Welcome to Cedar River Dog Park
For dog owners in Renton, Washington, finding a dedicated and spacious environment where their furry friends can run, play, and socialize off-leash is a valuable asset. Cedar River Dog Park, nestled alongside the picturesque Cedar River Trail, offers just such a place. This community-focused dog park provides a significant space for canines to stretch their legs, interact with fellow pups, and enjoy the freedom that comes with a designated off-leash area. It's a popular destination for locals seeking an active and engaging outing for their beloved pets.
Created by citizen volunteers and donors in 2009 and now managed by the City of Renton Parks and Trails Division, Cedar River Dog Park is a testament to community effort and dedication to pet-friendly spaces. Its design aims to cater to a variety of canine needs, from the most energetic runners to the more timid observers. While some aspects of its surface have been noted by users, its overall commitment to providing a safe and open environment makes it a go-to spot for many Renton dog owners. This park truly embodies the spirit of a place where "all varieties of dogs have fun being off-leash and free."
Cedar River Dog Park is conveniently located at 1500 Houser Way S, Renton, WA 98057, USA. This address places it directly alongside the scenic Cedar River Trail, making it an integrated part of Renton's extensive trail system. Its proximity to the river and trail offers a pleasant natural backdrop for visits.
Access to the park has recently seen some changes. Starting February 26, 2024, and lasting for one year, access to the dog park is from Cedar River Park using the pedestrian bridge to cross the Cedar River. This temporary rerouting is due to WSDOT storing materials under the I-405 bridge for a freeway-widening project. Visitors should follow all posted signage and directions. While some reviews note that the "parking situation is also not ideal," there are parking options available within the broader Cedar River Park area. The park's integration with the Cedar River Trail also means it can be easily accessed by walkers and cyclists. Its location ensures it's a practical option for many Renton residents seeking a dedicated off-leash space.
Fenced Off-Leash Area: The park provides a fully fenced off-leash area spanning approximately 3.75 acres, offering ample space for dogs to run and play freely.
Separate Small/Shy Dog Area: A dedicated, fenced enclosure is available for small or shy dogs, ensuring a comfortable and safe play environment for those who prefer calmer interactions.
Two Double-Gated Entrances: The park features two double-gated entrances, enhancing safety and security by preventing accidental escapes as dogs enter and exit the play area.
Agility Course: An agility course is included within the dog park, providing stimulating equipment for dogs to climb, jump, and weave, adding an element of fun and challenge to their visit.
Water Spigot: Potable water is available via a spigot in the main off-leash area from April through October. During the months of November through March, dog owners should bring their own drinking water for their dogs.
Dog Waste Stations: While not always explicitly detailed in every review, the City of Renton's dog park rules emphasize picking up after dogs, and public parks typically provide waste stations with bags and receptacles.
Shade Structures and Benches: The park includes two shade structures and several benches, offering comfortable spots for owners to relax and supervise their dogs.
Picnic Tables: Three picnic tables are available, providing additional seating options for visitors.
Spacious and Open Feel: The park is described as "open and calm," offering a large area for dogs to stretch their legs and providing good visibility of the entire play space. At approximately 3.75 acres, it's one of Renton's larger dedicated off-leash areas.
Dedicated Small/Shy Dog Area: The separate enclosure for smaller or more timid dogs is a significant highlight, demonstrating a thoughtful approach to accommodating all canine personalities and promoting safer interactions.
Agility Course: The presence of an agility course adds a fun and engaging element for dogs, providing opportunities for physical and mental stimulation beyond just free running.
Proximity to Cedar River Trail: Being located alongside the Cedar River Trail allows for extended outings, enabling owners to combine off-leash play with leashed walks or bike rides on the scenic trail, with glimpses of the river. Note: Dogs must be on leash outside the off-leash area.
Community-Driven Creation: The park's origins as a volunteer and donor-supported initiative highlight a strong community commitment to providing a dedicated space for dogs.
All-Season Usability: While some reviews mention the presence of rocks, the open nature and amenities make it usable year-round, with water available seasonally.
One aspect to be mindful of, as noted in a review, is the "so many rocks, everywhere!" This can be a concern for dogs that like to run at full speed, and owners should exercise caution, particularly if they or their dogs have sensitive ankles.
As a public park facility managed by the City of Renton Parks and Trails Division, Cedar River Dog Park does not typically offer commercial promotions or special discounts. Access to the off-leash area is generally free of charge for all users, in line with the city's commitment to providing accessible public recreational spaces.
Any community-based events, such as park clean-up days, dog-related workshops, or awareness campaigns for responsible pet ownership, would be announced through the official channels of the City of Renton Parks and Recreation Department. Organizations like R.U.F.F. (Renton's Unleashed Furry Friends) might also be involved in supporting the park and could announce relevant activities. Interested dog owners are encouraged to regularly check the City of Renton's official website, particularly their Parks and Trails section, for the most current information regarding any scheduled activities, park updates, or maintenance notices related to Cedar River Dog Park. These are not commercial "promotions" but rather opportunities for community engagement and park information.

For dog owners in Renton, Washington, Cedar River Dog Park offers a highly suitable and cherished destination for their furry companions. Its appeal to locals stems from several key features that cater to the diverse needs of the canine community. Firstly, the park's generous size of approximately 3.75 acres provides ample open space, allowing dogs to run, play, and engage in high-energy activities, which is essential for their physical and mental well-being. This open feel also allows owners to maintain good visibility of their pets.
Secondly, the thoughtful inclusion of a separate, fenced area for small or shy dogs is a significant advantage, ensuring a safe and comfortable environment for all. This helps prevent overwhelming interactions for more timid pups and promotes positive socialization. The presence of an agility course adds an extra layer of fun and mental stimulation, appealing to dogs who enjoy more structured play. While the abundance of rocks on the ground is a point for owners to be mindful of, the park's other amenities, such as a water spigot (seasonal), shade structures, benches, and picnic tables, contribute to a comfortable experience. Furthermore, its location alongside the Cedar River Trail offers the added benefit of combining off-leash play with scenic leashed walks along the river, making it a versatile destination for a complete outdoor adventure. Cedar River Dog Park is a testament to Renton's commitment to providing excellent pet facilities, making it a valued and highly suitable resource for the local dog-loving community.

May 06, 2025 ยท J&YNice fenced space, but SO many rocks, everywhere! My dogs like to run, so this is not the place for us. I watched another person roll there ankle just walking, too. The parking situation is also not ideal.
Apr 22, 2025 ยท Latosha H.I think my puppy got parvo here. She's okay now, just don't be dumb like I was and bring dogs who aren't fully vaccinated. It's a fine park. Lots of room for dogs to run. I do prefer other dog parks in the area though.
Apr 28, 2025 ยท Lacey GrahamThe closest dog park to me and wow lucky me! Seems like a bit of an underrated, underutilized gem in South King County. I'm gonna keep telling (off) the losers who let their dogs run off leash in lakeridge alllllllllll about this amazing off leash dog area! ๐
Dec 02, 2024 ยท Keira TerchowitzPretty basic dog park. Has a smaller "quarantine" area which can be handy for a smaller dog, or for my medium -sized dog when he misbehaves. Water available for the dogs, and good quality poop bags. Only criticism I have is, you can't see the parking lot from the park, and the area is a bit dodgy. There always seem to be rough types hanging out nearby. DON'T leave ANYTHING of value in your car.
