WE LOVE DR NIU!! We have been taking our furbabies to Dr Niu for over 10 years now and she’s absolutely the most amazing vet! This was our first time at this location because it was an emergency for our 5 year old Malinois, Poppy. This location is nice that there is street parking in front but also a parking lot in the back. It seemed like Poppy had injured herself doing Maligator things but we couldn’t pin point the exact issue. She would randomly yelp in pain and it was concerning because she had a very high pain tolerance. Fearing internal injuries or possible organ damage we scheduled immediately to have her examined. After a brief exam Dr Niu laid out the plan and executed it in the next hour. Xrays and physical exam showed Poppy had a minor slipped disk in her spine that was pinching a nerve. We were relieved to hear that Poppy was overall healthy and just needed to chill out for a few weeks. Not the easiest thing for her to relax, but it’s for her own good! The vet tech that brought us Poppy’s medication also did a fantastic job at explaining what and when to give her. Thanks again to Dr Niu and her staff! PS - har gow make the best pill pockets for her girly Poppy 😊

Located at 2216 W Main St, Alhambra, CA 91801, USA, this facility operates within the "Pet Hospital" category, aiming to provide various services for the health and well-being of local pets. You can contact them by phone at (626) 282-2179 or via mobile at +1 626-282-2179.
West Main Animal Hospital is situated on W Main Street, a relatively accessible location in Alhambra. According to a customer review, the hospital offers convenient parking options, including "street parking in front but also a parking lot in the back," which is a significant advantage in an urban setting. While specific details about the interior environment are not extensively described, the review suggests it is a "nice" location. Typically, a "Pet Hospital" environment would include a clean and organized reception area, multiple examination rooms, a surgical suite, diagnostic areas (e.g., for X-rays), and areas for hospitalization and recovery. The goal of such an environment is generally to provide a comfortable and efficient setting for both pets and their owners during visits.
As a "Pet Hospital," West Main Animal Hospital would traditionally offer a broad range of veterinary services. While the reviews highlight specific instances of care, the general offerings of such a facility would include:
- Preventive Care: This would encompass routine wellness examinations, vaccinations for various canine and feline diseases, and parasite prevention and control.
- Diagnostic Services: The hospital is equipped for diagnostics, as evidenced by the performance of X-rays for an emergency case. This implies the availability of in-house laboratory services for blood tests, urinalysis, and fecal exams, crucial for accurate diagnosis.
- Medical Treatment: They provide medical interventions for various conditions, as demonstrated by the diagnosis and treatment plan for a slipped disk in a dog. This indicates capabilities for managing acute and chronic illnesses.
- Emergency Care: The review specifically mentions an "emergency" visit for a dog, suggesting that the hospital is prepared to handle urgent cases, at least during operating hours. This is an important service for pet owners facing sudden health concerns with their animals.
- Surgical Services: While not explicitly mentioned in the reviews, a comprehensive "Pet Hospital" typically offers a range of surgical procedures, from routine spaying and neutering to more complex soft tissue surgeries.
- Client Education and Communication: The review highlights that a vet tech "did a fantastic job at explaining what and when to give" medication, indicating a focus on clear communication regarding home care.
One of the most prominent features of West Main Animal Hospital, based on customer reviews, is the highly regarded care provided by Dr. Niu. Multiple long-term clients express immense satisfaction with Dr. Niu's expertise and compassionate approach, stating, "WE LOVE DR NIU!!" and describing her as "absolutely the most amazing vet!" Clients commend her for exceeding expectations in pet care. A specific example details Dr. Niu's accurate diagnosis of a minor slipped disk in a dog after a thorough exam and X-rays, providing relief to anxious owners who feared more severe internal injuries. This demonstrates her clinical acumen and ability to effectively manage complex cases. The staff, including vet techs, are also praised for their professionalism and clear explanations regarding medication. The presence of convenient parking, both street and a rear lot, is another practical feature that enhances the client experience.
However, customer feedback also presents a significant concern regarding communication and billing practices, particularly concerning pet travel documentation. One customer reported a confusing and ultimately dissatisfying experience when seeking a specific document for travel to Mexico. Despite making their request clear, the staff initially seemed unaware of the specific requirements, performed a "whole required exam" for billing purposes, and only after completing the service informed the client that the document provided would be useless upon return from Mexico. The refusal to waive charges for a service deemed "useless" by the hospital itself, after initially misinforming or being uninformed about the requirements, was seen as "poor business practices and shady." This incident highlights a potential lack of up-to-date knowledge on specific regulations and a rigid billing policy even when services provided prove to be unhelpful due to internal miscommunication or lack of information. This aspect suggests that while the medical care provided by Dr. Niu is highly rated, clients should be meticulous in clarifying service specifics, especially for non-routine requests, and confirm billing implications upfront.
