Welcome to Cycle Dog - Earth Friendly Pet Company Tavern And Dog Park

Hey there, Portland pet parents! Are you on the lookout for a truly unique and engaging spot where you can enjoy a refreshing beverage and a bite to eat, all while your beloved canine companion plays safely, rain or shine? Then you absolutely need to check out Cycle Dog - Earth Friendly Pet Company Tavern And Dog Park! Located at 2056 NW Pettygrove St, Portland, OR 97209, this innovative establishment seamlessly blends a vibrant social space for humans with an exciting play area for dogs, all while championing eco-friendly practices.

Portland is known for its love of dogs and its commitment to sustainability, and Cycle Dog perfectly embodies both. This isn't just a dog park; it's a comprehensive experience designed to cater to both ends of the leash. Imagine sipping on a local craft beer or cider, knowing that your dog is having the time of their life in a secure, dedicated play area – whether indoors on a typical Oregon rainy day, or outside soaking up the sun. The concept of an indoor dog park is particularly revolutionary for Portland, providing a much-needed haven when the weather isn't cooperating for outdoor adventures.

What sets Cycle Dog apart is its dual identity as a working factory and showroom for its fantastic line of upcycled pet products. This means that while your dog is playing, you can browse a range of collars, leashes, beds, and toys, all handmade in Portland from recycled materials, primarily inner tubes. It's a testament to local entrepreneurship and a sustainable approach to pet accessories. The energy is palpable, with the hum of sewing machines from the factory floor adding to the unique ambiance during the week. Cycle Dog has truly created a community hub where convenience, fun, and eco-consciousness converge, making it a must-visit destination for dog lovers across Portland.

Location and Accessibility

Cycle Dog - Earth Friendly Pet Company Tavern And Dog Park is strategically located at 2056 NW Pettygrove St, Portland, OR 97209, USA. This address places it in the vibrant Northwest Industrial District, often referred to as the Central Eastside Industrial Area, or more recently, the "Slabtown" area of Portland. This area is known for its mix of industrial businesses, creative offices, breweries, and now, innovative pet-friendly venues.

The location offers good accessibility from various parts of Portland. It's relatively close to major thoroughfares, allowing for straightforward driving access. Parking in the industrial area can be a mix of street parking and potentially dedicated lots, depending on demand. For those who prefer alternative transportation, the area is also accessible via public transit, though specific routes and walk times from stops should be checked with TriMet. Its position in Northwest Portland makes it a convenient hub for residents in that quadrant, as well as those coming from downtown or other parts of the city.

Being situated in an industrial zone provides unique benefits, such as ample space for both indoor and outdoor dog play areas, which might be harder to secure in more densely packed commercial or residential neighborhoods. This allows Cycle Dog to offer expansive facilities for dogs to roam and play. The area is continually evolving, with new businesses and residences, making Cycle Dog a pioneering establishment that contributes to the neighborhood's dynamic character. Its location ensures it's a destination easily reachable for many Portland dog owners looking for a comprehensive pet and human social experience.

Services Offered

Cycle Dog - Earth Friendly Pet Company Tavern And Dog Park offers a comprehensive suite of services that cater to both the enjoyment of dogs and their human companions. This multi-faceted establishment goes beyond a typical dog park.

  • Indoor Off-Leash Dog Park: A key service, especially in rainy Portland, is the "1000 sq ft Indoor Dog Park." This provides a climate-controlled, mud-free environment for dogs to play and socialize year-round, regardless of weather conditions. It's available for "Open Play All Day Every Day" from 10:00 am to close (starting at 12:00 pm on Sundays).

  • Outdoor Off-Leash Dog Park: In addition to the indoor space, there's an "800 sq ft Outdoor Dog Play Area," allowing pups to enjoy fresh air and sunshine when the weather is good. This offers a different environment for play and exploration.

  • Tavern with Beverages: For human visitors, the "Dog-Friendly Taproom" offers a wide selection of "Beer, wine, cider + non-alcoholics." This allows owners to relax and socialize while supervising their dogs.

  • On-Site Food Cart (Tino's Tacos): A significant convenience is the presence of "Tino's Tacos Cart is on site and serving a full menu. Open Daily 10-8." This provides breakfast, lunch, and dinner options, enhancing the overall experience for patrons.

  • Factory Showroom and Retail Store: Cycle Dog operates a "full factory showroom of product" where all their eco-friendly pet products are handmade. This includes "collars, water bowls, dog beds, waterproof jackets, toys and treats," offering a unique shopping experience for durable, sustainable pet gear.

  • Required Intro Session for Off-Leash Play: For new dogs, a "free 30-minute intro session" is required to ensure the dog is comfortable with the space and ready for off-leash play. This helps maintain a safe and well-socialized environment.

  • Membership and Day Passes: Off-leash play requires either a "one-time pass for the off-leash play areas" ($8 per dog for all-day play) or a membership. "Multi-play session/monthly unlimited play session passes" are available, offering cost-effective options for regulars.

  • Vaccination and Spay/Neuter Requirements: To ensure the health and safety of all dogs, "Written proof of Rabies, Bordetella, and DHPP vaccinations is required." Additionally, "Dogs over 9 months must be spayed or neutered to participate in off-leash play."

