2 nice roomy areas with sidewalks and mature shade trees and filled with bark to prevent from being muddy. Also has bad dispensaries and disposal areas well maintained as well as waterers for people as well as dogs. One side even has an agility training playground. The dog trails are surrounded by grassy shady picnic areas with rest rooms, pretty walking trails around a lake and a county museum. To my knowledge it does not cost to visit unless you are going to the county museum.

For dog owners in California's Central Valley, Mooney Grove Dog Park in Visalia stands out as a truly exceptional destination for their furry companions. Nestled within the historic and expansive Mooney Grove Park, this dedicated off-leash area offers a unique blend of dedicated canine play space and the natural beauty of one of California's oldest county parks. It's more than just a typical dog park; it's a meticulously designed environment that caters to the physical and social needs of dogs while providing a comfortable and engaging experience for their human companions.
The importance of a high-quality dog park in urban and suburban areas cannot be overstated. It provides a vital outlet for dogs to exercise, socialize, and express natural behaviors in a safe and controlled setting, which is especially crucial for pets living in homes without extensive private outdoor space. Mooney Grove Dog Park excels in this regard, consistently receiving praise for its thoughtful layout, abundant amenities, and the overall pleasant atmosphere it cultivates. Its integration into the larger Mooney Grove Park also means visitors can enjoy a wide array of other recreational opportunities, making it a comprehensive destination for a family outing. Whether you're a local resident looking for a regular spot or a visitor seeking a perfect stop, Mooney Grove Dog Park offers a premier experience for dogs and their owners.
Mooney Grove Dog Park is conveniently located at 27000 S Mooney Blvd, Visalia, CA 93277, USA. This address places it within the renowned Mooney Grove Park, a prominent landmark in Visalia and Tulare County. Its location on South Mooney Boulevard makes it relatively easy to access for residents from various parts of Visalia and surrounding communities.
Accessibility to Mooney Grove Park, and by extension the dog park, involves a park entrance fee. As of July 1, 2025, Tulare County Supervisors have voted to eliminate general park entrance fees, which will make Mooney Grove Park free to enter. Prior to this, a general entrance fee of $6 per vehicle (or $3 for seniors/disabled persons) was typically collected, usually on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays from March through October, and potentially other days depending on the season and specific county park policies. It is always recommended to check the official Tulare County Parks & Recreation website for the most current fee structure, as policies can be updated.
Regarding operating hours, Mooney Grove Park itself has varying seasonal hours. For instance, in Summer (June 2 - Sept 4), the park is typically open Monday, Thursday, and Friday from 8 AM to 8 PM, and Saturday and Sunday from 8 AM to 8 PM. It is usually closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays during these seasons. However, some sources suggest Mooney Grove Dog Park specifically might have different or more extended hours, potentially open 7 days a week from 7 AM to 8 PM. It is advisable to verify the exact dog park hours upon arrival or by contacting the county parks department. Ample parking is available within Mooney Grove Park, with a newly developed parking structure near the dog park for specific patrons. The pathways within Mooney Grove Park are generally accessible, allowing for comfortable navigation to the dog park area.
Mooney Grove Dog Park provides a well-equipped array of services and amenities, designed to cater to the diverse needs of canine companions and their human escorts. These features contribute significantly to its reputation as a top-tier dog park.
- Separate Enclosures: The park features two distinct, roomy areas, one typically for large dogs and another for smaller or less active dogs, ensuring safer and more comfortable interactions among different sizes and temperaments.
- Bark Ground Cover: Instead of grass, the enclosures are filled with bark. This material helps prevent the park from becoming muddy, even after rain, and provides a cushioned surface for dogs to play on.
- Sidewalks: Integrated sidewalks within the enclosures offer a clean, firm path for owners to walk on while supervising their dogs.
- Mature Shade Trees: The presence of numerous mature shade trees provides abundant natural shade, crucial for comfort during warm California days for both dogs and owners.
- Waste Disposal Stations: Located throughout the park, these stations are well-maintained and include bag dispensaries and disposal bins, promoting responsible and easy cleanup of pet waste.
- Waterers for Dogs and People: Drinking fountains are available for both canine and human visitors, ensuring convenient hydration for everyone.
- Agility Training Playground: One side of the dog park features an agility training playground, offering stimulating obstacles for dogs to enjoy, enhancing their physical and mental exercise.
These comprehensive services, combined with the overall park setting, make Mooney Grove Dog Park a highly functional and enjoyable destination for the Visalia community.
Mooney Grove Dog Park boasts several key features and highlights that truly set it apart as a premier dog park in the Central Valley, making it a favorite among local users and visitors alike.
- Integrated within a Historic Park: Its location within Mooney Grove Park, California's oldest county park, offers a unique backdrop of majestic valley oaks, a lake, and scenic walking trails. This allows for a comprehensive outing beyond just the dog park itself.
