The staff is extremely friendly and helpful. Dr. McCabe rocks. She was very good conveying her thought processes in making a on Earl. She spent a lot of time in the examination room with us and was upfront about the costs of possible treatments without trying to steer me towards the more expensive options or sell me services like the corporate veterinary practices tend to do. The vet techs, Brandon and Nicole, were awesome as well. I really can’t say enough good things about my first visit to NCVS. Thanks guys! Earl says “meow”

This underlines the clinic's ability to provide empathetic support during challenging times, ensuring both pets and their owners feel cared for and comfortable. The emphasis on spending ample time in the examination room, listening to concerns, and explaining treatment options reflects a truly client-focused approach, ensuring that pet owners feel heard and respected.
Norfolk County Veterinary Service is equipped to provide a wide array of veterinary services, encompassing both preventive care and advanced medical and surgical treatments. Their commitment to staying on the "cutting edge" of modern veterinary care suggests a dedication to offering contemporary diagnostic and treatment options. The services typically include:
- General Wellness and Preventive Care: This includes thorough annual and six-month check-ups, tailored vaccination protocols based on a pet's lifestyle and risk factors, comprehensive parasite prevention (including heartworm, fleas, ticks, and intestinal parasites), and nutritional counseling. They emphasize that preventative care is the "best means to protect your pet's wellbeing" and to "keep the cost of care as low as possible."
- Sick Pet Examinations and Treatment: For pets experiencing illness or injury, NCVS offers diagnostic evaluations for symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, coughing, sneezing, lethargy, or changes in appetite. They aim to provide rapid diagnosis and immediate treatment plans.
- In-House Laboratory: A significant feature, their complete in-house lab allows for rapid diagnosis through on-site blood testing, urinalysis, cytology (microscope for cell analysis), and parasite detection. This capability speeds up the diagnostic process, leading to quicker treatment.
- Advanced Diagnostic Imaging: The clinic utilizes digital radiography (X-rays) for detailed skeletal and internal organ imaging, and ultrasonography for non-invasive, real-time visualization of internal organs, aiding in the diagnosis of complex conditions.
- Comprehensive Dental Care: Recognizing the importance of oral health, services include dental examinations, professional scaling and polishing (under anesthesia), and extractions of diseased teeth, helping to prevent systemic health issues originating from dental problems.
- Surgical Services: NCVS is a full-service hospital capable of performing various surgical procedures. Beyond routine spay and neuter surgeries, they also perform many types of soft tissue surgeries, such as tumor removals, foreign body removals, bladder stone removals, abscess surgeries, and more. They adhere to national standards for surgical and anesthetic protocols, emphasizing safety.
- Intensive Care Unit (ICU) Facility with Oxygen Chamber: This indicates their capacity to provide advanced medical care and monitoring for critically ill or injured pets, offering vital support for conditions requiring specialized attention.
- Puppy and Kitten Care: Dedicated programs for young pets, including initial check-ups, deworming, vaccinations, and behavioral consultations to help integrate them happily into the family.
- Senior Pet Care: Specialized care for aging pets, focusing on managing common age-related conditions like arthritis, organ dysfunction (e.g., kidney, thyroid), and cognitive decline, with a focus on improving their quality of life.
- Dermatology: Diagnosis and treatment of various skin conditions, allergies, and ear problems, which are common concerns for pet owners.
- Care for Rabbits and Other Small Furry Species: A notable feature, as mentioned in testimonials, is their expertise in caring for less common companion animals like rabbits, providing comprehensive care for these unique pets.
- Pharmacy Refills: Facilitating convenient access to necessary medications and prescription foods for ongoing pet health management.
Norfolk County Veterinary Service stands out due to several key features that resonate strongly with its clientele:
- Independent/Non-Corporate Practice: A significant highlight from customer reviews is the perception that NCVS operates differently from larger "corporate veterinary practices," specifically noting that they don't "steer towards more expensive options or sell services." This suggests a patient-first approach where medical necessity and client education guide treatment decisions, rather than sales targets.
- Experienced and Dedicated Team: The consistent praise for Dr. McCabe, Dr. Poor, and the vet techs (Brandon and Nicole) underscores the quality of the staff. Their knowledge, empathy, and ability to communicate complex medical information clearly are highly valued by pet owners.
- Client-Centered Care: The practice’s philosophy is deeply rooted in personalized attention. They are noted for spending significant time with clients in the examination room, listening attentively to concerns, and openly discussing thought processes behind diagnoses and treatment plans. This fosters strong, trusting relationships.
