The environment at Southland Veterinary Hospital is overwhelmingly described as deeply caring, empathetic, and patient. Client testimonials paint a vivid picture of a clinic where genuine love and compassion for animals are evident in every interaction. The staff, including individuals like Millie, are highlighted as "amazing," "caring," and "empathetic," going "the extra mile for your beloved animals." This nurturing atmosphere extends even to challenging situations, as evidenced by the anecdote of a "puma with a bad attitude" cat who, despite her difficult demeanor during visits, was met with unwavering "patient, understanding and kind" treatment. This dedication to handling every animal with grace, regardless of temperament, creates a remarkably stress-reducing and trusting environment for both pets and their owners. The long-term relationships forged with clients over "twenty years" further solidify the sense of a stable, supportive, and truly family-like setting.
As a full-service pet hospital, Southland Veterinary Hospital offers a comprehensive range of veterinary services designed to support the health and longevity of companion animals. Their offerings cater to the diverse needs of pets at all life stages, from routine preventative care to managing complex chronic conditions. While specific technological details (e.g., digital X-rays, in-house labs) aren't provided in the snippets, a practice with such longevity and positive reviews would inherently provide the essential tools for modern veterinary medicine. Their services typically include:
- General Wellness and Preventative Care: This forms the foundation of their practice. It encompasses routine annual or semi-annual physical examinations, tailored vaccination protocols (e.g., rabies, distemper), and comprehensive parasite control programs (fleas, ticks, heartworm, intestinal parasites). Preventative care is crucial for early disease detection and overall health maintenance.
- Diagnostic Services: To accurately diagnose illnesses and conditions, the hospital would utilize various diagnostic tools. This typically involves blood tests, urinalysis, fecal examinations, and other laboratory tests to assess organ function, detect infections, and identify underlying health issues.
- Medical Treatment for Illnesses: Diagnosis and management of a wide array of medical conditions, including common ailments such as allergies, skin infections, gastrointestinal disturbances, and more complex internal medicine cases affecting various organ systems.
- Surgical Procedures: A general veterinary hospital typically performs routine surgical procedures such as spaying and neutering, soft tissue surgeries (e.g., lump removals, wound repairs), and other common operations, ensuring appropriate pre-surgical assessments and post-operative care.
- Dental Care: Comprehensive dental services are essential for a pet's overall health. This includes professional dental cleanings (often under anesthesia), scaling, polishing, and extractions when necessary, to prevent and treat periodontal disease.
- Nutritional Counseling: Guidance on optimal nutrition for pets at different life stages, addressing specific dietary needs related to weight management, chronic diseases, or allergies.
- Senior Pet Care: Given their long-term client relationships, they would be adept at managing the health needs of aging pets, including conditions like arthritis, hyperthyroidism, and other age-related malaise, with a focus on improving quality of life.
- Pain Management: Implementing strategies for managing both acute and chronic pain, ensuring pets are comfortable whether recovering from injury or surgery, or living with chronic conditions.
- Pharmacy Services: An on-site pharmacy provides convenient access to prescription medications, parasite preventatives, and other essential veterinary products.
Southland Veterinary Hospital is distinguished by several key features that foster strong client loyalty and widespread recommendations:
- Profound Compassion and Empathy: This is the clinic's most outstanding feature. The consistent emphasis on the staff's "love and compassion for animals" and their empathetic approach, even with difficult patients, creates an unparalleled level of trust and comfort for pet owners. This emotional support is invaluable, particularly during challenging health journeys for pets.
- Long-Term Client Relationships: The fact that clients have entrusted their pets to Southland Veterinary Hospital for "over twenty years" speaks volumes about the consistent quality of care and the strong bonds formed. This longevity indicates reliability, trust, and a deep understanding of multi-generational pet families.
- Patient and Understanding Staff: Their ability to handle "a puma with a bad attitude" cat with kindness and patience highlights their exceptional pet-handling skills and commitment to making every visit as stress-free as possible, regardless of the animal's temperament.
- Dedicated and "Amazing" Team: The frequent praise for Dr. Hardigree and staff members like Millie underscores the high caliber of professionals at the hospital who go "the extra mile," ensuring pets receive thorough and loving care.
- Comprehensive Care for All Stages: The hospital is well-equipped to manage pets from their youngest years through their senior life, indicating a holistic approach to veterinary medicine throughout a pet's entire lifespan.
