Welcome to VCA Atwood Animal Hospital
VCA Atwood Animal Hospital, located at 342 Atwood Ave, Cranston, RI 02920, USA, serves as a comprehensive pet hospital dedicated to providing a wide array of veterinary services. As a part of the broader VCA Animal Hospitals network, this facility aims to offer attentive and professional care for a variety of pets, primarily focusing on dogs and cats. The hospital can be reached by phone at (401) 942-7360 or via mobile at +1 401-942-7360, making it accessible for scheduling appointments and addressing urgent inquiries.
The facility operates under the "Pet Hospital" category, signifying its primary role in offering medical, surgical, and preventative care for companion animals. This categorization suggests a structured environment equipped to handle routine check-ups, vaccinations, diagnostics, and more complex medical procedures. The services provided are designed to support the overall health and well-being of pets throughout their lives, from puppy and kitten stages to senior years.
While specific details about the interior aesthetics and exact layout are not extensively publicized, VCA Atwood Animal Hospital is generally expected to maintain a professional and welcoming environment. As a veterinary care facility, it would typically feature dedicated examination rooms designed to be comfortable for both pets and their owners, a reception area for check-ins and waiting, and specialized areas for treatments, surgery, and diagnostics. The environment is likely maintained with cleanliness and hygiene as top priorities, essential for preventing the spread of illness and ensuring a safe space for sick or recovering animals. Efforts are usually made to create a calming atmosphere, recognizing that veterinary visits can be stressful for pets. This might include soothing colors, minimal noise, and separate waiting areas for different types of animals if space permits. The design typically prioritizes efficiency to allow for smooth patient flow, from arrival to examination to discharge.
VCA Atwood Animal Hospital, as a full-service pet hospital, is expected to offer a comprehensive suite of veterinary services. These services are typically categorized to address different aspects of pet health:
- Preventative Care: This forms the cornerstone of their offerings and generally includes routine wellness examinations, vaccinations tailored to the pet's lifestyle and risk factors, parasite prevention (fleas, ticks, heartworm), and nutritional counseling. Regular check-ups are crucial for early detection of potential health issues.
- Diagnostic Services: To accurately diagnose illnesses, the hospital would likely utilize various diagnostic tools. This commonly includes in-house laboratory services for blood work, urinalysis, and fecal exams. Radiography (X-rays) and potentially ultrasound capabilities would also be available for imaging internal structures. These tools allow veterinarians to gain a comprehensive understanding of a pet's internal health.
- Medical Services: For pets experiencing illness or chronic conditions, the hospital provides medical consultations, ongoing disease management, and prescription medications. This can range from treating common infections to managing complex diseases like diabetes or kidney failure.
- Surgical Services: A pet hospital typically offers a range of surgical procedures, from routine spaying and neutering to more complex soft tissue surgeries. Pre-surgical blood work, anesthesia monitoring, and post-operative care are integral parts of their surgical protocols, ensuring the safety and recovery of the pet.
- Dental Care: Oral health is a significant component of overall pet wellness. Services would include professional dental cleanings (scaling and polishing under anesthesia), extractions of diseased teeth, and advice on at-home dental care.
- Emergency and Urgent Care: While not explicitly stated as a 24/7 emergency center, many VCA locations provide urgent care during their operational hours for acute illnesses or injuries that require immediate attention. For after-hours emergencies, they would typically refer clients to a dedicated emergency veterinary hospital.
- Microchipping: A vital service for pet identification and recovery if a pet becomes lost.
- Pharmacy Services: The hospital likely maintains an on-site pharmacy for convenient dispensing of medications prescribed during visits.
As part of the VCA network, VCA Atwood Animal Hospital benefits from broader resources and standards. Key features generally include:
- Experienced Staff: The hospital would employ a team of veterinarians, licensed veterinary technicians, and support staff. While specific credentials are not detailed, VCA generally emphasizes ongoing training and professional development for their teams.
- Technology and Equipment: Access to modern veterinary equipment for diagnostics and treatment is a standard feature, allowing for effective and efficient care.
- Comprehensive Approach: The hospital is expected to take a holistic view of pet health, considering factors beyond just immediate symptoms to include lifestyle, nutrition, and preventative measures.
- Client Communication: Effective communication with pet owners is crucial. This includes explaining diagnoses, treatment options, and home care instructions clearly.
- Online Resources: VCA often provides online resources for pet owners, such as educational articles, appointment scheduling portals, and prescription refill requests, enhancing convenience.
Promotional activities for VCA Atwood Animal Hospital would likely align with VCA's overall marketing strategies, which often include:
- Wellness Plans: Many VCA hospitals offer wellness plans, which are bundled packages of preventative care services designed to make routine veterinary care more affordable and predictable for pet owners. These plans often include unlimited exams, vaccinations, and discounts on other services.
- New Client Offers: Promotions for first-time clients, such as a discounted initial exam or a complimentary consultation, are common to encourage new pet owners to visit.
- Online Presence: Active engagement on social media platforms and a well-maintained website for information dissemination, testimonials, and online scheduling.
