On New Year’s Day I woke up to find my cat lethargic and semi unresponsive. I called VRCC and I was able to bring him in right away. I was nervous because I had not used this emergency vet before and I have had a bad experience with the other ER vet in Richmond. Thankfully VRCC is totally different than the other ERs. My cat has been in the ICU now for two days and is doing much better thanks to their care. Dr. van Beek is an incredible vet. She is so hardworking and is very dedicated to her patients. You can tell she truly cares. Any time I’ve called to get an update she will hop on the phone and talk to me. They’ve allowed me to come and visit my cat morning or night- they will set aside a room and give me as much time as I would like. The technicians I’ve spoken with are kind and super informative. Mindy the ER coordinator was so personable and thorough going over estimates and treatment plans. She answered any questions or concerns I had. I truly could not ask for a better place for my cat to be. Finding veterinary hospitals like here is really rare. I know that my cat is in good hands with them.

As a distinguished member of the "Pet Hospital" category, VRCC appears to offer a wide array of essential and specialized veterinary services, with a strong emphasis on emergency care, critical care, and surgical interventions. Based on the heartfelt testimonials from real customers, VRCC distinguishes itself through its prompt response, dedicated medical professionals, transparent communication, and a supportive environment for both pets and their owners.
Operating as a Pet Hospital, Veterinary Referral & Critical Care likely provides a full spectrum of veterinary services aimed at maintaining and improving the health of companion animals. These typically include routine wellness examinations, vaccinations, diagnostic procedures (such as laboratory testing and imaging), general medical care, and importantly, specialized services indicated by their name: veterinary referral, critical care, and surgery. The customer reviews particularly highlight their capabilities in handling emergencies, providing intensive care in their ICU, and performing complex surgical procedures.
One of the most striking features of VRCC, as evidenced by the reviews, is their immediate accessibility, especially during critical situations. One pet owner recounted calling on New Year’s Day when their cat was lethargic and semi-responsive and being able to bring him in "right away." This immediate availability for urgent cases is a hallmark of a reliable emergency veterinary service within a pet hospital setting. The reviewer's relief at finding VRCC to be "totally different than the other ERs" in Richmond underscores the positive first impression and the level of care received from the outset.
The quality of care within their Intensive Care Unit (ICU) is also highly praised. The same reviewer whose cat was admitted to the ICU for two days reported significant improvement, attributing it directly to the care received. Dr. van Beek was specifically commended for being "an incredible vet" who is "so hardworking and is very dedicated to her patients," with a genuine sense of care. This dedication extends to communication with pet owners, as Dr. van Beek would personally get on the phone to provide updates. Furthermore, VRCC demonstrates a commitment to the human-animal bond by allowing owners to visit their pets in the ICU, providing a private room and as much time as needed. This level of empathy and accommodation is a significant feature that sets VRCC apart as a caring pet hospital.
The support staff at VRCC also receive high praise. The technicians are described as "kind and super informative," and Mindy, the ER coordinator, is noted for being "so personable and thorough" when discussing estimates and treatment plans, as well as for patiently answering questions and addressing concerns. This highlights a team-oriented approach where both the medical and administrative staff contribute to a positive and reassuring experience for pet owners during stressful times. The reviewer's sentiment that they "truly could not ask for a better place" and that finding such veterinary hospitals is "really rare" speaks volumes about the exceptional service provided.
Surgical expertise is another key feature of VRCC. Dr. Clarke is lauded as an "amazing surgeon." A reviewer shared their experience of bringing their dog who couldn't use her back legs to VRCC, and the dog was taken into surgery the same day. Dr. Clarke's personal follow-up, calling twice daily with post-operative updates, demonstrates a high level of professionalism, care, and communication. The reviewer's complete trust in Dr. Clarke and his staff, stating they would trust them with any of their three dogs, further attests to the quality of surgical care available at this pet hospital.
While the reviews don't explicitly detail the physical environment of VRCC, the positive experiences shared suggest a well-equipped and efficiently run facility. The presence of an ICU and the ability to perform same-day surgeries indicate that VRCC has the necessary infrastructure and resources to handle critical and complex medical cases.

Jan 03, 2025 · BDr. Clarke is an amazing surgeon! Him & his staff are all very professional & friendly. Our dog couldn't use her back legs at all & she was taken into surgery the same day that we to her to VRCC. Dr. Clarke personally called us 2 times everyday with updates on her post op. I would trust them with any one of my 3 dogs any day. If we could give them more than 5 stars we would.
May 06, 2025 · Angie PowersIf you ever have an emergent need for any of your pets, PLEASE do yourself a favor for you and your pet and take them to this emergent vet. We had a nightmare with my dog being misdiagnosed from a different emergency vet. The next day, I knew something wasn't right and didn't trust what they had said. We brought our girl here, and they were able to do everything in their power that they could for her. They saved our girl, thanks to their knowledge, kindness, patience, and compassion. Our girl is back to walking, running, and almost back to normal. Even if the story wasn't a happy ending, this is still the place to go to and be. Because you will get any answers that they can find, and they will explain everything to the best of their ability. You will know coming to this facility that you and the team will do/have done anything and everything in their power for your dog 🫶 I wish I could give Dr. Abernethy all the love and hugs in the world because I don't think they will ever understand or know how appreciative and thankful we are. We felt so seen and heard, and it truly is their calling. Bless you, Dr. Abernethy. & seeing other reviews of individuals feeling the same, you deserve an award for your work, your efforts, and your compassion. 11/10 recommend.
Dec 07, 2024 · Casey MayMy little 4 month old blue heeler hurt her leg. We just knew she broke it. We drove an hour to get here at 10pm. We were seen immediately. Everyone was so friendly and so sweet to our little Kai. Thankfully she only dislocated her elbow and did not break it. Had to leave her overnight which broke my heart but the staff were wonderful with her. It was worth the drive and I highly recommend.
May 10, 2025 · Jodie MorganI cannot recommend Dr. Clark enough. He is understanding, empathetic and professional in guiding his patients (and their parents) through incredibly difficult situations. He provides context with plenty of detail and never makes you feel rushed when speaking with him. Not only was he thorough in the information he provided, but he also understands that the emotional state of those visiting require a calm demeanor when delivering it. If your pet needs a neurologist, I would highly recommend them to see Dr Clark.
