My first experience with this vet was on an early Monday morning. My dog darted out the door when my kids left for school and was hit by a car. She was in bad shape. I went to the first vet for help and was turned away. Sitting in my car crying with this poor dog looking for another nearby vet. I called vca and they told me to come right over. I walked in to a very very compassionate staff and right into a room. I had to put her down that day. They had made a pawprint for me and a token of her fur in a keepsake jar which we keep by her favorite toy to this day. Fast forward to about 3 years ago, we decided to adopt a dog a few years later. The staff and vet have been extremely transparent about the treatment plans and costs. It may cost a little bit extra, but they listen and care. If you want your animal treated like one of your family members, this is your spot. My dog is a big scared baby and they are very careful and mindful of that to not upset her anymore. Thank you guys for all you do. The facilities are clean and professional and doesn't smell like a kennel when you are there.

Welcome to VCA County West Animal Hospital
VCA County West Animal Hospital, located at 1709 W Merchant St in Kankakee, Illinois, is a pet hospital providing a range of veterinary services to the local community. They can be contacted at (815) 614-3902 or +1 815-614-3902. Based on the available online reviews, experiences with VCA County West Animal Hospital present a mixed picture, showcasing instances of exceptional compassion and professionalism alongside a recent serious complaint regarding patient care.
One detailed positive review recounts a critical early Monday morning experience. The reviewer's dog was severely injured after being hit by a car, and they were turned away by another veterinary clinic. Upon calling VCA County West Animal Hospital, they were immediately told to come over. The reviewer emphasizes the "very very compassionate staff" who promptly attended to their pet. Unfortunately, the dog's condition necessitated euthanasia, and the staff demonstrated remarkable empathy by creating a paw print and a keepsake jar containing the dog's fur, which the family still cherishes. This experience highlights the hospital's capacity for compassionate care during emotionally challenging times, particularly in emergency situations.
The same reviewer also shares their experience adopting another dog a few years later and continuing to use VCA County West Animal Hospital for their care. They praise the staff and veterinarians for their transparency regarding treatment plans and associated costs. While noting that the services might be "a little bit extra" in terms of cost, they emphasize the value derived from the attentive and caring approach. They feel their dog is treated like a family member, and the staff is particularly mindful of their dog's anxious temperament, taking extra care to avoid upsetting her. The reviewer also commends the cleanliness and professional atmosphere of the facilities, noting that it does not have the typical "kennel smell."
However, contrasting sharply with this positive feedback are two negative reviews. One simply states, "Zero stars is what this place should get," offering no further explanation. This extreme negative sentiment, while lacking detail, indicates a significant level of dissatisfaction from at least one customer.
The second negative review provides a specific and concerning account of a recent experience. The reviewer states that the hospital "has gone down hill over the last year." They describe picking up their dog after a procedure and finding her "soaked with urine," alleging that she was left unattended in this state without being checked or cleaned. The reviewer expresses outrage and announces their intention to file an official complaint and switch to a different veterinary clinic. They found the explanation provided by the hospital ("oh we did not realize that") to be a "febrile excuse" and demand better standards of care. This review raises serious concerns about the level of attention and basic hygiene provided to patients at the clinic, at least in this particular instance.
Considering these varied experiences, the environment at VCA County West Animal Hospital appears to be generally clean and professional, as mentioned in the positive review. The prompt and compassionate response during an emergency situation also suggests a well-organized and caring team capable of handling critical cases. The presence of a transparent approach to treatment plans and costs indicates a commitment to open communication with pet owners.
The services likely offered at VCA County West Animal Hospital, typical of a full-service pet hospital, would include:
- Emergency and critical care services (as evidenced by the first positive review).
- Routine wellness examinations and vaccinations.
- Diagnostic services, including laboratory testing and imaging.
- Surgical procedures (implied by the mention of a "procedure" in the negative review).
- Dental care.
- Management of chronic illnesses.
- Prescription medication dispensing.
