Polk Veterinary Clinic

My dog had a "cherry eye." I took her to the folks at Polk Veterinary Clinic and after exploring other (non-surgical) options, we decided to have the eye fixed with surgery. I turned out great. This is her "after" photo and she's back to her normal happy self. Fantastic staff and great care.

Dr. Brotherton and her team are wonderful. My dog, Geppetto, is very difficult. To say he's terrified of vet appointments is an understatement. He came to me at three years of age so I have no idea what happened to make him so fearful. Dr. Brotherton has gone out of her way to make it work for my dog and me and I am beyond thankful. Previous vets did a lot of shaming and blaming but not the case at all with Polk Vet Clinic. I recommend this clinic, Dr. Botherton and her staff highly.

My female dog was spayed a couple weeks ago - when I was sent home with the after care instructions, I was only given 3 sentences of information. Nothing about licking, an E-collar, & what to-do incase if that occurred. After a few days I noticed she started to develop redness and leaking red-tinted fluid from the incision area. When I saw her licking I would tell her to stop and kept as close of an eye on her as I could to make sure she wasn’t, but she still continued to develop redness and signs of infection. So I called to let the clinic know that this was occurring, and the first thing I was told to do was get an E-collar immediately. Granted, this was the first time I’ve ever taken a dog to have surgery and I had never heard of an E-collar before. After I was informed what this was, I was confused as to why this wasn’t a precautionary measure they let you know about before you take your dog home after surgery. I think anyone who has a dog knows that they lick anything on their body that’s bugging them (rashes, allergies, cuts, etc.) I was then told to bring her in to have her examined, so I did a couple of days later at their earliest convenience. At the appointment, I decided let the vet know my concerns about not being sent home with more than 3 sentences of after care instructions, and I felt this infection could’ve been very easily preventable if I was given the proper information. Before the appointment, I google searched “Aftercare instructions for dog spay”, and each link I clicked on (4 of them) mentioned an E-collar to prevent licking, and therefore prevent an unnecessary infection. I let the vet know this, and said I felt I wasn’t given proper aftercare instructions. She then proceeded to be combative, not validating anything I said, and coming up with multiple excuses. She said they don’t suggest these collars to clients because they’ve been denied in the past (you should still suggest them anyway despite that fact), and they are very “verbal” at this clinic - in terms of informing patients about aftercare instructions in general. I expressed to her that I think having take home instructions is important because people can forget things they’re breifly told, also I have a 2 year old with me and sometimes it’s hard to pay attention to what people are saying when you’re trying to wrangle a young child. Despite that, detailed take home instructions after any surgery whether you’re animal or human should be mandatory. She then proceeded to dismiss anything I said, and she also stated that I am the first client in 20 years at the clinic that has ever expressed concerns about the lack of information on aftercare instructions - which I find that very hard to believe. (I will attach a photo of what I was sent home with for reference). I then mentioned, since I felt this was a very easily preventable infection if I had been given the proper information, and this appointment wouldn’t had been necessary because I would’ve taken the precautionary action - that I shouldn’t have to pay for her antibiotics and E-collar. She told me, “Actually I can no charge, and then you can not come back again.” Then shortly after, she proceeded to walk out of the room while I was in the middle of talking. I was very respectful the entire conversation just expressing my concerns, never talked aggressively, never raised my voice or anything. I was shocked to say the least when she walked out mid-conversation. It’s very out of my character to speak out, but I felt this was something important to express so I did my best. But I will add, the vet tech that was in the room during the conversation was very nice after the vet walked out on me, and she talked with me and was very understanding and validated where I was coming from. It was refreshing to have a productive conversation after what I had just experienced a few seconds prior. To say the least, I will not be returning to Polk Vet. I hope they will go forward with being more detailed and informative to future clients to prevent something like this from happening again.

I got my cat spayed here back in January and I have another appointment set up for a different cat. It's never easy to bring them in because they're scared & don't know what's going on but my first visit went about as well as one could hope for. The operation went well and I hope the same for my other feline. I'll continue using Polk Vet for the foreseeable future. 4/5!!
