It's your typical animal hospital as far as fees go.. its very Clean, got friendly staff, but God forbid if you need a medicine changed and the doctor who saw you isn't on the clock... they'll try to make you come in for ANOTHER appointment (which you pay for!) No matter how your pet is doing. I spent $3500 on my pet to be hospitalized, just to be charged two other appointment fees cause the doctor i originally saw wasn't on the clock the other times i needed something for my cat.. Ridiculous. My cat is now dealing with respiratory issues while doing chemo due to the fact that the doctor on call doesn't want to "mess with another doctors prescription" by giving him an antibiotic without an evaluation appointment .. as if I can afford one at this point?

Metzger Animal Hospital: Mannino Shelly DVM Introduce
Welcome to Metzger Animal Hospital, located at 1044 Benner Pike, State College, PA 16801, USA. You can reach them at (814) 364-4006 or +1 814-364-4006. For pet owners in State College seeking a local Pet Hospital, Metzger Animal Hospital, under the direction of Mannino Shelly DVM, offers veterinary services. Based on the available customer reviews, experiences appear to be somewhat varied, with positive remarks regarding cleanliness and emergency care contrasted by concerns about appointment policies and prescription management.
One review describes Metzger Animal Hospital as "your typical animal hospital as far as fees go," suggesting that their pricing is generally in line with other veterinary practices. Positively, this reviewer notes that the facility is "very Clean" and has "friendly staff." However, this positive feedback is counterbalanced by a significant concern regarding prescription changes when the initially seen doctor is not on duty. The reviewer states, "...God forbid if you need a medicine changed and the doctor who saw you isn't on the clock... they'll try to make you come in for ANOTHER appointment (which you pay for!) No matter how your pet is doing." This raises questions about the flexibility of their prescription management protocols and the potential for additional costs even when a pet's condition might warrant a simple medication adjustment.
This concern is echoed in another review from a pet owner who spent a substantial amount ($3500) on their pet's hospitalization. They recount being "charged two other appointment fees cause the doctor i originally saw wasn't on the clock the other times i needed something for my cat.. Ridiculous." This further emphasizes a potential policy of requiring additional paid appointments even for follow-up needs related to ongoing treatment, particularly if the original veterinarian is unavailable.
A third review provides a specific and concerning example of this issue. The pet owner states, "My cat is now dealing with respiratory issues while doing chemo due to the fact that the doctor on call doesn't want to 'mess with another doctors prescription' by giving him an antibiotic without an evaluation appointment .. as if I can afford one at this point?" This paints a picture where a pet undergoing serious treatment is potentially delayed in receiving necessary medication due to internal protocols around different doctors' prescriptions, with cost being a significant barrier for the owner.
Despite these criticisms, there is also a very positive review highlighting emergency care: "Wonderful experience for our dog. We had an emergency on a holiday. They were able to see us that day and they treated our beloved boy with so much compassion. Highly recommend this animal hospital." This indicates that Metzger Animal Hospital is capable of providing timely and compassionate care during emergencies, which is a crucial aspect of a Pet Hospital's services.
Based on these mixed reviews, the environment at Metzger Animal Hospital is described as "very Clean" with "friendly staff." However, the internal policies regarding prescription changes and the need for follow-up appointments, especially when the original vet is unavailable, appear to be areas of concern for some clients. The positive note regarding compassionate emergency care suggests that in critical situations, the clinic responds well.
As a Pet Hospital led by Mannino Shelly DVM, Metzger Animal Hospital likely offers a range of veterinary services. Based on the reviews, these would include:
- General medical care for pets.
- Hospitalization services.
- Emergency care, including on holidays.
- Prescription medication dispensing.
- Potentially surgical and diagnostic services (though not explicitly detailed in these reviews).
The features of Metzger Animal Hospital that can be gleaned from these reviews include a clean facility and friendly staff. However, a notable point of concern is the potential requirement for additional paid appointments for prescription changes or follow-up needs if the original veterinarian is not available. On the positive side, their ability to handle emergencies with compassion is a significant feature.
Currently, there is no promotional information available in the provided reviews. To inquire about any special offers, new client discounts, or other promotions at Metzger Animal Hospital, it would be best to contact them directly at (814) 364-4006.
For pet owners in State College, PA, Metzger Animal Hospital, under the care of Mannino Shelly DVM, presents a mixed profile based on recent feedback. While the clinic is noted for its cleanliness and friendly staff, potential clients should be aware of the reported policies regarding prescription changes and the necessity of new appointments when the initially seen doctor is not on duty, as this has led to frustration and additional costs for some pet owners. On the other hand, their compassionate emergency care is a definite strength. When considering Metzger Animal Hospital as your Pet Hospital, it may be beneficial to inquire about their policies on prescription refills and follow-up care to ensure they align with your expectations and financial considerations. We encourage you to contact them directly to discuss your pet's needs and to gain a clearer understanding of their practices.

Apr 07, 2025 · Rob AversaA bit pricey, but the staff is extremely nice and understanding in a time of deep sorrow. Had to bring a friend and her dog to them and ended up having to put her dog down. Very sad day today. Thanks for being supportive.
Mar 14, 2025 · Chris DeckAs emergency visits go, mine went so much better due to the empathy, and care of the staff here. My dog was well cared for and the surgery went very well. Cost is not low, but I was expecting it due to the nature of emergency services. I would definitely recommend them.
