I have been a customer here for years. I have brought both of my cats and my new puppy here and we have always had excellent experiences! The staff are very knowledgeable and kind, and have always listened to my concerns! Dr. Simmons is wonderful, he listened to my rambling and explained my puppy’s care in detail even when I asked him to repeat just to make sure I was on the same page. I will always trust them with my pets care!! Thank you for all that y’all do!

Welcome to Vetco Total Care Animal Hospital
Welcome to **Vetco Total Care Animal Hospital**, conveniently located at **8200 Renaissance Pkwy #1012, Durham, NC 27713, USA**. Operating as a Pet Hospital, Vetco Total Care aims to provide accessible and comprehensive veterinary services for cats and dogs within the Durham community. Situated inside Petco stores, this model is designed to offer a seamless experience for pet owners, integrating veterinary care with pet supply shopping.
The **environment** of Vetco Total Care Animal Hospital, being typically located within a Petco store, means it benefits from the established infrastructure of a retail space. This can offer a certain level of convenience and familiarity for pet owners who already frequent Petco for their pet supplies. While specific details about the interior aesthetics or waiting areas are not provided in the reviews, the retail setting generally implies a modern, functional space. The design often aims for efficiency to accommodate the flow of clients within a larger retail environment. However, it's worth noting that client experiences regarding the staff and overall organization within this environment can vary, as some reviews suggest.
Regarding **services**, Vetco Total Care Animal Hospital offers a wide array of veterinary care for pets. Based on information available for Vetco Total Care hospitals, these services typically include:
- **Routine Wellness:** Comprehensive nose-to-tail exams, diagnostics and comprehensive bloodwork, early detection and disease screenings, oral exams and dental cleanings, behavior and anxiety evaluations, and nutritional consultations.
- **Vaccinations:** A full suite of vaccinations for both dogs and cats, including Rabies, Distemper & Parvo, Canine Influenza, Leptospirosis, Bordetella/Kennel Cough, Lyme, Feline 3-in-1 (FVRCP), and Feline Leukemia (FeLV).
- **Flea, Tick & Heartworm Prevention:** Flea, tick, and heartworm protection, heartworm and tick-borne disease testing, deworming, and fecal testing.
- **Illness & Injury Treatment:** Addressing a range of conditions such as skin and coat issues, allergies, ear infections and eye conditions, diarrhea and vomiting, pain, limping and lameness, wounds (including abscesses, bites, lacerations, and puncture repairs), changes in appetite, excessive drinking and/or urination, excessive panting, bad breath, fractured teeth or oral trauma, and even some cancer treatments.
- **Imaging, Surgery & Dentistry:** Dental cleanings and extractions, dental X-rays, mass removal and biopsy, foreign body removal, X-ray and ultrasound, and spay/neuter procedures.
- **Prescriptions:** Management and dispensing of various pet medications.
Key **features** of Vetco Total Care Animal Hospital often emphasized by the company include affordability and convenience due to its location within Petco. The availability of online and in-app scheduling aims to simplify the appointment process. A prominent feature is the commitment to providing accessible and personalized solutions, striving to offer transparent pricing with no exam fees for certain services (particularly vaccination clinics), and opportunities for savings on prescription pest solutions. The hospital also manages pet prescriptions and offers pet insurance information, further contributing to their "total care" approach.
However, customer reviews provide a mixed perspective on the actual experience. One highly positive review highlights the "excellent experiences" with both cats and a new puppy, praising the staff as "very knowledgeable and kind," and appreciative of them "always listened to my concerns." Specifically, Dr. Simmons is commended for being "wonderful," listening attentively, and explaining care details thoroughly. This suggests that when the experience is positive, it is genuinely excellent, with a strong focus on patient care and clear communication from the veterinary staff.
Conversely, another detailed review outlines significant negative experiences, citing "awful experiences 80% of the time." These concerns include:
- **Staff Interactions:** Staff being "flustered and seldom friendly."
- **Communication Issues:** Poor communication between staff members (e.g., vet tech and front desk).