- Advanced Equipment and Facilities: Despite its personalized approach, NCVS is well-equipped with modern diagnostic tools like digital radiography, ultrasonography, and an in-house lab, ensuring accurate and timely diagnoses. The presence of an ICU facility with an oxygen chamber further demonstrates their capability for intensive care.
- Focus on Preventive Care: NCVS actively promotes preventive medicine as the most effective and cost-efficient way to ensure long-term pet health, empowering owners with the knowledge to make informed decisions.
- Specialization in Diverse Species: The willingness and expertise to care for rabbits and other small furry species expands their reach and value to a broader segment of pet owners in the community.
The practice has been operating for "more than 35 years," indicating a long-standing commitment to the community and a deep-rooted history of providing consistent quality care. Their self-description of striving to create a "veterinary hospital that we are proud to bring our own pets to" speaks to their high standards and genuine care.
While specific flash promotions or membership programs are not prominently advertised for Norfolk County Veterinary Service, their primary "promotional" strength lies in their strong reputation for quality care and client satisfaction. Word-of-mouth referrals, as evidenced by glowing customer testimonials, are likely a significant driver of new clientele. The emphasis on transparency regarding costs, without pushing unnecessary services, also serves as a strong point of trust and attraction for pet owners who appreciate straightforward communication.
Based on common practices for veterinary hospitals, NCVS would typically offer:
- Acceptance of Pet Insurance: They would work with various pet insurance providers, assisting clients with claims to help manage costs for unexpected illnesses or accidents.
- Payment Options: Like many veterinary facilities, they likely accept major credit cards. Additionally, they are listed as accepting CareCredit, a popular financing option that allows pet owners to pay for veterinary services through low-interest or interest-free payment plans, making more extensive treatments financially accessible.
- Online Resources: Although not explicitly detailed in the provided snippets, a modern veterinary practice often provides online resources such as patient forms for convenient completion before visits and informational articles on pet health topics, which contribute to a smoother client experience.
- Client Education: Their stated goal of "sharing our medical knowledge so you can provide the best possible home for your pet" is a form of ongoing client support and engagement, building loyalty and promoting responsible pet ownership.
The testimonials themselves act as powerful endorsements, showcasing the genuine positive experiences of real customers. "I really can’t say enough good things about my first visit to NCVS. Thanks guys! Earl says 'meow'" perfectly encapsulates the satisfaction derived from their patient-focused, transparent, and compassionate approach to veterinary medicine. Their reputation for being caring, knowledgeable, and honest likely attracts new clients who seek a trustworthy partner in their pet's health journey.

Apr 01, 2025 · Barry KeleherI cannot say enough positive things about this office. The entire staff is wonderful. They helped my cat through a difficult time and they were fantastic. Please take your animals here!
Feb 16, 2025 · Bridgette ClintonDr. McCabe and vet tech, Haley, provided incredible end-of-life service care for my sweet cat, Simon. I was one of the last appointments before they were closing on a Thursday evening. I will never forget Dr. McGabe’s (along with the rest of the staff’s) patience, kindness and understanding with the time it took for me to make such a difficult decision to put my cat to sleep. Despite it being late and after work hours, Dr. McCabe and staff reassured me that I should take my time and not rush the final decision or moments I had left with Simon. Dr. McCabe and Haley’s compassion really touched my heart and I am so thankful they were both there as a team for my boy. It’s obvious they are incredible at what they do. I’ll miss Simon so much, but am glad I brought him to Norfolk County for all his care.
Jan 06, 2025 · K FoyeWe've been bringing our Guinea pigs and chinchillas to Norfolk Animal Hospital for several years now, and we have had consistently positive experiences. The staff here is truly great! We have had the pleasure of working with both Dr. Tami and Dr. Richard on multiple occasions, and they have always been wonderful. Recently, we had to make the difficult decision to put down one of our beloved pets. It was a heart-wrenching time for us, but we are immensely thankful for the compassion and care that Dr. Tami showed towards our sweet baby girl during this tough time. They made the process as comforting as possible for us, and we genuinely appreciate their understanding and support. It's never easy to say goodbye to a cherished pet, but having a veterinary team that genuinely cares about animals and their owners makes all the difference. We highly recommend Norfolk Animal Hospital for their exceptional care and empathy.
Jul 27, 2023 · Tyler BenjaminGreat vets office, they take very good care of my kitties. When one of my boys had to go in for an echo on his heart - they said he was so well behaved (and I’m sure they made him comfortable to feel this way) that they didn’t even have to sedate him! Saved me so much money and kitty didn’t need to be sleepy that was amazing! The receptionists are also so patient and kind, answering all of my insane questions about my cats. Shout out to the receptionists for putting up with all of my phone calls!! They are truly the best!!
