Ive brought my dog here for years. A few things people should know. Dr schepero is a skilled vet with absolutely no bedside manner. He will shame you for not having the money for every test or treatment, and offers no options, solutions or compromises. Make no mistake money is his only priority. Do not ever ask if an appointment is available the same day, they could have the entire day open and they will charge you an urgent visit fee of an additional 100 dollars. Even if your animal is dying and a long time patient. Finally took today to write a review because of how we were treated while my dog was dying. Cold, completely unfeeling, no kindness or compassion shown toward my family by this dr or his horrible staff. His staff is the same. 30 seconds after my dog died I was holding her body sobbing and they came in demanding payment. 30 seconds after that they demanded we leave, so my dogs body could be taken away. No I'm sorry for your loss, nothing. She was my soul for 14 years and I needed to say goodbye. I was rushed into signing a form to euthanize her despite being charged an additional 85 dollars for an urgent visit. I wasn't given time to think, or process anything, I was not allowed time to say goodbye to my dog. I only wanted a few minutes after 14 years. All they cared about was getting my credit card and getting us out asap. Not one person showed an ounce of compassion. I've spent thousands trying to help my dog and he never once mentioned a single test for her supposed condition, just lots of useless blood work and x-rays that would not have helped give us answers only an MRI, which had he mentioned years ago would have prevented so much pain and suffering. He mentions the condition and the mri only as she's dying and it's too late. In conclusion I will never bring another animal to this vet. I will tell anyone who will listen do not go to this vet. I am still stunned by how cold and unfeeling this doctor is towards animals and humans alike. He did not even thank me for using him for years and bankrupting my family to use his services. He didn't care if he ever saw us again.

Veterinary Associates of Derby, LLC Introduce

For pet owners in Derby, Connecticut, and the surrounding areas, Veterinary Associates of Derby, LLC is a veterinary care facility located at 380 New Haven Ave, Derby, CT 06418, USA. You can contact them by phone at (203) 734-2007 or via mobile at +1 203-734-2007. As a "Pet Hospital," this clinic operates within the category of providing medical services and health-related goods for animals.

The environment at Veterinary Associates of Derby, LLC, as described by customer reviews, presents a dichotomy. One long-standing client praises Dr. Jeff and his staff as "caring and supportive," suggesting a positive and comforting environment where questions and concerns are addressed. This perspective implies a welcoming atmosphere for routine visits and ongoing care, where pet owners feel their inquiries are met with understanding and assistance. This view of the clinic's environment suggests professionalism and a commitment to animal welfare.

However, another review offers a starkly different and highly critical perspective, particularly concerning emotional support and financial transparency. This client describes the environment during a pet's dying moments as "cold, completely unfeeling, no kindness or compassion." They detail being rushed into decisions, feeling pressured for payment immediately after their dog's death, and being denied time to grieve or say goodbye privately. The additional "urgent visit fee" even for a long-time, dying patient, regardless of availability, contributes to a perception of a money-driven environment. This review paints a picture of an insensitive and transactional atmosphere during highly vulnerable times, which would understandably be distressing for pet owners. The contrasting experiences suggest that the environment can vary significantly depending on the circumstances of the visit and the specific individuals encountered.

Veterinary Associates of Derby, LLC, as a "Pet Hospital," would typically provide a range of general veterinary services for companion animals. Based on the reviews, these services likely include:

  • General Examinations and Consultations: Pets are brought in for regular check-ups or when "not acting like he felt well," as mentioned in a different review for another clinic, implying the basic diagnostic process.
  • Diagnostic Testing: The critical review mentions "lots of useless blood work and x-rays," implying these are common diagnostic tools used by the clinic. The client also mentions an MRI as a potential, albeit late, diagnostic option for their dog's condition, suggesting the clinic might discuss or refer for advanced imaging.
  • Treatment Plans: The clinic would provide various treatments for diagnosed conditions, although one client expressed dissatisfaction with the lack of alternative solutions or compromises offered for expensive treatments.
  • Euthanasia Services: This is a service explicitly mentioned in one review, detailing the process of saying goodbye to a pet.