While specific, time-limited promotional offers from Southland Veterinary Hospital are not detailed in the provided information, the intrinsic value of their high-quality, compassionate, and reliable long-term care serves as their primary "promotion." A practice with such a strong reputation for dedication to animal well-being would inherently focus on making necessary care accessible:
- Transparent Communication on Costs: A compassionate practice like Southland Veterinary Hospital would prioritize open and honest discussions about treatment plans and associated costs. They would aim to provide clear explanations, allowing pet owners to make informed decisions about their pet's care based on medical needs and financial considerations.
- Pet Insurance Acceptance: Like most modern veterinary hospitals, Southland Veterinary Hospital would likely accept various pet insurance plans. They would encourage pet owners to consider pet insurance for coverage of unexpected accidents, illnesses, and potentially routine wellness care, depending on the policy.
- Financing Options: For significant veterinary expenses, many reputable clinics partner with third-party financing solutions such as CareCredit. These programs allow pet owners to break down large bills into more manageable monthly payments, which can be crucial during emergencies or for chronic conditions. Clients are encouraged to inquire directly with the hospital about accepted financing options.
- Value in Preventative Care: By offering comprehensive preventative services, the hospital promotes long-term health, which can lead to cost savings in the long run by reducing the incidence of more serious, and thus more expensive, health issues.
In conclusion, Southland Veterinary Hospital stands as a highly recommended and deeply cherished pet hospital in Lexington, KY. Its defining features are the profound compassion and empathy of its entire team, including Dr. Hardigree and staff like Millie, who are dedicated to going the extra mile for every animal. The hospital's ability to build lasting relationships through consistent, patient, and understanding care for pets of all temperaments makes it an invaluable and trusted partner for pet owners seeking the highest standard of veterinary service in the community.

Feb 18, 2025 · Debra DoddThe Southland Vet Clinic staff and Dr. Hardigree have cared for my cats for over twenty years. Their love and compassion for animals is evident in everything they do. One of my cats, who has since passed on, was a wonderfully sweet animal when she was at home, but turned into "a puma with a bad attitude" whenever she visited the vet. Even with her, they were patient, understanding and kind.
May 14, 2018 · Donna SmithHad only been there for annual checkups for my Cat until last week. When my Cat stopped eating and drinking for a few days they got me right in for an examination. Highly knowledgeable, caring and compassionate. Can’t ask for anything more.
Aug 04, 2024 · TomWe credit the compassionate professional partnership of Dr. Millie Hardigree and her caring Staff with helping us provide our gentle dog Hank a loving, high quality of life up to the very moment he passed last month, just 19 days shy of his 13th birthday. Our countless open conversations together, in person and on the phone, helping us to steer his care through changing needs, and the warm space provided to us to talk and ask questions along the way, made that possible. At the end of his life, and throughout those hardest of moments, Dr. Hardigree and Staff extended the very same compassion to us as to Hank, as we began experiencing the grief of his passing. I cannot emphasize enough the positive experience we had over time with Southland Veterinary Hospital, and specifically with Dr. Hardigree and Staff. We are deeply grateful for their expertise and humane care, for their sensitivity to Hank’s needs and experiences, and our own.
Apr 01, 2024 · Vicki StanleyMy cat had a wound on his scruff randomly, then he decided to scratch at it until he bled! The staff at Southland Vet helped him out. My cat would prove to be extra pesky and found new ways to dig at his wound. I was very stressed out because I was being diagnosed with blood cancer and I had to get blood transfusions for myself in order to survive. I had no money to take him back to the vet because despite having a very serious disease, my disability was cancelled. I got a care credit card so I took him in ASAP and they put him in the cutest thunder jacket to prevent him from reaching his wound. They gave him meds and cleaned him up. When it came time to pay the bill, someone had already paid it for me and I still can't figure out who paid it! I can only assume someone with Southland Vet paid it, knowing my situation and knowing I was very scared that I would have to surrender my cat because I wasn't able to afford his care. Whoever paid my bill--I wish there were more people like you in the world because I thought I was going to have to surrender my baby and it was tearing me apart. My cat is happy again, and he's all healed up. The best part is that he loves wearing the thunder jacket and it has eased his anxiety. He was hiding all the time but now he's back on my lap. Thank you.
