After a pretty bad experience with our last vet, my reactive dog and I were both left unsure of who to trust next. But from the moment we walked into Open Door, everything felt different—in the best way possible. It felt strange to be so “easy”. The staff got right down on the floor to play with my dog, meeting her where she was and taking the time to make her feel safe. It honestly made my heart smile. Their compassion, patience, and understanding were next-level. I left feeling emotional in the best way—like we had finally found our people. To top it off, their pricing is a fraction of what we were paying before. I truly can’t say enough good things. We’ve absolutely found our new vet, and I’m so grateful. 10/10 recommend 💕

Open Door Veterinary Care Introduce

Located at 1419 Patton Ave, Asheville, NC 28806, USA, Open Door Veterinary Care stands as a beacon of compassionate and accessible pet healthcare in the Asheville community. As a dedicated Pet Hospital, their mission is to provide quality veterinary care that is both comprehensive and affordable, ensuring that more pets can receive the attention they need to thrive. They offer a full spectrum of services for dogs and cats, from routine preventative measures to advanced medical and surgical treatments, all delivered with a profound commitment to patient comfort and client satisfaction.

The core values of Open Door Veterinary Care are vividly reflected in the enthusiastic testimonials of their clients. One client, previously wary after a negative experience, shared a heartwarming account: "After a pretty bad experience with our last vet, my reactive dog and I were both left unsure of who to trust next. 10/10 recommend 💕" This powerful endorsement highlights the clinic's exceptional ability to create a calming and positive experience, even for pets with behavioral challenges. Another grateful owner praised their help during a financial tight spot: "Our cat Sabatien was bitten by something and really needed the attention. With money being tight we were in hopes that we would find a place that could accommodate our pockets. Got in contact with habitat and they appointed us to some places, but after review and looking at the options this place stood out a little more. So we take him here to get looked at and the staff was just awesome. This was my first time going into a vet hospital as well as his so we both were a little nervous and at the end we came out with smiles. Thank you so much for taking care of our baby and giving him the care he needed. He is eating and back to himself after the care. 😊❤️✌️🙏🏼" These reviews underscore Open Door Veterinary Care's commitment to both compassionate animal care and financial accessibility, making a real difference in the lives of pets and their families.

Environment and Atmosphere

While detailed descriptions of the physical environment are not extensively published, the customer reviews provide compelling insight into the atmosphere at Open Door Veterinary Care. The repeated mentions of staff members getting "right down on the floor to play with my dog" and making a "nervous" first-time pet visitor feel comfortable suggest a welcoming, patient, and stress-reducing environment. This implies that the clinic prioritizes creating a calm and reassuring space where animals, especially those with anxieties, can feel safe. The emphasis on "compassion, patience, and understanding" points to an environment where both pets and their owners feel heard and respected. It's clear that the staff go above and beyond to tailor their approach to each individual animal's needs, which is a hallmark of a truly pet-friendly hospital. The notion of the experience feeling "easy" for a reactive dog, and owners leaving with "smiles," speaks volumes about the positive, low-stress atmosphere they cultivate.

They offer various wellness packages, such as the Canine Preferred Package, which bundles exams, vaccines, and essential wellness screenings for comprehensive preventative care.
  • Testing & Diagnostics: The clinic is equipped with an in-house lab for immediate results and also utilizes outsourcing for more specialized diagnostics. Services include digital general and dental X-rays, allowing for thorough examination of internal structures and oral health. Various blood tests, heartworm tests, and fecal tests are also available for early detection of health issues.
  • General Surgery: They perform common surgical procedures, including spay and neuter surgeries. Their surgical protocols prioritize pet safety, with options that include anesthesia, IV catheter and fluids, pain medication, and Elizabethan collars to aid recovery.
  • Dental Care: Recognizing the importance of oral health, Open Door Veterinary Care offers comprehensive dental care, including cleaning, polishing, root canals, extractions, and periodontal deep cleaning. Digital dental X-rays are used to provide a thorough examination of teeth and gum lines.
  • Urgent Care: While not a 24/7 emergency clinic, they are equipped to handle urgent medical needs during their business hours (Monday-Friday: 8 am-6 pm), providing prompt attention for acute conditions. For after-hours emergencies, they can likely provide referrals to emergency veterinary facilities in Asheville.
  • Pharmacy Services: They offer an in-house pharmacy for immediate medication needs and also provide an online pharmacy option, allowing clients to conveniently order prescription foods and medications. For prescription refills, a valid client-patient-veterinary relationship and a recent exam (within the past year) are required.
  • Microchipping: To ensure lost pets can be reunited with their owners, microchipping services with lifetime registration are available.
  • Nutritional Counseling & Behavior Recommendations: Beyond medical treatments, they provide guidance on appropriate pet nutrition and address behavioral concerns.
  • Pain Management & Skin Management: Specialized care for chronic pain and dermatological issues is also part of their service offering.
  • End-of-Life Care: They offer compassionate options for end-of-life care, including euthanasia, supporting pet owners through difficult decisions.
Features and Distinctive Qualities