- End-of-life care (as highlighted in the compassionate handling of the first pet's euthanasia).
- Anesthesia and patient monitoring during procedures.
The features of VCA County West Animal Hospital, based on the reviews, include:
- Compassionate emergency care: The immediate acceptance and empathetic handling of a critical emergency stand out.
- Transparent communication: Clear explanations of treatment plans and costs are appreciated by a long-term customer.
- Caring and attentive staff: The willingness to listen to pet owners' concerns and the gentle handling of anxious animals are noted positively.
- Clean and professional facilities: The environment is described as well-maintained and not having a typical kennel odor.
However, a significant concern is raised by the negative review detailing a lack of basic patient care and hygiene. This suggests a potential inconsistency in the level of attention provided to all animals or a recent decline in standards, as indicated by the reviewer who felt the hospital had "gone down hill over the last year."
Currently, there is no promotional information available in the provided text. There are no mentions of special offers for new clients, discounts on specific services, or any other marketing initiatives. Therefore, local users seeking information on promotions would need to contact the hospital directly.
In conclusion, VCA County West Animal Hospital in Kankakee, IL, presents a complex profile based on the limited online reviews. While there is strong evidence of compassionate and professional care, particularly in emergency situations and in their ongoing communication with some clients, a recent serious complaint regarding patient neglect cannot be ignored. Local users considering VCA County West Animal Hospital should weigh these contrasting experiences. The positive aspects, such as the caring staff and clean facilities, are counterbalanced by the concerning allegations of inadequate post-procedural care. It would be prudent for potential clients to inquire about their current protocols for patient monitoring and hygiene and to seek further information or recent testimonials to gain a more comprehensive understanding of the hospital's current standards of care.

Feb 01, 2025 · Rachel KernZero stars is what this place should get. This place has gone down hill over the last year. I picked my dog up today from a procedure and she was soaked with urine. They left her sitting in urine and never checked her or cleaned her up. We will be filing an official complaint and switching to a different Vet Clinic that actually cares about the well being of your pet. This was absolutely uncalled for. When we called there they gave us a febible excuse, oh we did not realize that. DO BETTER
Dec 10, 2024 · Joe KoloskyI absolutely LOVE VCA COUNTY WEST in Kankakee, Il! We have 2 dogs that we’ve been bringing them to since they were puppies ! One of our fur babies isn’t quite “ normal” we got him when he was only 2 weeks old . He was raised by humans and it shows . He has HUGE HUGE anxiety and fear that everyone is out to hurt him or us , his mom and dad ..He’s very scared when it comes to “strangers” and when he’s scared he sometimes can even act “ aggesive” . Anyway , our baby ( he’s 95 lbs ) had a seizure.. still unknown why.. all his blood work came back normal.. but I just want to give a HUGE thank you to his tech , Melinda Montgomery, otherwise known as Mindy .. she made this difficult visit so much easier by being very knowledgeable about Migo’s anxiety issues . She was very comforting to Migo and made him feel more at ease. And Dr B was also amazing !!! She also saw Migo’s fear and handled the situation so well !! We didn’t even have to put a muzzle on him ! I can’t say enough about VCA county West !! I love them !! Highly recommend!! The black and white one is Migo ! But thank you again Melinda and Dr B !! You guys have one of the hardest jobs ever ! You never know when a bite is coming 😭😭 . I will always bring my fur babies to VCA !!
Feb 21, 2022 · Kelly ChandlerThese are the most caring and compassionate people. We have had to bring two of our dogs in and they could not have been nicer or more accommodating. Can not recommend enough.
Sep 06, 2024 · Karen RegnierThe staff at VCA is phenomenal. They were always willing to take the time to explain all options available for treatment, and I never felt like they were pushy. They took wonderful care of my Louie every time we had a visit. Unfortunately, Lou passed last year, but VCA is still at the top of my list. I will be bringing the newest feline addition to our family to see them soon!
