I love this dog park! This is a very large park with plenty of space for your fur baby to roam. Tom Sawyer dog park has a separate area for dogs under 30 lbs as well as a larger side for all size dogs. There are multiple pet waste disposal areas throughout the park and water stations as well. On the "all dog" side of the park there is a large area that gets flooded and essentially turns into a pond after a good rain, most dogs seem to love to play in it! The park has a place to clean up your dog after possibly getting muddy if this happens... just bring a towel! Another great thing about this park is that there is ample seating for all the humans. There are chairs, multiple gazebos, and benches all throughout. Many of these are located in nice, shady areas. The gravel trail on the larger side is also mostly shaded and provides a nice scenic walk for you and your pet... I have even seen deer while on the trail... on the other side of the fence! Check this place out if you are a member, and remember to pick up after your pet!

Introduction / Overview

The E.P. Tom Sawyer Park Dog Park is a very large and highly popular off-leash dog park situated within the expansive E.P. Tom Sawyer State Park in Louisville, Kentucky. It is widely recognized for its vast open spaces and thoughtful amenities designed to cater to the diverse needs of the canine community. Operated under the oversight of the Louisville Dog Run Association (LDRA), the park requires membership for entry, a system that contributes significantly to its high standards of cleanliness, safety, and overall maintenance. This dog park is not just a place for dogs to run; it's a vibrant hub where dogs can enjoy freedom, engage in playful interactions, and where humans can connect with fellow dog enthusiasts. Its reputation as one of the best dog parks in the city is well-earned, offering an exceptional outdoor experience.

Location and Accessibility

The E.P. Tom Sawyer Park Dog Park is conveniently located at 3000 Freys Hill Rd, Louisville, KY 40241, USA, within the larger E.P. Tom Sawyer State Park. This strategic location in eastern Louisville makes it easily accessible for residents from various parts of the city and surrounding communities. As part of a state park, accessibility is generally excellent, with clear signage and ample, convenient parking typically available near the dog park entrance. The ease of access is a major advantage, allowing dog owners to quickly get their pets to a spacious and secure environment where they can safely enjoy off-leash play. Being integrated into a larger state park also means visitors can enjoy other park amenities (outside the dog park area with their leashed dogs) before or after their dog park visit, such as walking trails and scenic views.

Services Offered

  • Exclusive Off-Leash Play: The primary service is providing a very large, fully fenced, and secure environment where member dogs can play off-leash, promoting essential physical activity, social development, and mental stimulation.
  • Separate Play Areas: The park thoughtfully provides two distinct, fenced sections: a dedicated area for small dogs (under 30 lbs) and a much larger side for "all size dogs." This separation ensures comfortable and safe interactions tailored to different canine sizes and play styles.
  • Multiple Pet Waste Disposal Areas: To maintain a clean and hygienic environment, numerous pet waste disposal stations are strategically located throughout the park, complete with bags, encouraging responsible clean-up after pets.
  • Water Stations: Throughout the park, water stations are available, ensuring dogs have access to fresh drinking water after vigorous play sessions.
  • Dog Washing Station: A highly valued amenity, the park includes a designated area to clean up dogs, particularly useful if they get muddy after playing in the "pond" area. Owners are advised to bring their own towels.
  • Member Access (LDRA Permit Required): As a members-only park, access is managed through the Louisville Dog Run Association (LDRA) membership, which often involves a permit and contributes to the park's upkeep and controlled entry.

Features / Highlights

  • Very Large Park with Ample Space: Reviewers consistently highlight the immense size of this dog park, with "plenty of space for your fur baby to roam." This expansive area (approximately 6 acres) allows for vigorous running, chasing, and playing without feeling cramped.
  • Unique "Pond" After Rain: A standout feature, particularly loved by many dogs, is a large area on the "all dog" side that "gets flooded and essentially turns into a pond after a good rain." This natural water feature provides a unique and exciting opportunity for dogs to splash and play, turning rainy days into a special treat.
  • Ample Shaded Seating for Humans: The park offers "ample seating for all the humans," including "chairs, multiple gazebos, and benches all throughout," with many located in "nice, shady areas." This allows owners to comfortably relax and observe their dogs, even on sunny days.
  • Scenic Gravel Trail: The "gravel trail on the larger side is also mostly shaded and provides a nice scenic walk for you and your pet." This adds another dimension to the park experience, allowing owners to get some exercise while their dogs explore off-leash. Promotions or Special Offers

The E.P. Tom Sawyer Park Dog Park operates on a membership basis through the Louisville Dog Run Association (LDRA). Therefore, its "promotions" are primarily tied to its annual membership fees, which directly fund the park's maintenance and superior amenities.

  • Annual Membership Fee: The current annual permit for the Louisville Dog Run Association (which includes access to Tom Sawyer Dog Park and other LDRA-managed parks) is typically $45 for the first dog. Discounted fees are usually available for additional dogs in the same household (e.g., $30 for the second dog, $20 for the third).
  • Temporary Permits: Some information suggests that day passes ($10), 5-day passes ($30), or 10-day passes ($60) might be available, as well as monthly options ($40/month, $120 for three months), offering flexibility for those not ready for a full annual commitment or visiting from out of town. It is advisable to confirm these options with the LDRA.
  • Membership Benefits: The "special offer" here is the exclusive access to a top-tier, well-maintained dog park with unique features like the seasonal pond and dog washing station, all supported by the membership fees. These fees ensure a premium, secure, and clean environment for all users.

To obtain a permit, dog owners typically need to provide proof of current rabies vaccination and a local dog license. Membership applications and renewals can often be processed online via the Louisville Dog Run Association website or at participating local pet supply stores like Feeders Supply.

One of the best. Also PSA BRING YOUR EMPTY Grocery bags and put them in the shed people! I've gone to this dog park for over a year now. At all times of the day and week. My dog frickin loves this place, especially the ponds. It's kept super clean and everyone is usually very very friendly. The dogs, I've never had an issue with nor have I seen anything escalate into a serious issue. Its close by to Starbucks so I usually grab a coffee on the weekend and a pup cup on my way back home. Definitely going to miss Tom Sawyer Dog Park and the pups.

This is one of the best dog parks I have ever been to! We are traveling and ended up staying in Louisville. This park was less than a mile from our hotel so we decided to take our dog over to tire him out before the trip! Great walking path, lots of trees, plenty of water for the dogs, the other dogs were friendly, and so were the people! Great place, highly recommend!

Looks like a great park but there is no indication online or any signage as you enter the park that you need a key fob to enjoy it. We are visiting Louisville and needed someplace to let our dogs be dogs only to have to leave🙁

A great place to bring your pooches and let them have a blast with other dogs! Even though being a members only dog park, the dog owners that I’ve met are friendly and easy to talk to. The dog park itself is bigger than it looks, so there’s plenty of running room for your furry friend. Though on or after rainy days, in the “All Dog” section of the park tends to be very muddy: so be ready to bathe your dog after a trip! The small dog section of the park is grassier and, of course, smaller for the smaller dogs. I would definitely recommend this park to those who are looking for a place to bring their dogs to burn some energy.
