Had I known how great this park is I would have gone so many years ago. The fenced in areas (one for small dogs and one for medium to large) are great for quick trips, rambunctious and not well minded pups. Then you have the unfenced well maintained trails that are beautiful, and allow for great trail walking with or without a four-legged friend. The pups love the out-of-bounds trails with one of them constantly exploring the brush. As for poop, like anywhere there is some to deal with. Overall though, I give this place a 4.8 out of 5 for people being respectful and responsible. They have bags there for use, but I still bring my own.

Accessibility to Barkwood Dog Park is generally well-regarded. Visitors appreciate the ease of reaching the park and the convenient layout. While specific details on parking are not provided in the reviews, the nature of a well-maintained park of this caliber typically implies ample and accessible parking facilities. It's important for visitors to note that like many well-managed dog parks, a permit is likely required for entry and use. Information regarding obtaining this permit would typically be available through the local park district (likely the Rockton Township Park District or a similar managing authority). The controlled access, usually through a permit or membership system, helps ensure that all dogs using the park are vaccinated and in good health, contributing to a safer environment for everyone.

Barkwood Dog Park offers a comprehensive range of services and amenities designed to cater to diverse canine needs, promoting safe play, exercise, and exploration in both structured and natural environments.
-
Fenced Off-Leash Areas: The park features clearly defined, securely fenced areas. These include:

These distinct zones are ideal for quick trips, as well as for rambunctious or less-socialized pups, providing a controlled environment for off-leash play and interaction.
-
Unfenced, Well-Maintained Trails: A significant highlight of Barkwood is its extensive system of unfenced but well-maintained trails. These beautiful paths allow for "great trail walking with or without a four-legged friend," providing an opportunity for dogs to explore natural brush and varied terrain off-leash in a more open setting.
-
Waste Management: The park provides bags for use at designated stations, encouraging responsible pet owners to clean up after their dogs. This commitment to cleanliness is reflected in visitor reviews, which often commend the high level of cleanliness and respectful user behavior.

Quiet and Relaxed Environment: The park's location ensures a generally quiet area, conducive to a peaceful outing for both dogs and their owners, away from the constant noise of urban environments.

Barkwood Dog Park operates as a managed facility, and as such, typically requires a permit or membership for access. While the park itself may not run traditional "promotions" in the retail sense, its permit system is a standard practice for maintaining quality and safety in well-regarded dog parks.
Information regarding specific permit fees and how to obtain them would be managed by the local park district, likely the Rockton Township Park District or a similar governing body. Typically, these permits are available as:
-
Annual Memberships: Providing unlimited access for a calendar year, often with varying rates for residents and non-residents, and sometimes discounted rates for additional dogs from the same household.
-
Daily Passes: A convenient option for those visiting infrequently or for the first time to try out the park.
To ensure a safe and healthy environment for all users, most regulated dog parks, including Barkwood, require proof of current dog vaccinations (e.g., Rabies, Distemper, Parvo, Bordetella) and a valid dog license from the owner's municipality as part of the permit application process. All users are expected to adhere to the park's posted rules and regulations, including prompt waste cleanup and maintaining control of their dogs. The existence of these regulations and the permit system ensures that the park remains well-maintained and provides a positive experience for its members. Jul 22, 2020 · Beth WhitakerVery nicely groomed paths. Quiet area and the dogs love the freedom to run.
May 03, 2025 · Jill GatenaNice large area that is well maintained maintenance wise by the village and treasured by its users and their owners. Great place to help your dog burn so energy off. I know my Bennie loves it and jumps at the words "puppy park". There is a Facebook page as well if more information is needed
Dec 29, 2022 · Melissa J Kerno (DvusGrl)We have a 6 month old Golden Retriever and found this park a month ago. While I have a large fenced yard at home, Barkwood gives our pup the opportunity to socialize with other dogs and run off leash in a prairie environment. This used to be a 9 hole golf course, which gives an idea of the size of the site. Nice, mowed walking trails throughout the property and most pet owners seem responsible about picking up after their pets (there is plastic bag dispensers located in the fenced area). It is well maintained by the Village of Rockton, porta-john on site and worth every penny of the annual fee charged.
Dec 02, 2020 · Patrick MorrowDog loves it. Two areas for off leash, small and large breeds. Bunch of other trails... bring your own water in the winter.
