Dr. Beth, a 2007 graduate of Iowa State University's College of Veterinary Medicine, grew up in the area and is committed to serving her hometown community. The environment at Slater Animal Hospital is characterized by a friendly, welcoming, and small-town atmosphere. The clinic prides itself on making every visit as relaxing and stress-free as possible for pets and their owners. Reviews consistently highlight the "welcoming and friendly" nature of the entire office staff, suggesting a comfortable and approachable setting. Despite being a smaller town clinic, it offers a comprehensive range of modern veterinary services, indicating a well-equipped facility that prioritizes the health and comfort of its patients. The emphasis on individualized care and creating positive relationships with pets suggests a calm and supportive environment where animals feel at ease, even those who might typically be anxious at the vet. The clinic's location between Des Moines and Ames allows it to serve clients from urban, suburban, and rural areas across Story, Polk, and Boone counties, indicating a broad and diverse client base that appreciates its unique environment and approach to care.

Slater Animal Hospital offers a wide array of veterinary services specifically for dogs and cats, reflecting its transition to primarily small animal care. Their focus is on providing comprehensive care throughout a pet's life, from puppy and kitten care to senior pet wellness. Key services include:

  • Wellness & Prevention: This is a foundational aspect of their care, including routine vaccinations tailored to a pet's lifestyle, micro-chipping for identification, and essential dental care to maintain oral health. They also provide guidance on preventing common diseases like canine influenza.
  • Parasite Prevention: Comprehensive strategies for controlling and preventing fleas, ticks, heartworm, and other internal parasites. They also offer deworming for puppies and kittens.
  • Diagnostic Services: The clinic is equipped with diagnostic capabilities to accurately identify health issues. This includes in-house laboratory services for quick test results and general X-ray (digital radiography) to examine a pet's internal body systems.
  • Surgery & Related Services: Slater Animal Hospital performs various surgical procedures. While specific types are not fully detailed, as a full-service clinic, they handle common necessary operations.
  • Laser Therapy: This advanced treatment modality is offered, providing pain relief and promoting faster healing for various conditions.
  • Prescription Diets: They provide and recommend prescription diets tailored to specific health needs of pets, aiding in the management of medical conditions.
  • Medical Management of Conditions: They offer care for a variety of pet medical conditions, including arthritis, cancer, diabetes (canine and feline), and distemper (canine and feline), among others.
  • Pet Education: The hospital provides valuable educational resources, including videos on topics like brushing teeth, caring for senior pets, obesity, and the importance of wellness exams and first puppy visits. They also provide information on medical conditions and how to spot symptoms.

A significant feature of Slater Animal Hospital, as consistently highlighted by satisfied customers, is its excellent veterinary care and the compassionate nature of its staff. Dr. Patty (likely referring to Dr. Beth Wilkinson) is specifically praised for being "so wonderful with our dog" and for her gentle approach. Clients often express that the quality of care provided is superior, even when compared to veterinarians in larger neighboring cities like Ames, and is "easily worth the drive." This speaks to a strong emphasis on personalized, high-quality attention given to each pet. The clinic operates on an appointment-based schedule to ensure optimal quality care for each patient, reinforcing their commitment to individual attention rather than rushed visits. Their commitment to client education, offering tailored vaccination protocols and providing resources on various pet health topics, also sets them apart.

For promotional information, Slater Animal Hospital leverages its reputation for high-quality, personalized care and competitive value. Testimonials from genuinely satisfied customers are a significant promotional asset, particularly those that compare their service favorably to other, potentially more expensive, options in nearby larger cities. While explicit marketing campaigns are not extensively detailed, their website outlines their services, introduces their team, and provides payment options, including Cash, Personal Checks, Mastercard, Visa, American Express, Discover, Apple Pay, and Android Pay. Importantly, they also accept CareCredit, a credit card for medical expenses, which helps clients manage larger unexpected costs. They do not accept direct payment plans but facilitate access to financing. They also partner with MyVetStore for online ordering of prescriptions and pet food, adding convenience for clients. They advise on pet insurance and wellness plans as ways to save money on veterinary care. Their operating hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, though they do not offer emergency services but can stabilize pets and provide referrals to nearby 24/7 emergency clinics like Iowa State University, BluePearl, and Iowa Veterinary Specialties. This transparency about their capabilities and limitations further builds trust with clients.

In conclusion, Slater Animal Hospital presents itself as a highly commendable Pet Hospital in Slater, IA. Its long-standing presence, coupled with the dedicated and compassionate leadership of Dr. Beth Wilkinson and her welcoming team, ensures that pets receive excellent and personalized care. The clinic's comprehensive range of services, commitment to client education, and transparent approach to managing veterinary expenses make it a trusted and valued resource for pet owners seeking quality care in a friendly, community-focused environment.

Staff was extremely knowledgeable and easy to talk to. They listened to our concerns for our new puppy and had many suggestions for us to try. I could tell they really care about the animals they are treating. And the price was less than my husband and I thought it would be. An all around great experience at a great facility. Highly recommended!
