VCA Portage Animal Hospital

Was more of a sales pitch for a program to keep your dog healthy by paying a hefty monthly fee than the actual health of the dog. We brought in two dogs for check-ups, and the veterinarian would only examin the dog that was a candidate for this program. Literally said she wouldn't examine the other dog who wasn't a candidate because she was up on her shots and didn't need the program.

The staff are always so friendly and helpful! I take all 4 of my animals here and they always get me in quickly and are wonderful. They always go over the treatment plan with prices before doing anything, so I don’t feel pressured to add on tons of extra services like other vet offices. -Stacey Davis

While sobbing over having to put my childhood cat to sleep, the assistant decided it was a good idea to walk into the room and ask for payment while my family and I were crying in each other’s arms. Both her, and the vet himself seemed very nonchalant and unsympathetic towards our situation which made me feel sick on top of the immense grief I was already feeling. I get it, you pay for services at a hospital, but in a field like this, people skills and ANY ability to read the room should be a requirement. These people don’t seem like they have a passion for taking care of these animals, and I strongly advise anyone searching for a veterinarian to visit, to find another animal hospital. Shaver road was great and actually seemed to care about my cat almost as much as his own family did. 1/5 stars, would go lower if I could.

We had to put down our 15 year old dog Levi and amidst one of the saddest moments of our lives, the kindness and sincerity of the staff was a bright light during our stormy day. They were extremely kind and sympathetic from the phone call to make the appointment, to during the appointment, to two weeks after when they sent us a card signed by the staff. I cannot say enough good things about this staff and this animal hospital and I will recommend them to anyone and everyone. Their presence and sincerity was exactly what we needed during this terrible time and I will forever be grateful to them for the love they showed us. A big and sincere thank you goes to all of them, and my husband and I feel very blessed to have worked with them, even under the circumstances.

Sad to say that after 20 years and 5 cats, we're taking our pets elsewhere. Prices here are now 300%-400% higher than other Veterinarians in the area. I took my 4 month old kitten to VCA to be spayed. VCA wanted over $500.00 for the "required" shots and exams prior to spaying. Then the spaying itself is almost $500.00. I immediately called another vet that was recommended to me to verify these costs. WOW! The other Vet in Schoolcraft is literally 20% of the cost. For example; Vca wanted a $198.00 blood panel PLUS $500.00 for the procedure. Not including the other "required" tests and shots. "Other Vet" charges $200 for the procedure including the blood panel. OUTRAGEOUS! I'm not happy about this decision after 20 years, but I simply cannot justify paying 300%-400% more for the same procedures. Especially when the "Other" Veterinarian has much higher 🌟 reviews. 🥺

All about the money and not the care. Brought Simba in for a hot spot and a tick, right next to each other. Asked them twice to remove the tick. They came in twice to get me to sign for new fees to clip and clean hot spot. Walked out after paying bill, not clipped and cleaned and the tick enjoyed another ride on Simba home, where my wife and I removed it. Never again.
