I've visited MedVet Akron for an actual pet emergency, as an urgent care when my regular vet was too booked for a same day visit, and recently for orthopedic surgery. Every time I have been warmly welcomed, communicated with clearly, and treated with respect and care by folks who genuinely love animals. Following her knee surgery, my Chihuahua is using MedVet Rehabilitation services. She's so reactive I didn't think rehab would be an option for her but the staff meets her where she's at and have figured out ways to work with her. I'm so thankful this place!

Our dog Hylie passed yesterday after a 5mo battle with lymphoma. We worked with Dr. Bloch in oncology over those 5 months. Dr. Bloch is clearly knowledgeable. At the initial visit she answered our questions without fluff but with care. However, in that five months, that first visit was the one and only time we actually saw her or spoke with her. Hylie's care was not complicated but, as many dog owners know, they are family. So navigating care decisions is emotionally fraught. We want to make the best decisions and that requires information and more information. To be clear, Dr. Bloch (her team) was accessible via email and they answered those emails 100% of the time. The frustrating part is that many of these care decisions were timely and needed information quickly. Email is not conducive to that. Questions would lead to answers that then lead to additional questions. The back and forth of those emails and the time it took to get information was excruciating. At one point we asked to see her for five minutes in the lobby during one of Hylie's visits so we could discuss in real time one of the big decisions that lay ahead. She flat out would not take the time to see us. We asked if it was just that day and perhaps she was too busy so maybe a phone call could be scheduled. Again, no. Email, they said. Or schedule a (paid) appt weeks out. There were times we felt like we were in a foot race for care decisions and MedVet Akron threw sludgey mud in our path. Oncology is only open Tues - Fri and of course many of our questions came on Fridays or weekends and we'd have to call the front desk so let me review front desk. Let me first say that everyone was friendly. No one was rude or dismissive. BUT there is a difference between nice ... and helpful. We felt like the staff was rarely helpful. We often had to talk them into getting answers for us. For example, at the end of her life, Hylie was bloated. We called in one Sunday to ask about what we could give her to relieve her bloating. The answer every single time we called was "Oncology isn't open. Call back Tuesday." So that led to me saying "Can you please ask one of the doctors on call this weekend?" She came back with the answer to take her for a walk or give her some GasX. Ok..she couldn't do walks at that stage so I asked for the dosage of GasX. She said she didn't know but she'd call me back. She never called. This is one example of probably 8-10 times we'd call to get help. Prescription refills, alleviating discomfort, even minor billing questions like "how much would x be" so we could try to understand costs ahead of treatments... all met with a nice voice but someone not willing to be terribly helpful. This distinction is important. When dealing with an emotionally charged situation, one that I was trying to navigate with facts and care for my sweet girl, I felt like I was trying to convince the staff at MedVet Akron to help me. I will also say that MedVet Akron is expensive. Expense wasn't a huge barrier for us but we had to be deliberate about what we spent. There were times we were quoted one price and charged another. And something as simple as nausea medicine was $13 a pill where my regular vet charged $5 a pill. I recognize the treatment and education of an oncology dept provides more value and therefore higher cost. But to charge nearly 3x for a pill, it felt like a money grab in a time of turmoil. Having to run around to appointments during weekday work hours and get medicines from multiple places and to continue to press medical staff to help you... it added a layer of chaos instead of comfort. To the owners of MedVet Akron, I hope you will take this feedback not as an angry customer seeking revenge but as someone who sees ways you can improve to make a huge impact on families going through some of the worst decisions of their lives. Our experience with you was not horrible, but it was in fact frustrating. We felt like HYLIE got good care, but we did not feel like WE got good care. And in your line of work you should be doing both.

The staff is wonderful, friendly and they showed great compassion for my dog and me. We were waited on as quickly as possible, labwork was done and my dog's illness was diagnosed. The doctor then informed me of the range of options available to me in further looking into Lola's illness. She told me what could be done, what it would tell us and the cost involved. Then she left the final decision up to me. Once I opted for a treatment plan, she assured me that Lola would be feeling much better very soon. She instructed me on care that would help to ensure Lola stayed healthy, since her breed was prone to this illness. Lastly, she apologized for the wait, which considering all the patients, hadn't been very long at all. The report of Lola's visit and a subsequent culture result was forwarded to my regular vet promptly. The bill was quite reasonable. Lola loved the doctor and all the attention and kind words she got from her and all the staff. They made the experience a pleasant one for both of us; which took our minds off how ill and miserable Lola was. The waiting area is quite large, and there are various seating areas, with comfortable seats, which allows people to spread out with their pets and enjoy privacy. There are vending machines with snacks, drinks and coffee makers also. Lola and I highly recommend the hospital! When you are in need and you want the best for your pet, it is the hospital to choose.
