I would like to give -5 ⭐️, but that’s not possible. Our first visit was a disaster. Today the place was closed for 2 hours because of spraying and I thought when we came an hour later they certainly would have cleaned up. Nope. Poos on the grass, pee everywhere on the walkways and a breathtaking stench. Never saw such a disgusting dog park. We couldn’t bare the stink longer than 10 minutes and left hastily! RH Johnson Rec Center doesn’t seem to have a heart for animals!

Welcome to Large Dog Park-Members Only
For residents of Sun City West, Arizona, ensuring their beloved canine companions have a safe, spacious, and consistent environment for exercise and socialization is a high priority. The Large Dog Park - Members Only, situated within the amenities offered by the Recreation Centers of Sun City West (RCSCW), provides just such a dedicated space. This facility operates on a membership-required basis, which for many locals, is a key factor in maintaining its quality and ensuring a controlled, community-focused environment for their dogs.
Being a "Members Only" park means that users are typically part of the broader Sun City West community, often implying a shared commitment to responsible pet ownership and adherence to established rules. This exclusivity helps foster a more predictable and generally safer play experience compared to open public parks. As one user noted, the park offers "Plenty of room to romp. Drinking fountain. Sunny and shade for dogs and pet parents." This highlights the essential amenities designed for both canine and human comfort in the Arizona climate.
While some past experiences, as detailed in one review, indicate occasional challenges with cleanliness, it's important to understand that public and member-based facilities, especially those for animals, require ongoing maintenance and user cooperation. The very nature of a members-only park, managed by an entity like the RH Johnson Rec Center, suggests a vested interest in addressing such issues to maintain standards for its contributing residents. This article aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the Large Dog Park - Members Only, covering its location, specific amenities, features that benefit locals, and details on how residents can access this important community resource.
The Large Dog Park - Members Only is located in Sun City West, AZ 85375, USA. More specifically, it is an amenity provided by the Recreation Centers of Sun City West (RCSCW), typically associated with the RH Johnson Rec Center. The RH Johnson Rec Center is located at 19803 N. R.H. Johnson Blvd. Sun City West, AZ 85375. This central location within the Sun City West community makes it highly accessible for residents of this active adult community.
Accessibility for members is a key feature. As part of the R.H. Johnson Rec Center's extensive facilities, the dog park benefits from a well-established infrastructure, including ample parking. Members of the RCSCW (Recreation Centers of Sun City West) can access the park as part of their community amenity privileges. Access is typically managed through the RCSC membership card, ensuring that only authorized residents and their guests utilize the facility.
The park boasts extensive operating hours designed to accommodate various schedules throughout the week. The "Large Dog Park (all dog park)" at R.H. Johnson is generally open from 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. from Tuesday through Sunday. It is important for members to note that the Large Dog Park is closed on Mondays from 5 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. for maintenance. These hours allow for early morning exercise before the Arizona heat sets in, as well as evening play sessions when temperatures are more favorable.
Its integration within the RH Johnson Rec Center campus means that members often have other facilities nearby, such as restrooms and walking paths, enhancing the overall convenience of a visit. The "Members Only" aspect significantly contributes to accessibility in terms of safety and a consistent user base, reducing concerns about unknown or unregistered dogs. Residents are encouraged to refer to the official RCSC website or their member guide for any real-time updates on hours or maintenance schedules.
The Large Dog Park - Members Only provides specialized services and amenities tailored for the Sun City West community, ensuring a focused and comfortable environment for canine recreation:
- Exclusive Off-Leash Play Area: The primary service is a spacious, fenced-in zone designated specifically for large dogs to run and play freely without leashes. This exclusive access for RCSC members helps maintain a more controlled and predictable environment.
- Separate Play Areas: While the name indicates a "Large Dog Park," the RH Johnson Rec Center facilities also include separate small dog park sections (Section A and Section B). This provides appropriate play environments for dogs of varying sizes, reducing potential stress for smaller animals and ensuring more comfortable interactions.
- Drinking Fountains for Dogs and Humans: A critical amenity, especially in Arizona, is the availability of "drinking fountain" facilities, ensuring that both dogs and their pet parents can stay hydrated during their time at the park.
- Shaded Areas for Comfort: The park provides "Sunny and shade for dogs and pet parents." This is an invaluable service in the Arizona climate, offering crucial relief from the sun and encouraging longer, more comfortable visits for both canines and their human companions.
