Services

Pownal Veterinary Hospital provides a comprehensive suite of veterinary services for various types of pets, primarily dogs and cats, with specific veterinarians also caring for rabbits and "pocket pets" (small mammals like ferrets, guinea pigs, etc.). Their service offerings include:

  • Comprehensive Physical Exams: Regular wellness check-ups are foundational to preventive care, allowing veterinarians to assess overall health, detect potential issues early, and provide tailored recommendations.
  • Vaccinations: Essential for protecting pets against common and potentially deadly diseases like rabies and parvovirus. They offer customized vaccination protocols based on a pet's lifestyle and risk factors.
  • Diagnostics: The hospital is equipped with in-house and outside laboratory services, enabling quick and accurate blood work, urinalysis, and other tests. They also offer Digital Radiology (X-rays) to diagnose internal issues.
  • Dental Care: Comprehensive dental assessment and treatment are provided, crucial for preventing dental disease and maintaining overall health, as oral health impacts systemic well-being.
  • General Surgery: They perform various surgical procedures, although specific types of surgeries may require confirmation by calling the hospital. This includes common soft tissue surgeries and other necessary interventions.
  • Behavior Counseling: Addressing behavioral issues is an important aspect of pet well-being, and PVH offers counseling to help manage and improve pet behavior.
  • Nutritional Counseling: Proper nutrition is vital for a pet's health at all life stages. They provide guidance on appropriate diets, including prescription and retail diets.
  • In-House and Online Pharmacy: This dual option provides convenience for clients to obtain necessary medications and products, either directly from the hospital or through their partnered online pharmacy, Vets First Choice. This ensures access to prescription foods, flea, tick, and heartworm preventatives, and other essential supplies.
  • Flea, Tick, and Heartworm Preventatives: Offering a range of products and advice to protect pets from common parasites.
  • Humane Euthanasia and End-of-Life Care: Recognizing the difficulty of saying goodbye, they provide compassionate support and options for end-of-life care, including humane euthanasia, to ensure comfort and dignity. The emphasis is on respect and understanding during this sensitive time. They also offer house call services, which can be particularly beneficial for end-of-life care, allowing pets to pass peacefully in their familiar home environment.
  • Emergency & Urgent Care: While they operate during specific hours, Pownal Veterinary Hospital accepts emergencies anytime the clinic is open. They advise calling immediately before arrival so staff can prepare and provide initial guidance. For non-life-threatening urgent conditions, they strive to fit pets in between scheduled appointments.

The entire staff is friendly and helpful. A big thank you to Karen and Anne who helped me through caring for our 13 year old dog with cancer. They were very caring and made sure that our final wishes for Hunter were met.

This is a very good veterinary hospital. The tech and vet was great with my dog, who isn't on her best behavior with vets. They tool their time talking through my portions on medications. I left feeling that my dog received good treatment, despite her objections, and I'm happy with the staff.
