Welcome to Large Animal Practice
Large Animal Practice, located at 141 Indiana Ave, Jamestown, NY 14701, USA, and reachable at (716) 483-2598 or +1 716-483-2598, stands as a critical and highly esteemed "Pet Hospital" specializing in the care of large animals, particularly horses, ponies, and likely other livestock. Unlike conventional small animal clinics that operate from a fixed facility, this practice embodies a mobile veterinary service model, bringing expert care directly to the animals on their farms or properties. This specialized focus within the "Pet Hospital" category addresses a unique and vital need for the agricultural and equine communities in and around Jamestown, NY.
The "environment" of Large Animal Practice is, by its very nature, diverse and dynamic. Instead of a traditional clinic waiting room and examination rooms, their operational environment is primarily the farms, barns, and pastures of their clients. This mobile model is crucial for large animal veterinary care, as transporting sick or injured horses and livestock to a central clinic can be extremely challenging, stressful, and even detrimental to their health. Dr. Becht and his tech are equipped to handle examinations, treatments, and procedures on-site, offering unparalleled convenience and reducing the burden on animal owners.
This means the clinic setting adapts to the specific needs of each animal and location. Whether it's a stable for a horse, a pasture for a pony, or a barn for other livestock, the veterinary team brings their expertise and equipment to the animal's familiar surroundings. This approach often helps in reducing the stress on the animal, which can be beneficial for diagnosis and recovery. The flexibility to operate in various outdoor and indoor farm settings highlights their adaptability and specialized equipment for mobile veterinary care.
Large Animal Practice provides a range of essential veterinary services tailored specifically for large animals. Based on client testimonials, these services include:
- Emergency and Urgent Care: A standout feature is their exceptional responsiveness to emergencies. Customers have highlighted Dr. Becht's willingness to respond to calls "on weekends and late evening 10, 11 pm" and his ability to arrive at a barn within an hour to treat critical conditions like a horse with choke. This immediate availability for urgent situations is paramount for large animal owners, where delays can have severe consequences.
- Field Diagnostics and Treatment: Their ability to successfully treat a horse with choke on-site and address an eye irritation "immediately (same day)" demonstrates their capacity for on-site diagnosis and immediate implementation of treatment plans. This includes administering necessary medications and performing procedures in the field.
- Preventative Health and Vaccinations: The practice proactively manages preventative care, as evidenced by sending "reminder postcards to remind of vaccinations due." This commitment to routine health maintenance helps in preventing diseases and maintaining the overall well-being of the animals.
- Humane Euthanasia Services: Dr. Becht and his tech perform euthanasia services for large animals with professionalism and compassion. The review regarding the euthanasia of a pony highlights a sensitive and well-managed process, ensuring the animal is "finally out of pain." This crucial service provides comfort to owners during difficult times.
- Follow-up Care and Communication: Dr. Becht is noted for his thorough follow-up, including leaving voicemails to check on an animal's progress. This dedication to post-treatment communication reassures owners and ensures continuity of care, a vital aspect often overlooked in busy practices.
Several features make Large Animal Practice a highly recommended veterinary service:
- Exceptional Responsiveness and Availability: The ability to respond to calls late at night and on weekends, often arriving within an hour for emergencies, is a critical feature that sets this practice apart. For large animal owners, this level of availability is often the most important factor in choosing a vet.
- Competent and Effective Treatment: Clients praise the "competent treatment" provided by Dr. Becht. The successful resolution of severe conditions like choke and festering eye irritations underscores his clinical expertise and ability to achieve positive outcomes in challenging field conditions.
- Reasonable and Transparent Fees: The mention of "reasonable fees" is a significant advantage, especially given the often high costs associated with large animal veterinary care. This affordability makes quality care more accessible to farm owners.
- Compassionate and Professional Approach: Whether it's managing an emergency or handling the sensitive process of euthanasia, Dr. Becht and his team demonstrate high levels of professionalism and empathy. The appreciation for their handling of the pony's euthanasia speaks to their compassionate care.
- Proactive Client Communication: Sending vaccination reminders and following up on patient progress demonstrates a commitment to comprehensive care and effective client communication, fostering a strong veterinarian-client-patient relationship.
- Mobile Service Model: The inherent nature of being a mobile large animal practice means convenience for the client and less stress for the animal, as they are treated in their own environment. This specialized approach is a core strength.
While specific marketing campaigns are not detailed, the strong positive testimonials serve as the most powerful form of promotion for Large Animal Practice. The personal narratives of immediate emergency response, successful treatments, and compassionate end-of-life care resonate deeply within the large animal owning community.
The client who stated, "I highly recommend them. Thank you so very much for coming out, you are very appreciated," after the compassionate euthanasia of their pony, offers a testament to the practice's empathetic approach during difficult times. Another client's detailed account of Dr. Becht's late-night calls and immediate responses to emergencies, coupled with his proactive reminders and "reasonable fees," paints a picture of a dedicated and reliable professional. The explicit comparison, "Id rather have competent treatment than superficial niceties and poor ethics that I experienced with another area vet," further highlights the integrity and effectiveness of Dr. Becht's practice.
These real-world experiences, shared through word-of-mouth and online reviews, are invaluable for attracting new clients in the specialized field of large animal veterinary medicine. The consistent themes of responsiveness, competence, compassion, and fair pricing collectively form a compelling promotional message for Large Animal Practice, solidifying its reputation as a trustworthy and essential service provider for the equine and livestock communities in and around Jamestown, NY.

Nov 16, 2024 · Kerri JacksonI have called him on weekends and late evening 10, 11 pm and he has responded within an hour … last Summer came to my barn at 11 p to treat a horse with choke successfully. And another time he treated one of my horses with an eye irritation immediately ( same day) and followed up by leaving a voicemail about how he was doing. Also, he sent reminder postcard to remind of vaccinations due etc. …all around a good experience and his fees are reasonable. Id rather have competent treatment than superficial niceties and poor ethics that I experienced with another area vet.
Apr 13, 2023 · M HazeltineI have had Dr. Becht tend to my horses for several years. It doesn't matter what time or day it is if I need him he comes out to us in the far reaches of Warren County. He comes out when other vets who are closer refused. If I have a situation that needs a higher level of care he doesn't hesitate to send us to the proper place. He always makes sure that he corresponds with the big clinics before our arrival. We had a barrel horse that had injured an eye. He sent us to Columbus Ohio to the equine opthamology specialist there, and let them know we were heading out. They were ready and waiting when we pulled in, opened the trailer doors and wasted no time. He has always been there for us whenever we need him!

Feb 11, 2019 · Tammi HoldenI have never had an issue with him! He’s professional and doesn’t talk to you badly like other vets I’ve delt with. He’ll answer any questions you have and is straight forward. He’s gentle with both my mares. I could have asked for a better vet. I would recommend him.

Sep 27, 2022 · Jackalynn BeckerI do not recommend him for horse euthanasia. It was an extremely traumatic experience and should have been handled very differently. I started to hear about other experiences people have had with him regarding horse euthanasia and they were just as bad. Never in a million years will I use his services ever again.
