Welcome to Watertown Animal Hospital
For pet owners in Watertown, Massachusetts, and the surrounding areas, **Watertown Animal Hospital** serves as a local option for veterinary care within the **Pet Hospital** category. Located at **404 Main St, Watertown, MA 02472, USA**, this facility offers a range of services aimed at maintaining the health and well-being of companion animals. You can reach them by phone at **(617) 926-8888** or **+1 617-926-8888**.
The classification as a "Pet Hospital" signifies that Watertown Animal Hospital is equipped to provide a wide spectrum of veterinary services, encompassing preventive care, diagnostics, medical treatments, and surgical procedures. This indicates a commitment to comprehensive animal healthcare, addressing various needs throughout a pet's life.
The atmosphere at Watertown Animal Hospital is described by clients with a mix of high praise and specific concerns. Many clients find the staff, including **Dr. Cusick**, to be "friendly" and "great." This suggests a generally welcoming and personable environment for routine visits. The positive experience with Dr. Cusick providing "thorough advice and surgery for our cat when he had a dental issue" and offering "kindly supported us when we needed to clarify for insurance" speaks to a supportive and informative interaction, which is crucial for pet owners.
However, one review highlights a significant challenge regarding the handling of "difficult to deal with" animals. The experience of being told "not to come back" because a cat was deemed "too mean," despite the owner's extensive history with other vets noting the cat isn't "that bad," indicates a potential inconsistency in staff's approach or training for handling highly anxious or aggressive pets. The reviewer's concern about the "male vet" (implied to be Dr. Cusick based on context) being "pretty old" and "not very trained or up to date in ways to safely or effectively handle difficult animals" points to a critical area where the hospital's approach may not suit all pet temperaments. This suggests that while routine and calm visits may proceed smoothly, the environment might become strained for pets with behavioral challenges, potentially creating a stressful experience for both the animal and the owner. This specific feedback is important for potential clients with similarly challenging pets to consider.
As a full-service "Pet Hospital," Watertown Animal Hospital provides a comprehensive array of veterinary services for small animals, primarily focusing on canine and feline patients. Based on the provided reviews and general information, their services likely include:
- **Preventive & Wellness Visits:** This is a core service, as evidenced by clients bringing their cats for "regular wellness visits." This includes routine physical examinations, comprehensive vaccination programs (for common canine and feline diseases), parasite control, and general health assessments.
- **Dental Care:** Dr. Cusick has a strong interest in Veterinary Dentistry and is a Fellow of the Academy of Veterinary Dentistry, indicating a high level of expertise in this area. Services would include dental examinations, professional dental cleanings, extractions, and potentially more complex oral surgeries. The positive review regarding "surgery for our cat when he had a dental issue" directly supports their proficiency in this field.
- **Medical Diagnosis and Treatment:** Addressing a wide range of illnesses and conditions, from common ailments to more complex internal medicine cases. This includes prescribing necessary medications and developing treatment plans.
- **Surgical Services:** As a full-service hospital, they would offer various surgical procedures, including spaying and neutering, as well as soft tissue surgeries.
- **Diagnostic Capabilities:** To aid in accurate diagnoses, they would have in-house laboratory services for blood work, urinalysis, and fecal analysis. Digital radiography (X-rays) would also be available for internal imaging.
- **Client Education and Support:** The mention of "thorough advice" and support for "insurance clarification" indicates a commitment to educating pet owners and assisting with administrative aspects of pet care.
- **Limited Exotic Pet Care:** While primarily focused on dogs and cats, the hospital, or specifically Dr. Cusick, may on occasion see birds and pocket pets.
One of the most notable features of Watertown Animal Hospital is the **expertise and dedication of Dr. Thomas J. Cusick**. Dr. Cusick established the hospital in 1978 and has a distinguished career, including serving as Past President of the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) and Past President of the Academy of Veterinary Dentistry. His strong interest in veterinary dentistry, being a Fellow of the Academy of Veterinary Dentistry, makes him a highly qualified professional for dental issues. The hospital's consistent AAHA accreditation since its evaluation shortly after opening in 1978 (passing 900 standards and recertifying every three years) underscores a commitment to high standards of veterinary excellence and quality of care.
The **friendly and supportive staff** are a clear strength for many clients, contributing to positive routine visit experiences. Their willingness to provide thorough advice and assistance with insurance matters enhances client satisfaction.
The hospital's long-standing presence in the community (established in 1978) suggests a history of trust and consistent service, making them a familiar and reliable choice for many pet owners in Watertown.
However, a significant point of consideration is the **approach to handling difficult or aggressive animals**. The negative review highlights a potential limitation in their methods or patience for such cases. For owners with highly anxious, fearful, or reactive pets, this aspect warrants careful consideration. While some veterinarians are specifically trained in fear-free methods or behavior modification for these situations, the experience described suggests this might not be a strong suit of all practitioners at this hospital. This could mean that clients with "difficult to handle" pets may need to seek alternative care or discuss handling protocols thoroughly before their visit.
Watertown Animal Hospital's promotional efforts likely focus on its long history, its AAHA accreditation, and the expertise of its leading veterinarian, Dr. Cusick, particularly in the field of dentistry. Key promotional messages would include:
- **Experienced and Highly Qualified Veterinarians:** Highlighting Dr. Cusick's extensive experience and leadership roles in national veterinary associations, as well as his specialization in dentistry.
- **AAHA Accreditation:** Emphasizing their adherence to rigorous standards of quality care and facility excellence.
- **Comprehensive Wellness and Dental Care:** Promoting their proactive approach to health and specialized dental services.
- **Supportive Client Services:** Highlighting thorough advice, assistance with insurance, and general friendly staff interactions.
The hospital's website offers an online portal (through AllyDVM) for clients to access their pet's records, request appointments, and refill prescriptions, providing modern convenience. They also make available various pet products from leading brands like Hill's Prescription Diets, Royal Canin, and Purina Pro Plan Vet Direct, underscoring their commitment to providing comprehensive pet care resources.
Prospective clients, especially those with specific needs or concerns regarding their pet's temperament, are encouraged to contact Watertown Animal Hospital directly via phone to discuss their services, policies, and whether their approach aligns with their pet's needs. While many find it a reliable and caring practice for routine wellness and dental issues, understanding the nuances of their approach to animal handling can help ensure a positive experience for all.

Mar 09, 2024 · Max FaramarziSaid my cat was too mean and told us not to come back lol. It's true she is usually difficult to deal with, but I have not had problems like that at ANY other vet - this is over 10 years, no matter where we've lived, including other states. Most actually say she really isn't that bad which surprises even me. The male vet was pretty old so I'm guessing not very trained or up to date in ways to safely or effectively handle difficult animals. If you have a more difficult to handle pet, I would not recommend bringing them here.
Jun 04, 2023 · B BDr. Cusick and the other staff are very knowledgeable and helpful. I agree with other reviews that it is stressful to not be able to be there with your pet when they are being examined, but I am happy that they take the health and safety of their patients seriously. WAH is always friendly when you call with questions and Dr. Cusick is always quick to address any concerns.
Mar 17, 2023 · Kim PetersI had a great experience here obtaining an International Health Certificate (IHC) for my dog. The process was very straightforward and I found their pricing to be highly reasonable.
Mar 15, 2024 · Jordan SchwartzWe're brand new to the area and thus was recommended to us. They took great care of our dogs, extremely informative on what was going on with each one. We look forward to making this vet our dog's new place for check ups.