- Community Involvement: Participation in local pet-related events or partnerships with animal shelters.
Customer reviews offer valuable insights into the daily operations and client experience at VCA Atwood Animal Hospital. One positive review highlights a long-standing relationship with the hospital, spanning seven years for multiple pets (two cats and one dog), emphasizing "very good care." This suggests consistency in service and a build-up of trust over time, which is a significant factor in veterinary care relationships. The mention of a "care team" implies a collaborative approach to pet health.
Conversely, another review details a highly negative experience, primarily revolving around perceived miscommunication regarding pricing for a rabies shot and a disagreement regarding surgical recommendations. The client reported being quoted one price for a "tech visit" for a rabies shot, only to be charged triple upon arrival. This highlights the critical importance of clear and consistent communication regarding costs. Furthermore, the client expressed dissatisfaction with a veterinarian's alleged negative remarks about their decision to seek surgery elsewhere and about another doctor. The client's assertion that the doctor said, "well you don’t do anything else with us soo," suggests a perceived lack of value for their patronage, and the threat of sending the bill to collections for a misunderstanding about pricing further strained the relationship. The comment about the dog not being due for a check-up until next month also hints at a perception of being pressured for unnecessary services.
These contrasting reviews underscore the varied experiences clients can have. The positive review indicates that for some, the hospital provides reliable and consistent care over many years. The negative review, however, points to potential issues with pricing transparency, communication within the staff (blaming another tech), and professional conduct regarding external referrals. For potential new clients, it is important to consider both perspectives and perhaps inquire specifically about pricing policies and communication protocols during their initial contact. While the hospital aims to provide comprehensive care, these reviews suggest that individual experiences can vary significantly, especially concerning financial transparency and interpersonal interactions with staff.

May 12, 2025 · María José Guevara OrtúzarTook my male dog to this place for a check up and rabies shot made an appointment with the tech to get my female dog rabies shots. She told us it was going to be the price of a rabies shot as a tech visit we get there today and it’s triple the price and the doctor decides to talk crap about decisions on our male dog. The same girl who told us just a vet tech visit is putting the blame on another girl. Crazy how this places lies to you. When we told them we were having the dogs surgery from someone different then what this Dr wanted us to go to she did not like that and started talking bad about another Dr NOT GOD IN MY EYES. when we said your tech told us the price Dr said sorry about that we’ll send it to collections. Her (Dr) said well you don’t do anything else with us soo. Our dog isn’t due for check up till next month crazy, what do they want us to go for nothing and get lied too sad.
Mar 11, 2025 · Lucky13RacingMy dog went here his entire life, 14 years. I noticed a huge change in service and care after they became a chain. They do not care much about the pets and cared more about profit. I called numerous times for sick visits and they told me they could not take my dog for over a month. I ended up at Ocean state (which apparently owns Atwood) in order to get my dog the care he needed several times. My dog was on special food at times for stomach issues, and the secretary would fight me over getting his prescription food (Karen) when I needed it because he hasn’t been for his “routine check ups”. I had to call back and speak to a doctor and explain that because Atwood would not see him, I had to go to Ocean state where he got blood work and full exams. Atwood would call to check in after receiving details from Ocean State afterwards. No follow-ups or further steps, just checked in to make sure he was “okay”. Lastly, December 2024, I took my dog to be examined after having multiple seizures. They charged me hundreds of dollars and said he is fine. He passed away the next day. If I was to get another dog I would not take him/her here. Please find another vet that is not a chain and truly cares about the animals.
Apr 02, 2025 · Andrea DumicanWe’ve entrusted our dogs to this practice for nearly 13 years, but what once felt like a compassionate, community-driven clinic has deteriorated into a corporatized shell of its former self. Since VCA took over, the level of care has nosedived. Emergency appointments? Good luck. You’re looking at wait times of weeks! Standards have plummeted. Prices, meanwhile, have skyrocketed beyond reason, with every interaction dripping in profit-driven motives. The front desk, the techs, the vets—it’s clear the directive is upsell, upsell, upsell. I feel more like I’m being pitched at a trade show rather than receiving care for a beloved family member. What’s possibly most telling is the revolving door of staff. Some of the most talented, compassionate techs and vets we’ve come to know over the years have left. The turnover is staggering and speaks volumes about what’s happening behind the scenes. A place that once felt warm and steady is now cold, unfamiliar, and unstable. It breaks my wife and me to know that in our dog’s final years, we’ll have to uproot her, leave what should have been a safe and familiar place, and scramble to find a new vet who still remembers that care comes before profit. VCA, this is shameful. Do better. Pets—and the people who love them—deserve far more than this.
Apr 17, 2025 · Derrick MerhiGreat staff & vets (5 star) but prices are outrageous (1 star) so I had to look for a more affordable vet. To give some context here my dogs had their teeth cleaned with a couple extractions in July 2023, cost was about $1,500 each, which was not cheap to begin with & took me a year to pay off on my credit card. I just got a new dental cleaning estimate from them for $2,665-$3,149 not even 2 years later & costs have gone up 77%-109% which is just astronomical & I don't know how anyone can afford these increases.