In a typical pet hospital setting, additional common services would include:

  • Preventive Care: Vaccinations, parasite control, and wellness programs.
  • Surgical Procedures: Routine surgeries like spay/neuter, and potentially more complex soft tissue or orthopedic surgeries.
  • Dental Care: Cleanings, extractions, and other oral health services.
  • Pharmacy Services: Dispensing necessary medications for treated conditions.

The highly divergent experiences reported by clients, especially concerning diagnostic thoroughness and the presentation of treatment options, suggest variability in the quality and approach to these services.

The features of Veterinary Associates of Derby, LLC, as described by clients, are highly varied. A positive feature, according to one long-term client, is the skill and effectiveness of Dr. Jeff, who is credited with keeping pets "happy and healthy for many years" without "unnecessary testing." This indicates a practice that can provide consistent, reliable care for routine needs and over extended periods. Another feature, highlighted by the critical review, is the perceived lack of "bedside manner" and compassion from Dr. Schepero and his staff. This suggests a more clinical, transactional approach to client interactions, especially during emotionally charged moments. The practice of charging an "urgent visit fee" even for established, dying patients who need same-day appointments is a distinct, and for one client, highly problematic, feature related to their billing policy. The concern over being rushed, pressured into decisions, and immediately confronted with payment demands after a pet's death, without "an ounce of compassion," paints a picture of a lack of sensitivity and client-centered care in critical situations. The discrepancy in perceived honesty and financial practices—one client stating no "up charge for unnecessary testing" while another felt "bankrupting my family" for useless tests—is a significant and concerning feature regarding financial transparency and diagnostic utility.

Regarding promotional information, similar to other businesses, positive client testimonials serve as a strong form of organic promotion. The review from a 30-year client who "highly recommend him" (Dr. Jeff) and praises the "caring and supportive" staff, along with the assurance that they "does not up charge for unnecessary testing," acts as a powerful endorsement. This suggests that for a segment of their client base, the clinic successfully promotes itself through consistent, trustworthy care and transparent billing. However, the deeply negative review, published publicly, acts as a significant counter-promotion. The detailed account of being "shamed," feeling "rushed," experiencing a lack of empathy during a pet's death, and concerns about billing and misdiagnosis, would likely deter potential new clients. The explicit instruction to "tell anyone who will listen do not go to this vet" is a direct and impactful negative promotion. When a clinic receives such strong and opposing feedback, particularly with highly emotional accounts, its public perception and future promotional efforts are significantly impacted. For any veterinary practice, maintaining a reputation for both medical competence and compassionate client care is paramount for effective long-term promotion, and the differing experiences reported suggest that Veterinary Associates of Derby, LLC faces challenges in consistently delivering on both fronts for all clients.

In conclusion, Veterinary Associates of Derby, LLC in Derby, CT, appears to be a veterinary practice with a polarized reputation among its clientele. While some long-term clients express satisfaction with their services, highlighting compassionate and financially responsible care, a contrasting and highly distressing review describes a lack of empathy, questionable billing practices, and perceived diagnostic failures, particularly during emotionally sensitive times. This suggests that while the clinic may offer standard veterinary services, the client experience, particularly concerning communication, compassion, and financial transparency, can vary drastically. Pet owners considering this clinic would be well-advised to engage in thorough discussions about expected costs and treatment plans, and perhaps consider a comprehensive view of various client experiences before making a decision.

Brought my old dog to be seen. Have not been to this vet but he came recommended by others that go there. I asked him to check his ears, clip his nails and take a blood test to see if he was diabetic. ( was peeing a lot lately) The front desk woman came and said she would come back with my bill. $448.00 later they billed me for visit, nails, ear medicine, blood draw, chemical blood , (heartworm and fecal test as well, without asking me). Guess I should have made it perfectly clear that I only wanted what I came for. The front desk person came in again after I was ready to leave with my receipt, handed me a poop tube, said she wouldn't give this to me to take unless it was already paid for, which she said it was in my bill. There will be no other charges. Received a charge on my credit card 2 days later for $45.00, for what I have no idea. (I didn't drop the poop sample off until 5 days later). Just be aware, you need to let them know what you want done and that no other surprise bills will be paid for.