Open Door Veterinary Care distinguishes itself through several key features that resonate deeply with pet owners in Asheville:

  • Affordable and Transparent Pricing: One of the most frequently praised aspects is their "fraction of what we were paying before" pricing. This commitment to accessibility is a significant draw, especially for pet owners facing financial constraints, as highlighted by the cat owner whose pet needed urgent care. They openly list prices for many services on their website, providing clarity and helping clients budget for their pet's care.
  • Exceptional Compassion and Patient-Centered Approach: The reviews consistently emphasize the staff's "compassion, patience, and understanding." The willingness to engage with anxious or reactive pets on their level, literally getting down on the floor to play, showcases a truly patient-centered approach that prioritizes comfort and trust.
  • Experienced and Caring Staff: The collective praise for "freaking incredible" vets and "awesome" staff points to a highly skilled and empathetic team dedicated to providing top-tier care.
  • "Stay Together Fund": Open Door Veterinary Care demonstrates a unique commitment to the community through its "Stay Together Fund." A portion of their revenue is donated to this fund, which aims to prevent pets from being surrendered to shelters or euthanized due to unexpected veterinary costs. This initiative provides financial assistance to clients who might otherwise struggle to afford necessary care, solidifying their mission of accessible veterinary medicine.
  • Convenient Online Services: The availability of online booking and an online pharmacy streamlines the client experience, making it easier to schedule appointments and manage prescriptions.
Promotional Information and Savings

Open Door Veterinary Care makes concerted efforts to ensure their services remain affordable and offers various ways for clients to manage pet care costs:

  • Reasonable Rates: Their pricing structure is inherently designed to be more reasonable than many other clinics, making quality care more accessible as a standard practice, not just a promotion.
  • Wellness Packages: By offering bundled packages for routine care, such as the Basic Canine Package and Canine Preferred Package, they help clients save money on essential preventative services compared to purchasing each item individually.
  • Payment Options: Open Door Veterinary Care partners with treatment financing solutions like CareCredit and Scratchpay. These programs allow pet owners to break down large veterinary bills into manageable monthly payments, easing the financial burden of unexpected or extensive treatments.
  • Pet Insurance Acceptance: Like many veterinary clinics, they accept pet insurance. They actively advise clients on how pet insurance can help reimburse up to 90% of unexpected vet costs, encouraging owners to secure coverage for their pets while they are healthy.
  • Online Pharmacy Discounts: The online pharmacy often features special promotions and the convenience of AutoShip discounts on food and medications, allowing for long-term savings.
  • Stay Together Fund: While not a direct discount to all clients, the existence of this fund and the clinic's contribution to it reflect a broader commitment to financial accessibility for those in need, which benefits the community as a whole.

Open Door Veterinary Care in Asheville is highly recommended for pet owners seeking a veterinary hospital that combines professional medical expertise with profound compassion and an accessible approach to pricing. Their dedication to the well-being of both pets and their human families makes them a standout choice in the community. I've been going to Open Door since I moved to the Asheville area several years ago. They have always taken amazing care of my fur babies and are very patient and loving with my semi-feral. I love how they get on the floor and meet each cat at their level. And the prices aren't too bad either. ❤️

I went in strictly to confirm if my dog (Siberian husky) was pregnant. My girl has a fenced in area to go out and potty- the neighbors dog (German shepherd) jumped the fence and bred her while I took my son to school. Instead of just confirming the pregnancy, Dr. Schneider scolded me for 30 min saying they would be mutts, the humane society hates to see people like me coming, the world doesn’t need more unwanted puppies, and I need to get her fixed. I never said I was taking them to the humane society or they would be unwanted, I didn’t get a chance to say anything, she just assumed. She felt her stomach and said she didn’t feel anything, and she’s pretty good at confirming if they’re pregnant. It’s been 3 weeks and today she’s going into labor 😐 thanks for nothing but shaming me. I will not be going back. Side note, Dr. Nehlig whom I seen previously was so sweet.