- Spacious and Thoughtfully Designed Areas: The two large, roomy enclosures provide ample space for dogs to run freely. The use of bark instead of grass is a deliberate design choice that effectively prevents mud, even on cloudy days, maintaining a cleaner environment for paws and people.
- Mature Shade Trees: The abundance of mature shade trees is a significant asset, offering crucial relief from the California sun, which is appreciated by both dogs needing to cool down and owners seeking comfort.
- Agility Play Equipment: The inclusion of an agility training playground adds an extra layer of fun and challenge for dogs, providing mental stimulation and diverse exercise options beyond just running.
- Well-Maintained Facilities: Consistent feedback highlights the dog park's cleanliness and the good condition of its waste dispensaries and disposal areas, reflecting a high standard of maintenance.
- Amenities for Both Species: The provision of waterers for both dogs and humans, along with sidewalks for owners, demonstrates a holistic approach to user comfort and convenience.
- Surrounding Park Features: Beyond the dog park, visitors have access to the extensive amenities of Mooney Grove Park, including shady picnic areas with restrooms, pretty walking trails around a lake, and even a county museum, making it a full-day destination.
These highlights collectively paint a picture of a dog park that is not only functional but also a genuinely pleasant and enriching experience, highly valued by the community.
As a public facility within a county park, Mooney Grove Dog Park, managed by Tulare County Parks & Recreation, primarily operates on a model of providing free access to its dog park amenities, rather than offering commercial promotions or special deals. The significant "promotion" for locals is the inherent value of a free-to-use, well-maintained, and spacious area for their canine companions.
However, it is crucial for users to be aware of the general entrance fee for Mooney Grove Park itself. Historically, there has been a vehicle entrance fee (e.g., $6 general, $3 for seniors/disabled persons) on certain days, particularly weekends and during peak seasons. As of July 1, 2025, the Tulare County Board of Supervisors has voted to eliminate these general park entrance fees, making entry to Mooney Grove Park free. This change will significantly enhance accessibility and can be considered a major benefit or "promotion" for all visitors.
Beyond this, Tulare County Parks & Recreation may periodically organize community-wide events or initiatives that benefit park users, including dog owners. While these are not dog park-specific promotions, they represent opportunities for added value:
- Community Events: The county might host pet-friendly events, educational workshops on responsible pet ownership, or outdoor festivals within Mooney Grove Park, which would indirectly benefit dog park users.
- Volunteer Programs: Opportunities for residents to participate in park clean-up days or maintenance efforts, fostering a sense of community ownership and care for the park.
- Information Resources: The park serves as a touchpoint for the county to disseminate important information regarding pet licensing, local ordinances, or animal health initiatives.
For the most current information regarding park fees (especially if visiting close to the July 1, 2025 changeover), operating hours, or any upcoming county-sponsored events, it is highly recommended that locals and visitors consult the official Tulare County Parks & Recreation website or contact them directly.
For specific inquiries or to confirm any details regarding Mooney Grove Dog Park, including its amenities, rules, or operational details, the primary point of contact is Tulare County Parks & Recreation, which manages Mooney Grove Park.

Mooney Grove Dog Park is an exceptionally suitable and highly recommended destination for locals in California, particularly for dog owners in Visalia and the surrounding Central Valley. Its multifaceted appeal stems from a combination of excellent facilities, thoughtful design, and its integration within a beloved historic park.
Firstly, the park's dual, roomy enclosures, complete with sidewalks and mature shade trees, offer a superior off-leash experience. The use of bark instead of grass addresses common issues like mud, ensuring a cleaner environment for dogs and owners alike. The provision of waterers for both pets and people, along with well-maintained waste disposal stations, highlights a commitment to convenience and hygiene. For active dogs, the inclusion of an agility training playground adds an extra dimension of fun and mental stimulation, going beyond simple free-running.
Beyond the dog park's immediate features, its location within the expansive Mooney Grove Park is a significant advantage. This allows visitors to combine their dog park outing with other recreational activities, such as walking along the scenic trails around the lake, enjoying picnic areas, or even visiting the Tulare County Museum. This makes Mooney Grove Dog Park a destination for the entire family, not just the canine members.
While a previous entrance fee was a consideration, the upcoming elimination of general park entrance fees as of July 1, 2025, will make Mooney Grove Park, and thus its dog park, even more accessible and attractive to locals. This move by Tulare County underscores a commitment to fostering community use of its valuable green spaces.
In conclusion, Mooney Grove Dog Park offers a comprehensive, well-maintained, and enriching environment for dogs and their owners. Its combination of specific dog park amenities, integration into a beautiful historic park setting, and increasingly accessible entry makes it an ideal choice for any Californian dog owner seeking a top-tier recreational experience for their beloved companion. It truly stands as a shining example of a valuable public amenity for the Visalia community.