  • Tiny Dog Times: Specialized "Tiny Dog Tuesday 4-5pm (20lbs or less – indoor park only)," "Tiny Dog Thursday 4-5pm (20lbs or less -indoor park only)," and "Sunday Tiny Dog Brunch from 10:30-12:00 (20lbs or less – indoor park only)" are offered, providing a safe space for smaller breeds.

  • Pool Parties (Seasonal): On Wednesdays and Saturdays, they host "pool parties that are just for dogs," complete with "pool friendly toys," providing a fun way for dogs to cool down and play in the water.

  • Custom Product Orders: Since it's a working factory, customers can inquire about "custom size or custom product" orders for their pet gear.

Features / Highlights

Cycle Dog - Earth Friendly Pet Company Tavern And Dog Park boasts a range of unique features and highlights that make it a standout destination for Portland dog owners.

  • Unique Indoor and Outdoor Dog Parks: This is a primary highlight. The availability of both "indoor and outdoor dog park areas" is revolutionary for Portland, offering a guaranteed play space regardless of the notorious Oregon weather. The indoor park provides a mud-free, climate-controlled environment, while the outdoor area offers fresh air and sunshine.

  • Integrated Tavern Experience: The ability to "chill, drink your beer, hang out with your dogs" while they play is a major draw. The "Dog-Friendly Taproom" offers a selection of "beer, cider, wine, N.A. options," allowing owners to relax and socialize comfortably.

  • On-Site Taco Food Cart (Tino's Tacos): The presence of a dedicated "taco food cart out front" providing breakfast, lunch, and dinner options means visitors can enjoy a full meal without leaving the premises, making for a convenient and extended outing.

  • Eco-Friendly Products & Factory Showroom: Cycle Dog is a "local female owned business" that creates "earth friendly pet products" handmade from "upcycled inner tube rubber." The "full factory showroom of product" allows visitors to see where collars, beds, toys, and other gear are made, offering a unique retail experience that aligns with Portland's sustainable values.

  • Dedicated Small Dog Play Times: The specific "Tiny Dog Tuesday/Thursday 4-5pm & Sunday 10:30am-12:00pm" (indoor park only) ensures that smaller or more timid dogs have dedicated, safer play opportunities away from larger, more boisterous breeds, promoting inclusive play for all sizes.

  • Safety and Policy Enforcement: The requirement for a "free 30-minute intro session" and strict adherence to "vaccinations and spaying/neutering" policies demonstrate a commitment to dog safety and responsible play, creating a more controlled and predictable environment for all users.

  • Community Focus: While one review notes an unfortunate individual experience with policy enforcement, the overall business model fosters a strong sense of community, aiming for a space where "all well-socialized dogs and people welcome." Testimonials often praise the "friendly staff" and the "great community of people."

  • Pool Parties: The "pool parties that are just for dogs" on Wednesdays and Saturdays are a fantastic and fun way for dogs to enjoy water play, especially during warmer months, adding a unique recreational option.

Update after owner commentary. There are several bits of misinformation in the owner note and information about “reminder of policy” was only presented AFTER payment was made, in a snarky matter of fact way. A note about 4 times is an absolute fabrication. There was a note said about “dog under control” after I went to the bathroom with my pup and she slipped out the door before I left the room completely. It was handled respectfully and nothing happened. Tell the truth. I’m an adult, not a child. Regardless of the commentary, it changes nothing. I will just choose to not use your facility, which is my choice to do. As mentioned, good luck with the business. No issues with the business model or approach. Just an issue with an employee that could use some training and seems the owner (or the very employee that said something with permission) is trying to argue something against a customer on a public forum. Good thing these reviews cannot be easily removed. I’m also not surprised by the owner response and the employee behavior…it’s on par with several reviews I read after writing this one. This could have been handled with a simple “I’m sorry you had a bad experience, please make sure to touch base with our staff on your next visit to make sure we are on the same page about policies. It’s for everyone’s benefit and we want to make sure the visit meets the necessary standards for you and your pup. Thank you for your patronage and we hope you revisit in the future. If you need more information, contact us here: ————“. Simple, easy, respectable. Due to the approach taken, you’ve lost a customer for life and no recommendations to others, no matter the quality of the products you make and sell. Unfortunate. Original note. Overall experience is fine for the most part but recently had a bad experience and unfortunately that is what drives in this day and age. Staff is passive aggressive about “policy enforcement” and did not seem to treat all customers to the same standard. Be consistent. Be honest. Be genuine. Good luck with the business.! I will not come back.

My dog absolutely loves this place, as do I. Karleigh and Maddy along with everyone else that we have interacted with here, are all kind and helpful and they all understand how each dog is different which is so helpful. We visit several times a week and each time the whole space is clean and inviting. We’ve even ordered a custom fit harness for my dog and the whole process was so easy and they finished it quickly, the quality of everything here from the harness’s and leashes to dog toys and treats are are top tier. We love this local dog hang out!

Update from a year ago. We had the evaluation for our dog and then we found out he needed a hip replacement so we’re finally back! He had his first real play time last week and he loved it. The other pet parents are super into being with their dogs and we all made sure our pups were doing well and having a good time. The staff was great too. We had a really good time overall and can’t wait to go back.
