- Tool Shed: A dedicated storage area, likely for maintenance equipment and supplies.
- Trash Receptacles: Conveniently placed bins for proper disposal of dog waste and other litter, promoting cleanliness.
- Pet Waste Bags: Often stocked by the community or park volunteers, ensuring owners can easily clean up after their dogs.
- Water Access: While it's noted that owners should bring water, ongoing improvements likely include or will soon include more robust water access for thirsty pups, as it's a planned amenity.
- Riverside Views: Offers stunning panoramic views of the East River, adding a unique and scenic backdrop to playtime.
- Temporary but Growing Space: Initially established as a temporary solution to address the lack of dog runs, it has become a valued fixture with ongoing community support for improvements and potential permanency.
- Community-Driven Initiative: The establishment and ongoing enhancement of the dog run are strongly supported by local community groups and elected officials, reflecting a deep understanding of neighborhood needs.
- Addresses a Green Space Deficit: The dog run is a critical addition in a district that has historically had one of the lowest amounts of greenspace in New York City.
- Urban Oasis: Provides a much-needed escape from the concrete jungle, allowing dogs to engage in natural behaviors like running and sniffing in a safe environment.
- Easily Accessible: Its location on the East River Esplanade makes it convenient for residents of Murray Hill, Kips Bay, and surrounding areas.
- Poop Bags Stocked: According to reviews, the availability of waste bags is generally reliable, assisting owners in maintaining cleanliness.
As a public park facility, New Wave Pier Dog Run itself does not typically run promotions or special offers in the commercial sense. However, the true "promotion" of this dog run lies in the invaluable service it provides to the community: free and accessible off-leash space for dogs. This amenity, which is often hard to come by in densely populated urban areas, is a significant benefit to local pet owners.
Community involvement plays a large role in the dog run's ongoing success. Volunteer efforts are encouraged to help with maintenance and improvements, offering a way for passionate pet parents to "chip in" and contribute to their shared space. Occasional community events or clean-up days might be organized by local groups like the Alliance for Kips Bay or the Murray Hill Neighborhood Association, which could be considered "special offers" in terms of community engagement and enhancing the park experience. These events might involve giveaways from local pet businesses or opportunities to connect with pet-related services, although they are not consistently scheduled promotions directly from the dog run. For the most up-to-date information on community events or volunteer opportunities related to New Wave Pier Dog Run, local residents are encouraged to check the websites or social media channels of neighborhood associations.

Please note that specific phone numbers for individual dog runs are generally not available as they are managed under the umbrella of the New York City Department of Parks & Recreation or related organizations like the Hudson River Park Trust for other sections of the esplanade. For general inquiries regarding park rules, hours, or maintenance, the official New York City Department of Parks & Recreation website is the best resource.
For community-specific updates or initiatives related to New Wave Pier Dog Run, you might also find information through local neighborhood associations such as the Alliance for Kips Bay (allkb.org) or the Murray Hill Neighborhood Association. These organizations often play a pivotal role in advocating for and supporting local park amenities like the dog run, and may have contact information for relevant community leaders or volunteers.
For dog owners in New York City's East Side, particularly those in Murray Hill, Kips Bay, and surrounding neighborhoods, New Wave Pier Dog Run isn't just suitable; it's a crucial amenity that significantly enhances their quality of life. The need for accessible off-leash dog spaces in this densely populated urban environment cannot be overstated, and this dog run effectively addresses that demand. As one local pet parent emphasized, "My dog and I go there everyday," highlighting its role as a vital part of their daily routine.
Despite being a relatively new addition, the dog run already offers immense value. Its location on the East River Esplanade provides not only a convenient spot but also a picturesque setting, allowing owners to enjoy "Great views" while their dogs play. While some initial reviews note its current size and lack of grass, the community's proactive approach to its development, including "a lot of improvements which are coming," demonstrates a strong commitment to its future. This ongoing evolution, driven by local advocacy, means the dog run is continually adapting to meet the needs of its users.
Beyond the physical space, New Wave Pier Dog Run fosters a sense of responsibility and community among pet owners. The emphasis on "responsible pet parents are not on their phones and paying attention to their pets" underscores a shared understanding of safe and considerate use. The spirit of "sharing is caring" when it comes to bringing water for thirsty pups further illustrates the collaborative and supportive atmosphere. In a city where personal space is a luxury, a place where dogs can freely express their energy and owners can connect with like-minded individuals is invaluable. New Wave Pier Dog Run truly serves as a cornerstone for the East Side canine community, promising an even brighter future as improvements continue to roll out.

Jul 22, 2023 · RichGreat views and usually pretty empty! The poop bags are usually stocked, but the area is quite small and no grass.
Feb 08, 2025 · Paul VNo water for the dogs except the huge puddle after it rains. Many dog owners bring vicious, untrained dogs that attack other dogs and dog owners. People stand in the middle and wonder why they get hit by balls. It’s a dog run people, get out of the way!! Small dogs ALWAYS in big dog section. PLEASE READ PHOTO TO SEE WHY THIS IS DANGEROUS!! People play with broken tennis balls that are filthy, don’t even bounce, and pose a choking hazard for all dogs in the dog run and mini balls that pose the same danger, especially for large dogs.
Mar 16, 2025 · Joe BerracoReally small and the sound from the highway above is DEAFENING. We can’t play with tennis balls because the fence is so low, even a slight bounce leads to the ball being lost to the highway. We’ve lost too many…
