I had to go back in for another appointment because my Crested Gecko's toe didn't heal on its own after being told to just use A&D ointment. He was then prescribed an antibiotic and I was told to have another recheck for yet another $30 after 13 days. Other veterinary offices provide rechecks for free, So I asked about that and they told me that $30 was the cheapest recheck fee in Utah, but that's obviously not true because free is the cheapest. They were very firm on the fee and because my geckos toe healed and there were no more issues, I discuss with them and ask if I could send them photos on day 13 instead of going in for the recheck because I don't want to pay the fee after having already paid for the initial exam which was $85 and then the other recheck which was another $30, I wasn't going to then spend another $30 just to be told he is good. They told me that they advised against that but can't make me go in obviously. I told them I will send them photos on day 13 so that they can see the progress and let me know how things look. I canceled the recheck. Before I canceled, they were super quick to respond when I had an appointment and when I was going to be paying them. The second I canceled the recheck, they did not care to respond to my images that I sent them of his toe and that proved to me that they don't care. They only "care" about the money... The second you take the money away, they could care less about you. It's very sad. I will be going elsewhere from now on because I do not appreciate being treated this way... Good veterinarians should care about the animals whether they are getting paid or not. I own my own small business as well, And I still care about all of my customers whether I am getting paid or not. Either way, I will still help them. As things should be. Update: I then received a voicemail that was borderline disrespectful and felt very attacking towards me simply wanting good and genuine care for my pets. Reading some of the other negative reviews, I should've just avoided and gone elsewhere, but decided to try them out despite the negative reviews. I am understanding the other negative reviews now as I also feel very attacked. Definitely will not be returning here as I do not deserve to be treated or talked to in that "looked down on" way. Just as a warning and fair advice - go elsewhere to save yourself the issues. Other veterinary offices provide FREE rechecks and still help you without you paying them. Simply because they actually care. I prefer someone who actually cares instead of someone who is only in it for the money. To their response: not once did I send any belittling emails. I showed multiple people and they all agree that YOU were the one who was disrespectful and so beyond rude! I will NEVER go here again and anybody that wants to be treated kindly and respectfully will follow in my footsteps of never stepping foot in that facility again. Your call and voicemail left to me was beyond disrespectful and extremely hostile and that is so far beyond unprofessional! I nor anybody that I know, will stand to be treated like that. I've found multiple better exotic veterinarian offices that do FREE rechecks and are EXTREMELY nice and respectful. Much preferred over how I was treated here.. it's extremely sad how you treated me and I absolutely will NOT be tolerating that kind of behavior.

Welcome to Mountain West Veterinary Specialists - Exotics Department

For residents of Layton, Utah, and surrounding areas seeking specialized veterinary care for their non-traditional pets, Mountain West Veterinary Specialists - Exotics Department, located at 936 N Main St suite f, presents itself as a dedicated "Pet Hospital" catering to exotic animals. While the clinic has received positive feedback regarding the expertise of certain veterinarians, recent customer experiences also highlight concerns about their recheck fees and customer service practices.

One positive review specifically commends two veterinarians, Dr. Lofgren and Dr. Santangelo, stating that they have "gone above and beyond" to ensure beloved exotic pets receive the best care. The reviewer recommends these doctors to anyone with an exotic family member. This positive testimonial suggests that the clinic has knowledgeable and capable veterinarians specializing in the unique health needs of exotic animals such as reptiles, birds, and small mammals.

However, another, more detailed review presents a contrasting experience. This customer sought treatment for their Crested Gecko's toe and expressed concerns regarding the clinic's recheck fee policy. After an initial exam costing $85, a recheck was recommended for an additional $30. The customer noted that other veterinary offices offer free rechecks and questioned the clinic's claim that their $30 fee was the "cheapest recheck fee in Utah." The customer's preference was to send photos of the gecko's healing toe on day 13 to avoid the additional $30 charge, especially since the toe had healed. While the clinic advised against this, they acknowledged they couldn't force an in-person recheck.