- Pet Waste Stations: While not explicitly detailed in the provided snippet, members-only parks operated by community associations typically provide readily accessible pet waste bag dispensers and disposal bins to promote cleanliness and responsible pet ownership. (This is a standard expectation for well-maintained dog parks).
- Regular Maintenance Schedule: The park benefits from a dedicated maintenance schedule, with the Large Dog Park specifically closed on Mondays for regular upkeep. This commitment to maintenance, funded through membership, aims to keep the facility clean and in good condition, addressing concerns about cleanliness.
- Security and Oversight: As a facility managed by RCSC for its members, there is an inherent level of oversight and security, including rules for dog licensing and vaccinations, which contribute to a safer environment.
The Large Dog Park - Members Only in Sun City West boasts several key features and highlights that make it a valuable asset for local residents:
- Exclusive Membership Access: This is a defining feature. Being a "Members Only" park means it's reserved for residents of Sun City West who are RCSC Cardholders. This exclusivity helps cultivate a sense of community, encourages adherence to rules, and often results in a more responsible and consistent user base, contributing to a generally safer environment for play.
- Spacious Area for Romping: The "Plenty of room to romp" comment from a review highlights that the park offers ample space for large dogs to run, fetch, and burn off energy, which is crucial for their physical health and well-being.
- Dedicated Shade Elements: The provision of "Sunny and shade for dogs and pet parents" is a significant highlight, especially in the Arizona climate. Strategically placed shade structures or natural shade allow both dogs and their owners to escape the intense sun, making visits more comfortable and safer, particularly during warmer months.
- Hydration Stations: The presence of a "Drinking fountain" is a vital amenity, ensuring that dogs can stay hydrated during their active playtime, reducing the risk of overheating.
- Separate Small Dog Areas Available (within RCSC facilities): While this specific park is for large dogs, the broader R.H. Johnson Rec Center campus offers designated small dog park sections. This ensures that Sun City West residents with smaller or more timid dogs also have a suitable and safe off-leash environment.
- Part of a Comprehensive Recreation Network: The dog park is integrated into the extensive Recreation Centers of Sun City West network. This means members have access to a wide array of other recreational facilities, creating a holistic lifestyle offering for residents.
- Commitment to Maintenance: The scheduled weekly closure for maintenance underscores a commitment by RCSC to keep the park clean and well-maintained for its members. While challenges can arise (as noted in reviews), the dedicated effort to upkeep is a continuous benefit.
As a "Members Only" facility, the Large Dog Park in Sun City West doesn't offer traditional public promotions like discounts for entry. Instead, its primary "offer" is its inclusion as a valuable amenity for residents who are members of the Recreation Centers of Sun City West (RCSC). The cost of access is inherent in the RCSC membership fees.
The "special offer" here is the exclusive access and the benefits that come with it for eligible residents:
- Included with RCSC Membership: The dog park is an amenity available to RCSC Cardholders in good standing. The annual RCSC membership fee grants access to a wide array of recreational facilities across Sun City West, including multiple dog parks, pools, fitness centers, golf courses, and various clubrooms. This comprehensive package represents significant value for residents.
- Access to Multiple Dog Park Options: While this listing is for the Large Dog Park, RCSC offers access to separate large and small dog parks at the RH Johnson Rec Center, as well as Duffeeland Dog Park in Sun City (a related community also managed by RCSC). This variety provides options for members with different dog sizes or location preferences.
- Enhanced Safety and Security: The controlled access ensures that users are part of the Sun City West community, often implying adherence to RCSC rules, including dog licensing and vaccination requirements (Maricopa County regulations). This contributes to a generally safer and more predictable environment for dog socialization.
- Managed and Maintained Facility: The membership fees directly contribute to the consistent maintenance and upkeep of the dog park, ensuring a higher standard of cleanliness and repair than often found in public, free-access parks. The scheduled maintenance closures are part of this commitment.
- Community Events for Members: While specific dog park promotions are rare, RCSC and various chartered clubs for pet owners (like the "Best Friends Dog Club" in Sun City, which might have reciprocal arrangements or similar clubs in Sun City West) often organize member-exclusive events, training classes, or social gatherings for dog lovers. These add value beyond just park access.
For Sun City West residents, the "promotion" is the value derived from their RCSC membership, which unlocks access to this dedicated dog park and a host of other recreational opportunities. New residents or those interested in membership should contact RCSC Member Services for details on fees, qualifications, and the application process.
