Welcome to Vetco Total Care Animal Hospital

Welcome to the introduction of Vetco Total Care Animal Hospital, a pet hospital located at 1851 Sunrise Hwy, Bay Shore, NY 11706, USA. As a dedicated pet hospital within the broader category of veterinary care, Vetco Total Care Animal Hospital aims to provide a range of services and potentially goods to cater to the health and well-being of your beloved animal companions. You can reach them at (631) 894-0210 or via mobile phone at +1 631-894-0210.

Understanding the environment and approach of a veterinary care provider is crucial for pet owners seeking the best possible care. While specific details about the hospital's ambiance, facilities, and equipment are not explicitly provided in the given information, we can infer some aspects from the customer reviews. One positive review highlights a friendly and knowledgeable staff, mentioning Dr. Bove and her veterinary assistant April. The reviewer also noted their cat's comfort level during the visit, suggesting a potentially welcoming and reassuring environment for pets. This positive feedback indicates a focus on creating a comfortable experience for both pets and their owners during routine check-ups and potentially other services.

However, it's important to consider all available feedback to gain a balanced perspective. Another customer shared a significantly negative experience concerning the care of their German Shepherd. This review raises concerns about the hospital's approach to medication, particularly regarding a known allergic reaction. The customer alleges that the doctor insisted on using a medication that had previously caused an allergic reaction and then pushed for another strong sedative without exploring alternative strategies or attempting to build rapport with the dog. This account suggests a potential "medication first, care second" approach in this specific instance, which may be a point of concern for pet owners who prioritize a more holistic and individualized approach to their pet's care.

The negative review further details a lack of effort to interact with the dog without sedation and a perceived lack of empathy from some staff members. The description of the dog being labeled as "alligator rolling" and uncooperative, while the owner felt they weren't even properly assessed without medication, paints a picture of potential communication issues and a possible reliance on sedation over patient handling techniques. The alleged eye-rolling incident further contributes to the reviewer's impression of a clinic that prioritizes efficiency over genuine care and connection with the animals.

Based on the limited information, it's challenging to provide a comprehensive overview of the specific services offered by Vetco Total Care Animal Hospital. However, drawing from the positive review, we can assume they offer routine check-ups and likely preventative care services. The mention of a yearly check-up indicates that they provide wellness examinations to monitor a pet's health and detect potential issues early. Given that they are a "Pet Hospital," it is reasonable to expect a broader range of services, which could include:

  • General medical care for illnesses and injuries
  • Vaccinations and parasite prevention
  • Dental care
  • Surgical procedures (the extent of which is unknown)
  • Diagnostic services (e.g., blood work, imaging)
  • Medication dispensing
  • Potentially, specialized services depending on the expertise of the veterinarians on staff

The negative review touches upon the use of medications like Gabapentin and Trazodone, suggesting that the hospital does prescribe sedatives and pain management drugs when deemed necessary. However, the concern raised is regarding the circumstances and apparent lack of consideration for alternatives in the specific case described.

Regarding the features of Vetco Total Care Animal Hospital, we can infer certain aspects from the reviews. The positive review highlights a knowledgeable and friendly staff, which is a significant feature for any service-oriented business, especially in veterinary care where trust and communication are paramount. The reviewer's comfort in making Vetco their new primary vet suggests a positive initial experience with the staff's professionalism and demeanor.

On the other hand, the negative review points to potential features that some pet owners might find unfavorable, such as a perceived over-reliance on medication without thorough behavioral assessment, a lack of patience or flexibility with certain animals (in this case, a large breed dog), and instances of unprofessional behavior from staff. These points suggest a potential lack of individualized care in certain situations and a possible disconnect between the clinic's operational efficiency and the emotional needs of some pets and their owners.

Currently, there is no specific promotional information available for Vetco Total Care Animal Hospital in the provided text. It is common for veterinary clinics to offer introductory discounts for new clients, seasonal promotions for specific services (like dental cleaning or vaccinations), or wellness plans that bundle preventative care services at a reduced cost. To learn about any current promotions, local users would need to contact the hospital directly via phone or visit their website if one exists.

