Welcome to HJP Regional Park

For dedicated dog owners in Pennsylvania, especially those in and around Stroudsburg, finding a truly secure, well-maintained, and enjoyable space for their canine companions to run free is paramount. HJP Regional Park, a significant local natural resource, offers a dedicated dog park that, while operating on a members-only basis, provides an exceptional environment for off-leash play and socialization. This structured approach ensures a high standard of safety and upkeep, making it a valued amenity for its users.

While some visitors might initially be surprised by the membership requirement, it's this very system that allows HJP Regional Park's dog area to maintain its quality and provide a controlled, safe space. Beyond the dog park itself, the larger HJP Regional Park offers a beautiful landscape of trails, inviting exploration for both two-legged and four-legged adventurers, albeit with specific rules for leashed areas.

Location and Accessibility

HJP Regional Park is conveniently located in Stroudsburg, PA 18360, USA. This placement makes it accessible for residents throughout Monroe County and the wider Poconos region, offering a natural escape close to home. The dog park specifically is a designated area within the broader regional park complex.

Accessibility to HJP Regional Park is generally good, with free parking available nearby the dog park entrance. While the review mentioning "No dog park there at all. The one place that was there was closed and said members only!!!" indicates that casual visitors might not immediately find an open, public off-leash area, it clarifies that a dedicated dog park does exist, but it operates under a membership model. This means that access is controlled, contributing to a more secure and potentially less crowded environment for registered users. Visitors should plan to obtain a key/membership beforehand to ensure entry to the off-leash dog park area. The park also features dog-friendly trails in the larger regional park, which can be explored with leashed dogs.

Services Offered

HJP Regional Park's dog park offers a comprehensive set of services and amenities, carefully managed through its membership system, to ensure a high-quality experience for all users. These provisions are designed with safety, cleanliness, and canine enjoyment in mind.

  • Exclusive Fenced Off-Leash Areas: The primary service is providing a fully fenced and secure environment where member dogs can run, play, and interact freely off-leash. This controlled access enhances safety and helps maintain the park's condition.

  • Separated Sections for Large and Small Dogs: To cater to the varied needs and play styles of different breeds and sizes, the dog park features separate, fenced areas for large dogs and small dogs. This important distinction helps prevent accidents and allows all pups to socialize comfortably within their peer group.

  • Agility Obstacles: The park is equipped with various obstacles, offering opportunities for dogs to engage in mental and physical challenges beyond simple running. This adds an extra element of fun and stimulation for energetic pups.

  • Shaded Areas: For the comfort of both dogs and their owners, the park provides shaded areas, offering respite from the sun, especially during warmer months. This thoughtful feature allows for longer, more enjoyable visits.

  • Double-Gated Entrance: A critical safety measure, the dog park utilizes a double-gated entrance system. This prevents accidental escapes when individuals are entering or exiting the enclosed areas, adding an extra layer of security.

  • Waste Disposal: While general amenities like water fountains and waste disposal bags are not explicitly listed in all public descriptions, it is a standard expectation and a rule for members to pick up after their dogs, with receptacles usually provided. The park's rules explicitly state, "You MUST pick up your dog's solid waste and place it in proper receptacle."

  • Self-Supplied Water: Members are required to "Bring your own source of water. No community bowls." This ensures hygiene and individual responsibility for dog hydration.

Features / Highlights

HJP Regional Park's dog park boasts several key features and highlights that make it a desirable destination for members seeking a premier off-leash experience in Stroudsburg, PA. These elements contribute to its controlled and enjoyable environment.

  • Membership-Based Access: This is arguably the most defining feature. While a previous review highlighted the "members only" aspect as a frustration, for dedicated users, it's a significant highlight. It ensures a controlled environment, where all dogs are registered, vaccinated, and licensed (Monroe County), leading to a safer and more predictable social setting. The annual key fee is $25, payable to Jackson Township.

  • Fully Fenced and Secure: The entire off-leash area is fully fenced, providing a secure boundary for dogs to play without risk of wandering off. This is coupled with a double-gated entrance for added safety.

  • Dedicated Large and Small Dog Areas: The separation of play zones based on dog size is a crucial safety and comfort feature, allowing dogs to interact with appropriate playmates.

