Welcome to Fredericksburg Dog Park
For dog owners across Virginia, providing a dedicated space where their furry companions can safely run, play, and socialize off-leash is a significant priority. In the historic city of Fredericksburg, residents are fortunate to have such a resource in the Fredericksburg Dog Park. This facility, located within the charming city limits, serves as a vital recreational outlet for local canines and their human companions. This article will provide a clear, engaging, and informative overview of Fredericksburg Dog Park, detailing its features, access requirements, and why it remains a fundamental amenity for dog owners in the Fredericksburg region of Virginia.
Fredericksburg Dog Park is a designated off-leash area, designed specifically for dogs to enjoy freedom and exercise in a controlled environment. Situated at 1448 Kenmore Ave, it's a city-operated park that emphasizes responsible pet ownership and community well-being. While reviews indicate varied experiences regarding the social atmosphere among human visitors, the core purpose of the park – providing a secure space for dogs to run – is consistently met. The park is fully fenced, ensuring that dogs can safely explore and interact within its boundaries. Important amenities such as access to fresh water and waste disposal facilities are provided, reflecting a commitment to maintaining a clean and functional space. It's essential to note that this particular dog park has specific access requirements, being primarily intended for City of Fredericksburg residents. This local focus helps ensure the park remains a dedicated resource for those it primarily serves, though it may occasionally impact the social dynamics as noted by some out-of-town visitors. Despite this, for a local dog, it offers a consistent and accessible place to burn off energy.
Fredericksburg Dog Park is located at 1448 Kenmore Ave, Fredericksburg, VA 22401, USA. This address places it conveniently within the City of Fredericksburg, making it easily accessible for local residents. The park is situated near Mary Ball Street, and clear directions are often provided for easy navigation:
-
From Kenmore Avenue: Just past Mary Ball Street (past the tennis courts) on your right-hand side, you will see the parking lot and fenced-in dog park.
-
From Mary Ball Street: Turn right at the intersection with Kenmore. The parking area is the next right turn.
Accessibility is a notable feature, with the park offering "easy access" and "adequate parking" for visitors. This is a crucial convenience, allowing dog owners to quickly and safely transition their pets from their vehicle to the off-leash area. The park is also described as being ADA accessible, ensuring that it can be enjoyed by a wider range of community members.
It is important for potential users to be aware of a key accessibility requirement: the Fredericksburg Dog Park is available to City of Fredericksburg residents and their pets only. City residents who wish to use this facility are required to have their dog tags, which are available at City Hall (City Ordinance Code 14-213). While some reviews suggest this rule may not always be strictly enforced, it is the official policy. This resident-only policy aims to ensure the park serves its primary local community effectively, managing usage and maintaining the quality of the facility for its dedicated users.
Fredericksburg Dog Park offers a range of essential services and amenities designed to create a functional and comfortable environment for dogs and their owners:
-
Fully Fenced Off-Leash Area: The primary service is providing a secure, fully fenced enclosure where dogs can run, play, and socialize without the constraint of a leash. This allows for vital physical exercise and mental stimulation.
-
Water Fountain / Fresh Water Access: The park features a water fountain (or spigot) with bowls, ensuring dogs have access to fresh drinking water for hydration, especially important after vigorous activity or during warmer weather. Reviews confirm that "fresh water" is consistently available.
-
Waste Management Facilities: Conveniently placed trash cans and the provision of poop bags are available. This service promotes cleanliness and encourages responsible pet ownership, maintaining a hygienic and pleasant environment for all users.
-
Shaded Seating Areas: The park provides shaded seating areas, offering comfortable spots for owners to relax, observe their dogs, and socialize. This enhances the overall comfort and convenience of the park experience.
-
Double-Gated Entrance: A double-gated entrance system is in place, adding an important layer of safety to prevent accidental escapes as dogs enter or exit the main play area.
-
ADA Accessibility: The park is ADA accessible, designed to accommodate users with varying mobility needs, ensuring a wider range of community members can enjoy the facility.
-
Self-Monitored Environment: The park is described as "self-monitored by its users," indicating a community-driven approach to maintaining rules and cleanliness, where responsible pet owners contribute to the park's upkeep.
Fredericksburg Dog Park offers several key features and highlights that contribute to its utility and appeal for local dog owners:
-
Secure Fully Fenced Area: The most important highlight is the secure, six-foot high fenced enclosure that allows dogs to roam freely and safely off-leash. This provides crucial peace of mind for owners.
-
Dedicated Water Source: The availability of a water fountain for dogs, often noted as having "always fresh water," is a highly appreciated feature, ensuring pets stay hydrated during their playtime. The presence of a hose also allows for quick clean-ups or rinsing of toys.
