Operating under the platform category of "Pet Hospital," Midland Prairie Veterinary Services indicates a facility equipped to provide a wide array of medical, diagnostic, and surgical services for animals. This classification is broad enough to encompass both companion animal care (typically associated with "pets") and often includes services for larger animals, especially in agriculturally rich areas like Huxley. The term "Pet Hospital" suggests a level of comprehensive care that goes beyond a basic clinic, implying facilities for advanced diagnostics, surgery, and potentially overnight care for animals in need of more intensive treatment.
While specific details about the interior environment are not extensively provided in the given reviews, the general sentiment suggests a professional yet welcoming atmosphere. The fact that the team is "always great with our cattle as well" implies that their facilities and approach are adapted to handle animals of varying sizes, from a "Blue Heeler pup Duke" to large livestock. A typical "Pet Hospital" and large animal veterinary service would prioritize:
- Cleanliness and Safety: High standards of hygiene are crucial in any medical setting to prevent the spread of diseases and ensure a safe environment for both animals and humans. This includes sanitized examination rooms, surgical suites, and holding areas.
- Welcoming and Calm Atmosphere: Especially for small pets, a calm and low-stress environment helps to alleviate anxiety during veterinary visits. For larger animals, appropriate handling facilities and a knowledgeable team are essential for safe and efficient care.
- Dedicated Spaces: Separate areas might be available for small animal consultations and treatments versus facilities for large animal examinations or procedures, demonstrating versatility.
- Comfort for All Sizes: The ability to comfortably accommodate animals ranging from small puppies to full-grown cattle indicates thoughtful consideration of space and equipment.
Midland Prairie Veterinary Services offers a comprehensive suite of services, reflective of its "Pet Hospital" categorization and its ability to cater to both companion animals and livestock. While the reviews specifically mention "first shots" for a puppy and care for "cattle," the typical range of services offered by such a versatile practice would include:
- Small Animal Care (Pets):
- Preventative Wellness: Routine examinations, tailored vaccination protocols (as evidenced by "first shots" for Duke), comprehensive parasite prevention (fleas, ticks, heartworm, intestinal worms), and nutritional counseling to support optimal health and longevity.
- Diagnostic Services: In-house laboratory capabilities for blood tests, urinalysis, and fecal exams. Advanced imaging such as X-rays and potentially ultrasound for detailed internal diagnostics.
- Internal Medicine: Diagnosis and management of a wide array of non-surgical conditions affecting various organ systems.
- Soft Tissue Surgery: Routine procedures like spaying and neutering, lump removals, and other common surgeries, with a focus on pre-surgical assessment, anesthesia monitoring, and post-operative pain management.
- Dental Care: Professional dental cleanings, extractions, and guidance on at-home oral hygiene.
- Emergency and Urgent Care: While not explicitly stated, a "Pet Hospital" typically handles urgent medical situations during business hours.
- Large Animal Care (Livestock/Equine):
- Herd Health Management: Programs focusing on preventative care, disease control, and productivity for livestock, including vaccinations, deworming protocols, and nutritional guidance.
- Field Services: On-farm visits for examinations, treatments, and procedures for animals that cannot be easily transported to the clinic, such as cattle.
- Reproductive Services: Breeding soundness exams, artificial insemination support, and pregnancy diagnostics.
- Diagnostics and Treatment: Addressing common diseases and injuries in large animals, often involving specialized equipment and techniques.
- Emergency Care: Responding to urgent medical situations in large animals that require immediate attention.

Apr 14, 2025 · Katie ParkerI've been going to this vet since it was originally Ballard Vet Clinic and have always had a great experience with Dr. May. When I heard they were going through a transition to Midland Prairie Vet Services, I was a little nervous that they would lose the "small town vet feel". I was totally wrong. Our dog had to have an emergency visit this week and was seen by Dr. Meredith (who we'd never met before). She was truly amazing and made our emergency visit as comfortable as possible. She even took our dog home with her for the evening to keep an eye on her, which meant the world to us. This office definitely still has the small town vet feel and we couldn't be happier!
Mar 22, 2024 · Kaylee RhodenDr. May is a great Veterinarian. Our dog puts up a fight every time he has to get nails trimmed. He is very patient with Roscoe and his shenanigans. Everyone there is pretty great.
Mar 31, 2021 · Rita ThorsonAll of the people here are very caring and my dogs always feel comfortable with them. They handled everything quickly and diligently and I will definitely continue taking my dogs here.