  • Obstacles for Enrichment: The inclusion of various obstacles adds a layer of fun and mental stimulation, allowing dogs to engage in more than just running. This can be particularly appealing for active breeds.

  • Shaded Areas: Natural shaded spots within the park provide comfortable resting areas for both dogs and their owners, especially during warmer weather, making visits more pleasant.

  • Dog-Friendly Trails: Beyond the fenced dog park, HJP Regional Park offers "a lovely dog-friendly trail for walks and exploration" where dogs must be on a leash. This provides additional opportunities for exercise and enjoyment of the wider natural surroundings.

  • Well-Maintained Grassy Fields: Recent visitors have noted the park's "well-maintained grassy fields," suggesting a good standard of care for the play surfaces, contributing to a clean and pleasant environment.

Promotions or Special Offers

Given its members-only structure, "promotions" for HJP Regional Park's dog park primarily revolve around the benefits of membership and community engagement rather than commercial discounts.

  • Annual Membership for Access: The core "offer" is the annual membership, which grants exclusive access to the dog park. The fee is currently $25 annually, payable to Jackson Township, which provides a key for entry. This fee supports the park's maintenance and operation, making it a direct investment in a quality dog park.

  • Family-Friendly Membership: The annual key fee of $25 covers one family and allows for up to three dogs per family to be registered. There's a $5 fee for each additional dog beyond three. This makes it an affordable option for multi-dog households.

  • Community Connection and Engagement: Becoming a member connects you with a community of responsible dog owners in the Stroudsburg area. This often leads to informal meet-ups, shared experiences, and a collective effort to maintain the park's quality. While not a formal "promotion," the peaceful atmosphere and the reported tranquility due to potentially less usage could be a bonus for those seeking a quieter outing, which is a unique "offer" in itself.

  • Access to Trails and Regional Park Amenities: Membership to the dog park is part of the larger HJP Regional Park experience, which offers over 3 miles of trails for hiking, running, and biking, as well as fishing access. While the dog park is a specific feature, the broader park's offerings enhance the value of being a member.

To obtain an annual key, residents must provide a current copy of their dog license issued by Monroe County, current vaccination records (including DHLPP or equivalent, Rabies, Bordatella, and proof of treatment for various worms and flea/tick control), and pay the annual fee. Keys are renewed annually, typically around April 1st.

Conclusion: Why this place is suitable for locals

For dog owners in the Stroudsburg area of Pennsylvania, HJP Regional Park's dog park offers a particularly suitable and valuable resource, precisely because of its structured, members-only approach. While some might initially prefer a completely open public park, this system ensures that all dogs entering the off-leash area are licensed, vaccinated, and registered, fostering a significantly safer and more responsible play environment. This peace of mind is invaluable for pet parents concerned about their dog's well-being during social interactions.

The park's specific features, such as fully fenced areas with double gates, separate sections for large and small dogs, and the inclusion of agility obstacles, demonstrate a thoughtful design focused on canine enjoyment and safety. The presence of shaded areas and well-maintained grassy fields further enhances the overall experience for both dogs and their human companions.

Furthermore, the annual membership fee is a small investment that directly contributes to the upkeep and quality of this unique amenity, demonstrating a communal commitment to responsible pet ownership and well-maintained public spaces. Beyond the dog park, the extensive network of dog-friendly trails in the wider HJP Regional Park provides ample opportunities for leashed walks and further exploration of the beautiful Monroe County landscape. For those seeking a reliable, safe, and community-supported off-leash environment in the Stroudsburg area, HJP Regional Park's dog park stands out as an exceptional choice for locals and their beloved canine companions.

I really enjoy walking the trails. The trails need better signs so you can map a course. I tried, but end up in circles. Not that I mind, its a beautiful place.

Small easier trails

Great Dog Park for the Poconos. Huge with multiple trails. Small annual membership fee for members to use the enclosed area(s) but free trails for the public to use.

The trail system is nice but I agree with the other reviews that the sign system is a little funky. It鈥檚 cute that they tried to give the Spurs names but the trails themselves are not blazed well and it can get pretty confusing if you鈥檙e not familiar with the trail. There鈥檚 no freshwater stream on this trail for dogs to drink, keep in mind.