-
Effective Waste Management: The park provides poop bags and conveniently placed trash cans, making it easy for owners to clean up after their pets. This contributes to the park's overall cleanliness, as noted by positive reviews.
-
Shaded Areas for Comfort: The presence of shade, possibly from trees or a covered shelter, offers comfortable resting spots for owners, particularly valuable during warmer parts of the day.
-
Ample Room for Running: Despite being described as "small" by some, the park offers "space that to run around," allowing for adequate exercise and play, and enabling dogs to leave "happily tired."
-
Clear Visibility: The park's layout often allows for "clear visibility of the entire fenced in area," enabling owners to easily supervise their dogs' interactions and activities.
-
ADA Accessibility: The park's ADA accessibility is a significant highlight, ensuring that individuals with disabilities can also enjoy this community amenity with their pets.
-
Historical Significance (Indirect): Being located in Fredericksburg, a city rich in Civil War history, adds an indirect layer of significance to the park's setting, blending recreation with the area's heritage.
As a public dog park managed by the City of Fredericksburg and supported by the Fredericksburg Dog Park Association (FDPA), Fredericksburg Dog Park typically does not offer commercial promotions or special discount offers in the traditional sense. Its primary "promotion" is its role as a free-to-access public amenity for eligible local residents.
However, there are "offers" or opportunities that contribute to the park's value and rely on community engagement:
-
Free Access for Residents: The park's availability without a direct fee to City of Fredericksburg residents (with valid dog tags) is its most significant ongoing "special offer." This provides an invaluable resource for pet owners to ensure their dogs receive necessary exercise and socialization.
-
Community-Driven Improvements (Phase 2): The Fredericksburg Dog Park Association (FDPA), a non-profit organization, is actively involved in fundraising for "Phase 2" of the park's development. This includes potential future additions like more shade, water features, agility courses, and ADA paths. While not an immediate "promotion," contributing to or learning about these efforts (via the FDPA's website or city announcements) allows residents to help shape and expand the park's future offerings, which would directly benefit them and their pets.
-
Provided Waste Bags: The consistent provision of poop bags is a thoughtful and practical "offer" that enhances convenience and promotes cleanliness without additional cost to the users.
Any specific events, such as community clean-up days, fundraising drives, or educational programs, would be announced through the City of Fredericksburg's official channels (Parks & Recreation department website) or the Fredericksburg Dog Park Association's communications. Locals interested in maximizing their use of the park or contributing to its improvements should monitor these sources for updates.

Nice dog park but zero dogs other than mine at 7 am on a Sunday morning so my dog was not able to have any meet and greets
Apr 27, 2025 · Heather ChangNice dog park but people not friendly at all. We travel full time and have been to dog parks all over the country. We've always been spoken to by the people there. Even in large groups we've been welcomed. But not one person out of about 15 spoke to either me or my husband. Left and found another very welcoming dog park. May not seem like a big deal to most. But I'm a very friendly person and always say hello if nothing else.
Dec 04, 2024 · Marie RollerA pretty nice dog park right in the middle of lots of parks and walking paths. There is a cover for shade on both sides, and water bowls for the dogs. It can get pretty muddy if it rains a lot, so they sometimes close it to preserve the grass. There are bathrooms across the street at Kenmore park
Jul 07, 2020 · Andrew KolarNeeds to have both sides open with a clear indicator of weight for each side. Most dog parks have separate sides according to size, not sure why this one doesn't. It makes things unnecessarily dangerous. The dog park has toys which is nice. Large space, not much shade and a lot of poop so watch your step. Agility equipment is a joke, just broken down and rotting away. One ramp was on the side that was open and it looked like a washboard nailed to some wood. The pavilion is on gravel so while you can cool off, your dog has to find somewhere else to lie down. Low tier dog park, I've definitely been to better ones but there are not many in the area. Needs more sanitary cleaning and regulations. The rules state dogs must be registered with the city but nothing is enforced there and I witnessed a few unruly dogs with no owners stepping forward to manage them. Come at your own risk.
Apr 16, 2024 · Daisy ColoradoThe park offers ample space for dogs to run and play freely. The amenities, such as water stations and waste disposal bins, are well-maintained, contributing to a clean environment. However, I would advise pet owners to be cautious as there have been instances of territorial behavior among some dogs. While most interactions are friendly, it's important to watch over your pet and be mindful of their interactions with other dogs. Keeping a close eye on your furry friend can help prevent any potential conflicts and ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone. Despite this concern, I still highly recommend.
