The care from the veterinarians are absolutely wonderful however office staff and the vets do not communicate together at all often leading to billing issues, medical issues, and scheduling issues The vets once again are absolutely wonderful. The front desk is absolutely kind, but the lack of communication between the two of them really leaves something to be desired.

Environment

The New England Equine Medical & Surgical Center is housed in a modern, state-of-the-art 34,000 to 35,000 square-foot facility, which is designed to ensure that both patients and their owners receive the highest standard of compassion, care, and competency. The expansive hospital includes two full surgical suites, multiple medical exam rooms, a dedicated neonatal intensive care unit for foals, and a digital radiography suite. Furthermore, it boasts a full-service laboratory, a large general exam and main treatment room, and dedicated medicine and surgery barns with stall space for hospitalized horses, including ICU care. The facility's design reflects a deep understanding of equine needs, aiming to minimize stress during examinations, treatments, and recovery. The overall environment, enhanced by a caring support staff, aims to provide a reassuring and professional setting for specialized equine veterinary services.

Services

As a specialized "Pet Hospital" for equines, New England Equine Medical & Surgical Center offers a comprehensive suite of advanced veterinary services. Their specialized experience covers a wide range of disciplines, making them a one-stop destination for complex equine health needs:

  • Surgery: NEEMSC provides both emergency and elective surgical services. This includes a full range of surgical interventions such as colic surgery (a common emergency, with approximately 85-90 surgical cases out of 300 annually), minimally invasive laparoscopy and arthroscopy, neurectomy, laser surgery of the upper airway, fracture and wound repair, castrations, and Caesarean sections.
  • Internal Medicine: A critical component of their practice, the internal medicine service handles a wide variety of conditions. This includes evaluation of horses with gastrointestinal diseases (like colic), respiratory problems, equine endocrinology and metabolic disorders, and liver, kidney, and neurologic diseases. They also maintain a dedicated isolation facility for contagious infectious disease cases and a specialized neonatology unit for critically ill foals.
  • Lameness and Sports Medicine: This department focuses on diagnosing and treating musculoskeletal issues that affect equine performance. Services include comprehensive lameness evaluations, advanced diagnostics, and various therapeutic options, including physical therapy.
  • Diagnostic Imaging: NEEMSC boasts cutting-edge diagnostic imaging capabilities. This includes digital radiography, ultrasonography (of the thorax and abdomen), respiratory and urinary endoscopy, gastroscopy, and advanced imaging modalities such as Nuclear Scintigraphy, Computed Tomography (CT), and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). They are one of only a few facilities in New England to house an MRI unit.
  • Ophthalmology: Specialized care for equine eye conditions, addressing a range of ocular diseases and injuries.
  • Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation: Offering therapies to aid in recovery from injuries, enhance mobility, and improve overall physical well-being.
  • Ambulatory Field Services: In addition to their 24/7 hospital services, NEEMSC provides farm call services to clients in New Hampshire, Southern Maine, and Northeastern Massachusetts, bringing veterinary care directly to the horses' stable environment. Their trucks are equipped with portable digital radiography, ultrasound, shockwave therapy, gastroscopy, and upper airway endoscopy.
  • Emergency and Critical Care: The hospital is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for equine emergencies. They also manage intensive-care treatment for post-operative colic cases and weak, ill newborn foals.
  • Reproductive Services: NEEMSC offers comprehensive reproductive services, including breeding soundness examinations, mare and stallion management, artificial insemination, embryo transfer, and neonatal foal care. They also provide breeding shed services.
  • Consulting Services: They offer the services of acupuncturists, farriers, clinical pathologists, a cardiologist, and radiologists on a consultant basis, ensuring a multidisciplinary approach to complex cases.
  • Online Pharmacy: For client convenience, NEEMSC partners with Covetrus Pharmacy, offering a wide range of medications, supplements, and barn supplies through an online storefront.
Features

New England Equine Medical & Surgical Center stands out due to several distinctive features that make it a premier choice for equine veterinary care:

  • Specialized Equine Focus: Unlike general "Pet Hospitals," NEEMSC is exclusively dedicated to horses. This specialization means their entire facility, equipment, and staff expertise are tailored to the unique physiological and medical needs of equines, leading to a higher level of nuanced care.
  • Top-Notch Specialists and Resources: Clients consistently highlight the presence of "top notch doctors and staff" with "every resource at their fingertips." The team comprises eight equine veterinarians with varied specialties, along with a highly experienced technical and barn staff (cumulative experience of over 80 years).
  • Advanced Diagnostic and Treatment Capabilities: The in-house CT scan, MRI, and two full surgical suites, alongside comprehensive internal medicine and lameness services, position NEEMSC at the forefront of equine diagnostics and treatment in the region.
  • 24/7 Emergency and Referral Hospital: Their round-the-clock emergency services and status as a private referral hospital make them an essential resource for complex and critical equine cases, serving both direct clients and referring veterinarians throughout New England.
  • Compassionate Care and Client Support: Despite the highly specialized and advanced nature of their services, the clinic maintains a strong emphasis on "compassionate care." They strive to provide respectful care to patients and professional guidance to clients, making stressful situations (like complex surgeries or dealing with a baby foal) easier for owners.
  • Strong Referral Network: NEEMSC works closely with many referring veterinarians in the region, ensuring seamless continuity of care for horses requiring specialized attention.
  • Commitment to Education and Training: The clinic also offers an intensive internship program, providing comprehensive training in equine medicine, surgery, and emergency care, contributing to the future of equine veterinary medicine.

While the veterinary care itself is consistently lauded, one review points out a communication gap between the veterinarians and the office staff, which can lead to "billing issues, medical issues, and scheduling issues." However, the same review emphasizes the kindness of the front desk and the wonderful nature of the vets, indicating that the core medical and empathetic care is exceptional, with potential for improvement in internal communication flow.

New England has been absolutely fantastic to work with. I sent my mature stallion in for a castration while I was out of state and Shannon made sure I knew how everything was going so I was worry free! I would absolutely recommend if you are looking for a team of experienced professionals to care for your equines!

Such an odd perspective from another reviewer ~ we have always had such professional experiences with NEE ! For over 11 years they have provided excellent care to our horses. From on farm calls to in hospital treatment, they have a wide range of abilities (IV medication, Ultrasound, Endoscopy etc). Dr Raynor made us feel like we were her only call of the day, taking all the time the horse needed (even though she had lots of other patients to see) and surprisingly took time to respond to owners who would ask her to “just check” their horse “while she was there”. Discussions about testing and cost were informative, science based and collaborative. We have seen several vet techs with them over the years, they were always professional, competent and kind to the horses. i have seen them manage difficult horses with skill. Office staff have been easy to communicate with. We are so lucky to have an equine vet with surgical skill so close at hand. Of course, there are always two sides to every horse story, too bad medical professionals can’t share theirs with the public. Thanks NEE ! Happy you are in the “neigh”borhood !!!

We took my appy Spud down for ongoing foot problems. He just kept getting abscesses. He has been nerved and there has just been no real soundness. We resorted to glue on shoes because of white line that was destroying his hoof wall. They took additional films, reviewed all of his prior records and it was determined that he has pedal osteitis. A farrier put klogg shoes on and doxy was prescribed. He is comfortable, and although I know we have a long road ahead of us, I know we'll get there. He is going back down in May for another set of shoes and xrays. To think this all started with a stick going up through his coffin bone in 2018. Thank you Dr Davis and your team for making my boy feel better.