While specific promotional offers are not detailed in the provided information, the strongest "promotion" for West Main Animal Hospital comes from the glowing testimonials about Dr. Niu's medical expertise and compassionate care. The long-term relationships with clients, spanning over a decade, speak volumes about the consistent quality and trust built. For new clients, the hospital's reputation for accurate diagnosis and effective treatment, as demonstrated in the emergency case, would be a major draw. However, potential clients should also be aware of the mixed feedback, particularly concerning administrative clarity and billing. It would be advisable for individuals seeking specialized documentation or services with specific requirements to communicate these needs very clearly and confirm the exact procedures, expected outcomes, and associated costs beforehand to avoid potential misunderstandings. For routine and emergency medical care, the positive experiences with Dr. Niu and her staff suggest a strong clinical team. The availability of parking is a practical benefit for all visitors. The hospital's focus on thorough physical exams and diagnostics ensures a comprehensive approach to pet health, which is a key selling point for pet owners seeking detailed and effective care.

May 15, 2025 · Ben HuangBrought in my dog for a specific request to have a review for screw work before travel to Mexico. I made it clear as to why I needed the appointment and for no other reason. I stated I needed the document so that I could travel as it’s required now by US entry. No one seemed to know what I was talking about. I had to show them and explain it. But they seemed to pump out standard health certificates to make a bunch of money for travel, unaware of any recent laws or changes and additions. Okay no problem we get it sorted. They provide a whole required exam for my dog. Fine. Then after they’ve done all the work to charge me, then a vet comes in and says “hey none of this matters because you’ll need another document again when you return from a vet in Mexico” I said “so we did all this for nothing?” They said “yes basically”. I said “well are you still charging me then?” …. Guess what they did. I asked if they could wave the hundreds of dollars and they said they couldn’t. Interesting how they didn’t even know what I was asking for til they could bill for the service and then suddenly after they completed a useless service tell me it’s useless and still bill me. Poor business practices and shady.
May 10, 2025 · Alex GeeI decided to give my furry friend a summer haircut, and this pet groomer delivered beyond my expectations. The quality of the haircut was flawless, and my dog looks so adorable. The value for the money spent is excellent. I appreciate the groomer's attention to detail and their genuine love for animals. I'll be a loyal customer from now on!
Jan 04, 2025 · Guy HarrisonI just brought home a 16 week old puppy and brought him here to try and get him his rabies shot and his final round of vaccines as he is at that age. I just read the other reviews of new ownership and trust their reviews - I believe the new vet/owner here only has monetary interests at heart. 1. The vet (Dr. Writt) said that he is too young to get his rabies vaccine. Yet everyone else, including Banfield, and even on West Main's own official vaccination record that they have sent me said that he is overdue on his rabies. I believe she told me he is "too young" so that I can bring him in an EXTRA time for another charge. 2. She proceeded to list a multitude of vaccines that he should get to protect him from "wildlife" disease, yet following her logic, isn't he "too young" to even receive his rabies? Why does he need all these extra vaccines other than rabies when he's not even allowed outside? 3. She asked if he was dewormed, which he was. She then said that she doesn't think that he was dewormed properly and that he should get a stool sample test, and more deworming medicine just in case- all of extra charge of course. Keep in mind, I didn't bring up any concerns with her about his eating, his stool is completely healthy, and he hasn't been exposed to any other animals. She is just speculating for more of that $$. 4. I said I gave him a bath and his ear was a bit stinky and I would like for her to take a look inside. She did, said that it looked normal, but going to put on the invoice a "culture" test and medication - for more charge.... 5. As the cherry on top, the receptionist initially told me that newcomers get a free exam. The vet then proceeded to try and charge me for the exam fee as well. What should've been a $60-$80 bill, she tried to get close to $700 in useless tests, fees, and vaccines. There are other clinics in the area that operate with more integrity, honesty, and transparency. Even Banfield was more informative with me on the phone than my entire visit here. The staff was very friendly though - I just do not trust the doctor here.
