The ground cover is a type of bark (no splinters) so ignore reviews that mention it. Great park for dogs with large area but not so large you lose your dog. I like the hills and the mounds that the dogs jump around. Lots of seating both at the top of the hill and at the bottom. I will definitely be back.

Welcome to Central Park Dog Park
For dog owners in Huntington Beach, California, and the broader Orange County area, Central Park Dog Park offers a refreshing and distinctive off-leash experience. Unlike many conventional dog parks, this beloved local spot is celebrated for its unique ground cover and varied terrain, providing a more natural and engaging environment for canine companions. Situated within the expansive and beautiful Huntington Central Park, this dog park allows pups to run freely, navigate playful mounds, and socialize with fellow canines, all within a secure and well-maintained setting.
Visitors consistently praise Central Park Dog Park for its spaciousness, noting that it's "large area but not so large you lose your dog," striking an ideal balance for both exploration and supervision. The ground, covered in a "type of bark (no splinters)," provides a clean and comfortable surface for paws, often preferred over dirt or traditional grass that can become muddy. This thoughtful choice of ground cover contributes to the park's overall cleanliness and appeal, ensuring a pleasant experience for both dogs and their human companions.
What truly sets this dog park apart are its "quirky" hills and mounds. These natural features encourage dogs to jump, climb, and engage in more dynamic play, mimicking a "wandering in the woods" feel while still being within a safe, fenced enclosure. This unique arrangement makes Central Park Dog Park a standout destination in Orange County, offering a truly different and stimulating environment for active dogs. Combined with ample seating for owners and a reputation as a "well maintained facility," it’s clear why so many locals "will definitely be back" to this inviting canine haven.
Location and Accessibility
Central Park Dog Park is strategically located within the vast Huntington Central Park at Edwards St, Huntington Beach, CA 92647, USA. As part of Huntington Central Park, one of Orange County's largest city-owned parks spanning over 300 acres, the dog park benefits from being in a well-established and easily identifiable recreational area. To access the dog park, visitors are typically advised to "Enter at the Inlet Drive parking lot," which is conveniently located on the east side of Edwards Street.
The park offers generous operating hours, catering to a variety of schedules. On weekdays, the dog park is open from 9:00 AM to 7:00 PM. On weekends, hours are slightly adjusted, running from 10:00 AM to 7:00 PM. This allows for both morning and early evening visits, accommodating different routines for local dog owners. Ample parking is available, making accessibility by car straightforward and hassle-free, a significant advantage for those traveling with their pets. While the specific street address is Edwards St, it's essential for visitors to look for the Inlet Drive entrance for direct access to the dog park's vicinity.
The integration of the dog park within a larger central park means visitors can also enjoy other amenities before or after their dog's playtime, such as walking trails (with dogs on-leash outside the dog park area) or visiting nearby cafes. The area is well-maintained, contributing to a pleasant and accessible environment for all.
Services Offered
Central Park Dog Park provides essential services and amenities designed to ensure a safe, clean, and enjoyable experience for all its canine and human visitors:
- Separate Areas for Large and Small Dogs: The dog park is thoughtfully sectioned off into fully gated areas. There's a dedicated area for small dogs and puppies, and a larger area for bigger dogs. This separation is crucial for ensuring safe and appropriate play among dogs of varying sizes and temperaments.
- Dog Waste Bags: To encourage responsible pet ownership and maintain cleanliness, the park provides dog waste bags in dispensers throughout the facility. This makes it easy for owners to promptly clean up after their pets.
- Pet Drinking Fountain: Fresh water is readily available through a drinking fountain specifically designed for pets, helping dogs stay hydrated during their active play sessions, especially on warm California days.
- Secure Fencing: The entire dog park area is fully gated with secure fencing all around, providing a safe environment for off-leash play and preventing dogs from easily exiting the designated area.
- Ample Seating for Owners: Visitors will find "lots of seating both at the top of the hill and at the bottom," allowing owners to comfortably observe their dogs and relax during their visit.
Features / Highlights
Central Park Dog Park distinguishes itself with several unique and appealing features that contribute to its popularity:
- Unique Bark Ground Cover: A major highlight is the ground cover, which is a "type of bark (no splinters)." This provides a clean, comfortable, and often less muddy surface than grass or dirt, which is highly appreciated by dog owners and helps keep paws clean.