In conclusion, Vetco Total Care Animal Hospital in Bay Shore, NY, is a pet hospital that has received both positive and negative feedback from customers. One reviewer praised the friendly and knowledgeable staff and the comfortable environment for their cat. However, another reviewer expressed significant concerns regarding the handling and medication approach for their dog, citing a lack of individualized care and empathy. Potential local users are encouraged to consider these differing experiences and perhaps conduct further research, such as looking for more reviews on other platforms or contacting the hospital directly to inquire about their services, environment, and approach to animal care. Visiting the facility in person for a preliminary assessment might also be beneficial to determine if it aligns with their expectations and their pet's specific needs. It is always advisable for pet owners to seek a veterinary care provider that they feel comfortable with and that demonstrates a clear commitment to the well-being and individual needs of their animals.

I had an extremely disappointing and concerning experience at this location involving the care of my German Shepherd, Gunther. Prior to the visit, I had clearly informed the staff that Gunther had experienced an allergic reaction to Gabapentin in the past. Despite this, the doctor insisted on using the same medication as a condition for even attempting to interact with him. When I asked who prescribed it, they refused to give a clear answer. To make things worse, they then pushed for Trazodone—another strong sedative—without considering any alternative strategies, behavioral assessments, or even attempting to meet or evaluate Gunther calmly. It was very clear their approach was medication first, care second—if at all. Gunther was reported as “alligator rolling” and uncooperative, but in reality, they never even came out to see him unless he was medicated. The report felt like a justification for their refusal to provide care. We returned the next day for a scheduled appointment, and the doctor refused to come out or say hello, showing zero interest in building rapport with my dog or earning his trust. To top it off, one of the female vets rolled her eyes at Gunther while we stood in line waiting. That moment made it painfully clear: this clinic is not here out of love for animals—they’re running a business that values efficiency over empathy, and convenience over connection. If a veterinary clinic is unwilling to show patience, flexibility, or even basic courtesy—especially to large breed dogs who may need a little more time—they shouldn’t be in the field. Gunther deserved better. All pets do.

I love taking my furbaby to this location. The staff are nice and welcoming. They are truly patient with all types of dogs. My baby is overly excited and always giving kisses. She was kissing everyone and the staff let her. I truly appreciate them and their care for all pets. The vet who took care of my baby was amazing! She was detailed and explained everything as she was examining. This location is great!

Alert: long post!! We started using Vetco Bayshore in 2022 when we brought our Chocolate Lab, Bailey in for some unexplained bleeding. After bloodwork, Dr. Caulfield was not comfortable with the results , so she retested her. Thanks to her expertise, it was found that our 10 year old pup had a terrible blood disorder and we had to rush her to the hospital. Dr. Caulfield saved her life that day. Fast forward almost 3 years, Bailey was almost 13 and the blood disorder was back. We tried a round of steroids but she only got worse. After a TERRIBLE night, we knew it was our sweet girl's time. We messaged the office that we will be there as soon as they opened (without an appointment). When we arrived, they had a room waiting for her and immediately took her in to be prepped for euthanasia. The ENTIRE staff gave us exceptional attention and were so sensitive to our heartbreak. Happily, it was Dr. Caulfield who was with us and Bailey at the end. We are devastated to be without our pup but SO THANKFUL for all who were in the office at 8:30 am on November 1, 2024.... When my husband went to pick up Bailey's collar the next day, they had flowers and a sympathy card waiting....I could not imagine and other office giving such personalized care...so thank you Bayshore Vetco and Dr. Caulfield.... Hopefully we will be back one day❤️

Dr. Claufield, Dr. Bove, Dr. Fielding, and Diana are simply incredible! From the moment you step into the vet clinic, there's a fantastic vibe that's hard to describe. The staff is truly wonderful. Dr. Claufield has an unmatched energy, and her inner beauty shines through, making her so charming. During the exam, it felt like I was part of the best pet hospital reality show ever! Huge thanks to everyone!