Following the cancellation of the recheck appointment, the customer reported a lack of response to the photos they sent, leading them to believe that the clinic's concern was primarily financial. This perception was further exacerbated by a subsequent voicemail described as "borderline disrespectful" and "very attacking" simply for wanting good care for their pet. The customer's experience led them to conclude that the clinic prioritizes payment over genuine animal care and expressed their intention to seek veterinary services elsewhere.

This negative experience resonates with other negative reviews the customer had initially overlooked, leading them to advise others to "go elsewhere to save yourself the issues." The emphasis on free rechecks at other exotic veterinary offices and the perception of a lack of genuine care at Mountain West Veterinary Specialists - Exotics Department are significant points raised in this review.

It is important to consider both the positive and negative feedback to form a balanced understanding of the services offered at Mountain West Veterinary Specialists - Exotics Department. The positive review highlights the expertise of specific veterinarians in exotic animal care, which is a crucial factor for owners of non-traditional pets. The negative review, however, raises concerns about transparency and customer service regarding fees, particularly recheck charges, and the overall communication and attitude towards a customer who questioned these fees.

As a "Pet Hospital" specializing in exotic animals, Mountain West Veterinary Specialists - Exotics Department likely offers a range of services tailored to the unique needs of these pets. These services may include:

  • General Exotic Pet Wellness Exams: Routine check-ups to ensure the health and well-being of reptiles, birds, and small mammals.
  • Diagnosis and Treatment of Exotic Pet Illnesses: Addressing a variety of health issues specific to different exotic species.
  • Surgical Procedures: Performing surgeries when necessary for exotic animals.
  • Dental Care for Exotic Pets: Providing dental services appropriate for different species.
  • Nutritional Counseling for Exotic Pets: Offering guidance on the specialized dietary needs of exotic animals.
  • Emergency Care for Exotic Pets: Handling urgent medical situations involving exotic animals. It is advisable to confirm their emergency service availability and hours.
  • Diagnostic Imaging: Utilizing tools like X-rays and ultrasound to aid in diagnosis.
  • Laboratory Services: Conducting tests on blood, urine, and other samples.
  • Hospitalization for Exotic Pets: Providing a safe and monitored environment for recovering or critically ill exotic animals.

Given the conflicting customer experiences, it is advisable for potential clients to directly inquire about the clinic's policies on recheck fees, payment procedures, and communication practices. Speaking with the clinic staff can provide clarity on these aspects and help pet owners make informed decisions about their pet's care.

While the positive review speaks to the expertise of certain veterinarians, the negative feedback regarding fees and customer service should be carefully considered. For individuals searching for a "Pet Hospital" for their exotic pets in Layton, UT, Mountain West Veterinary Specialists - Exotics Department offers specialized care, but it is recommended to have open communication with the clinic about their policies and to weigh the available feedback when making a decision.

To obtain the most accurate and up-to-date information regarding their services, fees, and any potential promotional offers (though none were mentioned in the provided reviews), contacting Mountain West Veterinary Specialists - Exotics Department directly at (801) 683-6201 or +1 801-683-6201 is recommended. My exotics have seen both Dr. Lofgren and Dr. Santangelo both have gone above and beyond to ensure my beloved pets got the best care. I’d recommend them to anyone with an exotic family member!

My normally lively labradoodle became very subdued and had a painful response to having her abdomen pressed gently. I took her to Mountain View without an appointment, and they were able to see us quickly. Internist Dr Melanie Thompson stayed after her shift had ended to do imaging that confirmed no obstruction. They recommended a change of diet to lessen the chance of pancreatitis. They were so helpful. The entire staff was attentive and efficient.

This team is so caring, generous, attentive, and kind to both visitors and their pets. My experience with mountain west has been superb. The front desk staff is attentive, always answers calls in a timely manner, and are open to answering questions and assisting as best they can over the phone. In person they’re personable and understanding, as well as knowledgeable. The doctors are excellent- they kept me informed on the status of my pet, sent me updates multiple times a day, were honest and up front about pricing, understanding and flexible with budgets, and ultimately professional, kind, and educational. I am so lucky to have found this place and highly reccomend Mountain West!

We just love the whole exotics team! We had a chronically ill guinea pig that we had to take in monthly and I swear he loved going to see he's friends🧡. Our other piggy just had surgery and is recovering so well! Lofgren and her team have taken such good care of our boys!