- Hilly and Mounded Terrain: Unlike flat dog parks, this park features "hills and mounds that the dogs jump around." This varied topography encourages more dynamic play, natural exploration, and provides a more stimulating environment for dogs. It gives a sense of "wandering in the woods."
- Spacious Design: The park is described as having a "large area," providing plenty of room for dogs to run, sprint, and play without feeling confined, yet it's designed in a way that owners don't "lose your dog."
- Well-Maintained Facility: The park consistently receives praise for being a "well maintained facility," indicating regular upkeep and cleanliness, which enhances the overall visitor experience.
- Integration within Huntington Central Park: Being part of a larger, beautiful park provides additional benefits, such as access to walking trails (outside the off-leash area) and the serene ambiance of the surrounding green space.
- Friendly Community Atmosphere: Dog parks naturally foster a sense of community. This park is noted for attracting a friendly group of dog owners, creating a welcoming social environment for both pets and their humans.
Promotions or Special Offers
As a public dog park managed by the City of Huntington Beach's Department of Community Services, Central Park Dog Park does not offer commercial promotions or discounts in the traditional sense. Its primary benefit is providing a free, publicly accessible off-leash area for the community's dogs. However, its integration within Huntington Central Park and the active local pet community often lead to indirect benefits or events:
- Community Events: Huntington Central Park frequently hosts various community events, festivals, and activities throughout the year. While not directly tied to the dog park, these events can make a visit to the broader park more engaging.
- Local Pet-Friendly Businesses: Huntington Beach is a very pet-friendly city, and local pet supply stores, groomers, or veterinary clinics might occasionally partner with community groups to host informal gatherings, pet-related workshops, or small adoption events that could be advertised or held near the park. For instance, the nearby Park Bench Cafe within Central Park is famously dog-friendly and offers a special dog menu.
- "Best Friend Dog Park Foundation": This non-profit organization works to support and maintain Central Park Dog Park (also sometimes referred to as Best Friend Dog Park). While not offering promotions, they rely on donations and may hold fundraisers or awareness events that benefit the park's upkeep and amenities.
For information on any upcoming community events or initiatives related to Central Park Dog Park, locals are encouraged to check the City of Huntington Beach official website for Parks and Recreation, or look for announcements from local pet-focused community groups.

Dec 22, 2024 · Paul ChaklosWhat a quirky little dog park! It’s not your usual, but I do like the arrangement. Makes me feel like I’m wandering in the woods with my dog but at the same time my dog can go play with others. There is ample parking and this is a well maintained facility. I’ll be coming back here!
Jun 04, 2025 · Uma GokhaleOverall, it's a nice place to take your doggie for a nice day out. It's a large area for the dogs, plus if you have a leash, you can walk around the parks. Many, many wonderfully created trails. The parking lot is ample and also features a lake, playground, and nearby eateries. It's always a joy to come. Plus, there is also a pet washer bath next to the dog park. On a scale, a strong 4.0. Would appreciate a bit more cleanliness and offer more seating 💺, but the park makes a great and positive impact.
Apr 08, 2024 · Javier RoseteNOPE. Just don't. I was told about this dog park from a neighbor and decided to go. But the entire place is filled with WOODCHIPS. My dog had a hard time running on them when I took him to the big dog zone (which was friendlier for him) and eventually just gave up and sat around. You try to run on sticks barefoot and see how you like it. Also dogs are dogs, and plenty of them were just sitting around, and eating the woodchips. That and the Small Dog Zone had very aggressive dogs. I let my dog in there intially, and he was instantly attacked by 3 chihuahuas & a scotty and ended up with a cut on his lip. The Pet Parents here did nothing to help, even when they heard my dog squeal. They just responded with "that's just how these dogs are over here." So I just don't recommend it. There's plenty of better, more beautiful & fun dog parks out there, with better people too. This place is honestly just a vet emergency waiting to happen. Don't go. Save yourself a trip to the vet.
Sep 17, 2024 · Lee (Lee2015)One of the nicer looking dog parks I’d have to say! This area is a beautiful nature spot for dogs and their owners to relax and play in a natural setting. I stopped off here to meet friends with their dogs before heading off to a nearby picnic at the Huntington Central Park West Dual-gate entrances for large and small dogs allow for the safe transition from leash to loose. I was impressed by the set-up as I enjoyed watching the dogs interact together. It’s within a large tree covered area of Huntington Central Park with parking, restrooms and seating for the owners. A wash hut may provide a nice alternative to washing at home when open.