- **Billing Discrepancies:** Being charged for tests that were not run and then asked to pay again.
- **Vaccine Reminders:** Inaccurate or non-existent reminders for vaccines and annual visits, leading to pets being overdue or unnecessarily brought in for already up-to-date vaccinations.
- **Medication Refill Policies:** Refusal to refill daily medication for an overdue annual visit, even after scheduling the soonest available appointment, and unwillingness to provide a temporary refill to prevent abrupt cessation of medication.
For **promotional information**, Vetco Total Care Animal Hospital generally positions itself as a convenient, affordable, and full-service veterinary option. Their co-location within Petco stores is a major selling point, making it easy for pet owners to combine veterinary visits with their regular pet shopping. They often promote their comprehensive services from routine checkups and vaccinations to dental care and surgeries, aiming to cover all aspects of a pet's health journey. The emphasis on affordability is also a key message, suggesting that quality care doesn't have to come with prohibitive costs. However, prospective clients should balance these promotional claims with the range of customer experiences, particularly those concerning communication, billing accuracy, and medication refill policies, to form a complete picture of what to expect from this particular Vetco Total Care location.

Mar 15, 2025 · Hayley StarlingI’ve brought my two dogs here since they were pups (older one is now 5) and have had awful experiences 80% of the time. The staff is always flustered and seldom friendly, there’s poor communication between staff members (vet tech and front desk for example), I’ve been charged for tests that were not run & then told I had to pay again for said test at the next visit (spoke with manager at length to get this mostly resolved though I did pay double disposal fees). The reminders for vaccines are either non-existent or inaccurate (email reports Pup needs a vax and then I take her in and staff tells me she’s actually up to date - multiple occurrences with this). The reminders for annual visits are non-existent so the pet ends up being overdue. My dog needs refills on a daily med and Vetco said he’s overdue in an annual visit so won’t refill it, but also refused to provide a one month refill so he won’t run out, AFTER I scheduled a visit for their soonest available date. Abruptly stopping daily medication can come with harmful results and they are not accommodating at all. They don’t seem to actually care about the pets at all, just about making money. Two out of three doctors I’ve seen have at least been friendly. Given their location being nearby, I dealt with all the negatives for years, but I cannot any longer. I recommend pet families seek care elsewhere, the few dollars you may or may not save at Vetco is not worth it at all. We will be going to Banfield instead.
Mar 14, 2025 · Nicole KI spoke with a representative at 2:30 PM regarding my 3:45 PM appointment, during which I was informed of what to bring. However, upon arriving 10 minutes early, I was told that my appointment had not been confirmed, despite my previous call, and I was not seen. This unexpected situation has unfortunately disrupted my vacation plans. When I requested a contact number to speak with someone about the issue, I was informed that no such number was available and that I would need to return to the same location, which previously declined to accommodate my dog. I find this experience to be quite perplexing.*
Aug 08, 2024 · Blackk KkcalbMy puppy is my world and I am so thankful for Dr. Elizabeth Jordan when she got sick. Dr. Jordan shows the kindness and compassion that every pet owner wants when they go in for an emergency appointment. It is clear that she prioritizes the welfare of your pet over maximizing profits; that combined with her expertise and resourcefulness has given me comfort that Mila is in good hands. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend her to anyone, she has truly been exceptional. The staff is also well qualified, professional, and passionate about what they do. I’ve been consistently impressed by the quality and affordability of services, and how dedicated the staff are to helping my puppy return to her healthy and happy self.
Sep 26, 2019 · Alicia OllerWe’ve gone to this office since they opened and really like to see Dr. Tiller, as she seems very reasonable and competent and is always willing to talk through the treatment plan. Dr. Williams seems strong and experienced too. No cat loves going to the vet, but they get a thorough exam and testing done while keeping the pets comfortable. No one loves vet prices either, and they have gone up over the years since opening, but they’re still within the expected range or better. The front desk person may be their strongest asset - always pleasant and helpful.
