South Hill Veterinary Hospital Introduce
South Hill Veterinary Hospital, located at 620 39th Ave SW, Puyallup, WA 98373, USA, serves as a comprehensive "Pet Hospital" dedicated to providing veterinary care for the local community. The hospital can be reached at (253) 848-1503 or via mobile at +1 253-848-1503. This facility aims to offer a broad spectrum of services, from routine wellness to more urgent and specialized care, positioning itself as a key healthcare provider for pets in Puyallup.
The environment at South Hill Veterinary Hospital is designed to facilitate advanced veterinary care, reflecting a commitment to modern medicine. The hospital was established by Dr. Gary P. Larson, who acquired the original practice in 1983 and fulfilled a dream of building the current state-of-the-art facility in 2006. This means the physical space is likely equipped with contemporary technology and designed for efficient patient flow and comfortable surroundings for both pets and their owners. While specific details on decor are not provided, the emphasis on a "state-of-the-art" facility suggests a professional, clean, and well-organized clinical environment. The presence of a team of doctors with varied interests, including Dr. Kate Nikbakhsh with her focus on emergency medicine and surgery, Dr. Melissa Deprez with diagnostic ultrasound, and Dr. "Cindy" Yihsin Chang with internal medicine, implies a robust infrastructure capable of supporting diverse medical needs. The atmosphere strives to be one where pet parents are "put at ease and been kept aware of what our pet's needs were," indicating a focus on clear communication and client comfort.
South Hill Veterinary Hospital provides a comprehensive range of veterinary services, typically expected from a well-equipped "Pet Hospital." These services include:
- **General Wellness & Preventative Care:** This foundational service includes routine physical examinations, individualized vaccination programs tailored to the pet's lifestyle and risk factors, comprehensive parasite prevention and control, and nutritional counseling to promote long-term health.
- **Emergency & Urgent Care:** The hospital is equipped to handle emergency and urgent situations, providing timely care for sudden illnesses or injuries. The presence of veterinarians with strong interests in emergency medicine supports this capability.
- **Advanced Diagnostic Services:** Utilizing modern technology for accurate diagnoses. This typically involves in-house laboratory testing for rapid results (including blood work, urinalysis, and fecal analysis), and advanced imaging techniques such as digital radiography (X-rays). The interest in diagnostic ultrasound among the staff further enhances their ability to non-invasively assess internal organs and conditions.
- **Surgical Procedures:** A wide range of surgical services are offered, from routine elective procedures like spaying and neutering to more complex soft tissue surgeries. Specialization in challenging surgical cases is also noted among the veterinary team.
- **Dental Care:** Comprehensive oral health services are provided, including professional cleanings, extractions, and preventative strategies to maintain a pet's dental hygiene, which is crucial for overall health.
- **Internal Medicine:** Addressing a broad spectrum of conditions affecting internal organ systems, including gastrointestinal, endocrine, respiratory, and urinary issues. The dedicated interest in internal medicine among the staff reinforces the depth of care in this area.
- **Pain Management:** Strategies for managing both acute and chronic pain are developed to ensure pets' comfort and improve their quality of life.
- **Senior Pet Care:** Tailored care plans are offered to address the unique health challenges and age-related conditions of older pets, focusing on comfort and sustained well-being.
- **On-site Pharmacy:** The hospital maintains an on-site pharmacy for convenient access to prescribed medications, although client feedback suggests considerations regarding pricing for prescriptions.
Key features of South Hill Veterinary Hospital, as gleaned from customer reviews and available information, include the consistently good quality of care provided by the medical team. Clients frequently praise the "excellent care" their pets receive and highlight that "Great doctors & staff!" The "vets and techs here have always been very good and helpful," indicating a team that is professional and competent in their medical duties. Pet parents also appreciate being "put at ease and been kept aware of what our pet's needs were," which speaks to effective communication and client education. The hospital's commitment to being a "state-of-the-art" facility underscores its dedication to employing modern veterinary practices and technologies. The collective expertise of the veterinarians, with specialized interests in various fields, suggests a comprehensive approach to diverse pet health needs.
However, it is crucial to present an objective introduction, and one significant area of concern highlighted in customer feedback relates to their "billing methods and prices." A review explicitly states that "If you get a vet appointment within 5 days, they are going to charge you 30% extra for an 'urgent' visit, whether you asked for one or not." This policy, if consistently applied, could be a point of frustration for clients seeking timely care who may not consider their situation an "urgent" emergency but merely a prompt appointment. Furthermore, the review strongly advises against purchasing prescriptions from the hospital, claiming they "charged me literally 10x what the generic costs, $3/pill vs 28cents," and recommending alternatives like Costco or Chewy.com. This feedback suggests that while the medical care itself is highly regarded, the pricing structure for urgent visits and in-house pharmacy products may be a significant consideration for potential clients. This aspect of the business model is a critical piece of information for local users evaluating their options for pet care.
For promotional information, South Hill Veterinary Hospital would likely emphasize its long-standing presence in the Puyallup community, having been a trusted provider since 1983. They would highlight their "state-of-the-art" facility and the comprehensive range of services, including their capabilities in emergency and critical care, as well as the specialized interests of their veterinary team. The positive testimonials regarding the excellent care provided by their "Great doctors & staff" would be a central theme in their outreach. They might also promote their commitment to client education and making pet parents feel at ease. While they might not explicitly advertise their urgent care surcharge or prescription pricing discrepancies, their overall promotional message would likely focus on the high quality of medical care and their experienced team. Pet owners seeking a facility with a deep history, advanced capabilities, and a dedicated team might find South Hill Veterinary Hospital to be a suitable option, while also being mindful of the noted pricing policies for certain services and products.

Feb 24, 2025 · JA SThe vets and techs here have always been very good and helpful. The problem is their billing methods and prices. If you get a vet appointment within 5 days, they are going to charge you 30% extra for an “urgent” visit, whether you asked for one or not. Do NOT buy prescriptions here. Go to Costco or Chewy.com. They charged me literally 10x what the generic costs, $3/pill vs 28cents.
May 08, 2025 · Timothy Pattersonvery caring staff and the doctors are thorough and take their time to explain things. took my 2 angel kitties here to cross the rainbow bridge and the staff were so kind and thoughtful🫶 most recently I took my kitten to get spayed and the whole procedure was perfect, they even called a couple times to follow up and see how she was doing with recovery.
Apr 10, 2025 · hannah nyreenWe have had several pets taken care of by this office over 15 or so years. 3 cats and 2 dogs. They are excellent advocates for your pet's health At SHVH. They may not be the cheapest, though they are competitive. The value of service provided is above and beyond veterinary hospitals I've had to deal with previously. And it's never felt like they're just out for the money. Staff is happy to answer any questions we have about previous appointments, medications, instructions, etc. We went in for out cat's routine annual appointment, but had thought of some questions we had thought about from our dog's visit a couple weeks prior. The Vet took the time to sit with us and give us more information and show us x-rays they took. We really appreciated that and just the level of service in general.
Mar 28, 2025 · Travis ColemanOur family has been using South Hill Vet Hospital for about 17 yrs now, We love them, we just miss Dr Lawrence to pieces, Dr Chang is wonderful and we see her often. Our Big floofy boy saw the groomer Monday July 8th, we love his cut. He is a Great Pyrenees Clumber Spaniel mix, as he's gotten older he has become allergic to himself. He gets hot spots especially in the hotter months, due to his super long thick coat, we can miss the hot spots, so shaving him helps... Kuddos to a job well done!! ( photos are before & after, we took a few lbs of fur iff this guy!)
