Dr. Colleen is a very important person in my life. She has provided professional and loving care for our dogs over the past 4 years. She listens with generosity and has helped me articulate care goals for our senior dog. Over time, Dr. Colleen gently reminded me of those goals and most recently supported me when we peacefully said good bye to our Bella in our home. Not only is Dr. Colleen a highly competent veterinarian, she is caring, nonjudgmental, responsive, and collaborative. I trust her explicitly and deeply appreciate the wisdom and care she shared our canine family over the years.

Environment: A Focus on Comfort and Calm

The environment cultivated by The Holistic Vet of Vermont, LLC, especially through their in-home services, is designed to minimize stress and maximize comfort for pets and their families. While they maintain an office, the heart of their unique offering lies in bringing veterinary care directly to the familiar and reassuring surroundings of the pet's home. This is particularly crucial for senior pets, those struggling with pain or disease, and during sensitive moments like euthanasia. By eliminating the need for stressful car rides or unfamiliar clinic settings, Dr. Colleen ensures a serene and peaceful experience. For in-home visits, the focus is on creating a calm atmosphere within the client's residence, allowing pets to remain at ease and surrounded by their loved ones. The commitment to a fear-free approach is also a noted characteristic, aiming to reduce physical and emotional stress for animals during their treatments. This personalized, gentle approach truly transforms the typical veterinary environment into a comforting space.

Services: Integrative and Compassionate Care

The Holistic Vet of Vermont, LLC provides an array of services that blend the best of both conventional and holistic veterinary medicine. Dr. Colleen's philosophy emphasizes an integrative approach, believing that utilizing both Western and Eastern medical techniques offers the most comprehensive care for animals. Her services cater to a wide range of needs, with a particular focus on senior pets and quality-of-life care.

Key services include:

  • Hospice and End-of-Life Care: This is a cornerstone of Dr. Colleen's practice. She provides empathetic support and guidance through the difficult journey of a pet's final stages of life. This includes in-home euthanasia, a service deeply valued by clients for allowing pets to pass peacefully in their familiar environment, surrounded by family. Dr. Colleen assists families in planning in advance to ensure a calm and dignified farewell, often acting as a supportive guide similar to a human hospice nurse.
  • Holistic Therapies: Dr. Colleen integrates various holistic modalities to support overall health and address chronic conditions. These may include:
    • Acupuncture: Used to rebalance the body's energy flow, reduce pain and inflammation, and improve function.
    • Herbal Medicine: Utilizing traditional Chinese herbs and Western botanicals to support various bodily systems and address imbalances.
    • Food Therapy: Providing guidance on nutrition and dietary adjustments to support a pet's health and well-being.
    • Tui-na (Chinese Medical Massage): A form of therapeutic massage that helps with circulation and pain relief.
  • Quality of Life Telehealth Consultations: Offering virtual consultations to discuss a pet's quality of life, especially for aging or chronically ill animals, providing guidance and support to pet parents from a distance.
  • Customized Pet Memorial Keepsakes: A thoughtful service that helps families commemorate their beloved companions after they have passed, providing a tangible memory during the grieving process.

It's important to note that The Holistic Vet of Vermont, LLC is not a full-service veterinary facility for emergencies or conventional medicine (except for in-home euthanasia and occasional sedatives for holistic treatments). They firmly believe in an integrative approach and therefore require pets to have a primary conventional veterinarian for general care, diagnostics, and emergency needs. Dr. Colleen's services are designed to complement, not replace, traditional veterinary care, ensuring pets receive comprehensive benefits from both approaches.

Dr. Colleen Flaherty is the best support for anyone who has a beloved pet who is aging or struggling with pain or disease. We made the difficult decision to euthanize our companion of 14 years this winter. I could not have done it without Colleen's support and guidance. She is trained in the same way as one of the best hospice nurses for humans would be. Planning in advance and knowing that we wouldn't have Lucas' goodbye be rushed and chaotic was a blessing. Colleen helped make his last moments at home with us peaceful and reassuring. The grieving is still there, but there are no regrets about the decision. Our traditional veterinarian said it was the kindest and most selfless thing we could do. It doesn't always feel like that, but what I can say is that choosing to do at-home euthanasia with Dr. Flaherty by our side and the whole family gathered around Lucas made it much easier. If you are faced with a similar situation, I'm sorry for your pain, and I recommend reaching out to Dr. Flaherty to ease that pain.

Dr Colleen has helped our family tremendously! She has provided us with a holistic care plan for our 6 year old cat who got a cancer diagnosis in February. The plan includes acupuncture herbs and a new raw food diet. In combination with chemo and Dr Colleen our cat has done almost a 180 in her overall health and energy. She is playful and loving as she always has been. Our kitty is in the best hands and we are so grateful to Colleen to step in to help our unique situation.

Dr Colleen provided excellent alternative care and acupuncture for our 3 pets in the past 10 years. Her compassion patience and guidance were invaluable when making the decision to let go of our pets when it was time. Choosing to euthanize our pets at home was the best possible option for us at a very difficult time and we wouldn't do it any other way. Marie and Peter Wall & Gusty, Flurry, and Jasper. My sweet older dog has a history of leg and back issues and was showing signs of cognitive decline, but is now back to running with his dog friends, playing with toys, and sleeping through the night. After many years of ups and downs with his health, I never would have expected him to be thriving at this age. He has responded very well to acupuncture and Dr. Flaherty has been so helpful in providing guidance to adapt to my dog's needs as he ages.
