I stopped at Urgent Vet in a panic, possibly the day they opened because my dog fell down the steps and her nail split up the middle. Every single person there was kind, attentive, and obviously all love animals. Very affordable as well! Highly recommend!

Welcome to UrgentVet

UrgentVet, located at 8872 Covenant Ave, Pittsburgh, PA 15237, USA, is a distinct type of "Pet Hospital" that has carved out a crucial niche in the veterinary landscape. Its core mission is to bridge the gap between routine daytime veterinary care and 24/7 emergency veterinary hospitals. This means UrgentVet specializes in providing immediate, high-quality care for non-life-threatening illnesses and injuries that occur after normal business hours, on weekends, or during holidays, when a pet's regular veterinarian might be closed and a full emergency room might be overkill in terms of cost and severity.

The environment at UrgentVet is specifically designed to be less stressful for pets and their owners, differentiating itself from the often intense and high-stakes atmosphere of a traditional emergency room. Reviews frequently highlight the kindness, attentiveness, and genuine love for animals displayed by every staff member. This creates a comforting and reassuring atmosphere, especially during what can be a panicky time for pet owners. The clinic aims for efficiency without sacrificing compassion. They strive to make pets feel important, and owners feel supported and heard. Facilities are thoughtfully designed with "Fear-Free" principles in mind, including features like non-slip flooring, dimmable lighting, soothing colors, soft music, and calming pheromones. Many UrgentVet locations also boast species-specific exam rooms (dog and cat separate) and even dedicated spaces for large and small dogs, further reducing anxiety. The presence of a "private comfort room" for sensitive situations underscores their commitment to compassionate care, particularly during difficult moments like end-of-life decisions.

UrgentVet offers a focused range of services tailored to urgent, non-life-threatening conditions. Their business model emphasizes providing quick, convenient, and affordable care for issues that require prompt attention but are not critical emergencies. This includes, but is not limited to, the following services:

  • Minor Injuries and Wounds: This covers a variety of issues such as cuts, scrapes, minor lacerations, abscesses, and split nails, as exemplified by a customer's experience with a German Shepherd's split nail. They are equipped to handle post-operative incision checks as well.

  • Gastrointestinal Issues: Common complaints like vomiting, diarrhea, inappetence, and excessive drinking can be addressed. They aim to diagnose the cause and provide initial treatment to alleviate symptoms and prevent worsening.

  • Skin and Ear Conditions: This includes allergic reactions, skin irritations, hot spots, itching, rashes, and ear infections (with symptoms like head shaking or ear discharge), as noted in a review.

  • Urinary Tract Problems: Issues such as increased frequency, straining, or blood in urine are commonly treated.

  • Respiratory Ailments: Symptoms like coughing and sneezing can be evaluated and managed.

  • Limping and Lameness: For pets showing signs of discomfort or favoring a limb, UrgentVet can assess for minor sprains, strains, or potential fractures (though severe fractures requiring extensive orthopedic surgery would be referred).

  • Eye Problems: Addressing issues like eye discharge, squinting, or redness.

  • General Malaise: For pets that are lethargic, "just not feeling well," or exhibiting other subtle signs of illness.

  • Diagnostic Capabilities: Each clinic is typically equipped with digital X-ray machines and in-house laboratory equipment for quick diagnostic testing, allowing for rapid and accurate assessments of a pet's condition. They may also have limited ultrasound capabilities.

  • Pain Management: Providing immediate relief for pets experiencing pain due to injury or illness.

  • End-of-Life Care: While not a primary service, they do offer euthanasia, providing compassionate support during a difficult time for pet owners, as implied by their focus on patient comfort and comprehensive care.

A key feature of UrgentVet is its innovative business model. It specifically targets cases that are urgent but not life-threatening, providing an essential middle ground between a primary care veterinarian and a full-scale 24/7 emergency hospital. This approach aims to provide faster service and more affordable care compared to emergency vets, often operating at rates up to 40% less. They are open after hours, on weekends, and holidays, 365 days a year, with typical hours being 3 PM-11 PM Monday-Friday and 10 AM-8 PM on weekends and holidays. This ensures that pet owners have an immediate option when their regular vet is closed. While walk-ins are accepted, they also offer an online check-in system where clients can "save their spot" to minimize waiting time, allowing them to wait comfortably at home until their turn. UrgentVet explicitly states they do not provide wellness care, vaccinations, boarding, or grooming, focusing solely on acute conditions. They also emphasize seamless communication with a pet's primary veterinarian, sending detailed letters and records for follow-up care to ensure continuity.

From a promotional standpoint, UrgentVet highlights convenience, affordability, and specialized urgent care. Their messaging focuses on being "the clinic for pets who can't wait to feel better," emphasizing immediate relief and expert diagnosis without the high costs or long waits often associated with traditional emergency clinics. The testimonials provided reinforce these claims, with customers praising the staff's knowledge, efficiency, and compassionate approach, making them feel like their pet was the "most important thing." The phrase "his diagnosis was spot on, Georgie was feeling better the next day!" underscores their effectiveness in treating urgent conditions. By offering an alternative that is both accessible and cost-effective, UrgentVet fills a critical need in the community, providing peace of mind for pet owners when unexpected health issues arise outside of regular clinic hours.

Everyone we dealt with made us feel like our dog was the most important thing in their world. Efficient. Caring. Knowledgeable. The business model of filling the gap between our vet and an emergency hospital is brilliant! Amalia was great with Georgie and Dr. threadgill was impressive and his diagnosis was spot on, Georgie was feeling better the next day!

I can’t say enough good things about Urgent Care Vet McClandless From the moment we walked in with our puppy, we felt completely at ease. The staff is incredibly welcoming, knowledgeable, and clearly passionate about animals. They took the time to answer all our questions, explain everything thoroughly, and made sure our little pup felt safe and comfortable during the entire visit. Our puppy needed some extra care, and the team went above and beyond to help him. The follow-up support was fantastic, and we truly felt like they cared as much about his well-being as we do. We’re so grateful to have found a place we can trust. Highly recommend to any pet parent looking for compassionate and professional veterinary care!

I took my dog to Urgent Vet because he had diarrhea and a dark bloody stool. My regular vet was booked solid for two weeks. I was very pleased with how easy it was to schedule an appointment online, and how wonderful the staff was when we arrived at the facility. We arrived early, and one of the staff allowed us to come in to the office area early because it was hot outside and they could see that my dog was getting overheated. Once inside the facility, it was very clean, calm, and quiet. There were no other animals in the facility, and they played very relaxing music in the patient room My dog’s vitals were taken and they asked for some background information about my dog. When the veterinarian came in, we discussed what procedures could be done to determine why my dog was not feeling well. One of the things I was very, very pleased with was how they did not pressure me into any type of extraneous testing to see what was wrong with my dog. They suggested tests, and when I suggested that we do them one at a time to determine if that was the cause of my dog illness, they were perfectly fine with that. In the end, we ended up having three tests done, and the vet veterinarian went over the results with me. She was very kind and considerate to me and my dog. She treated us with respect and understanding. The day after the visit I received an email with the details of the visit. I also received a phone call asking how my dog was recovering. I would highly recommend Urgent Vet McCandless.

Our dog was in pain and we needed to bring him in for an unexpected late night visit. Carley, Meagan and Dr. Threadgill were amazing. They did such an great job getting our dog in quickly and making both him and us feel comfortable. Our dog is well taken care of with Urgent Vet and the team we mentioned above. Thank you all.
