Environment of Care and Professionalism
The environment at Lakeside Animal Hospital, as perceived by clients, appears to evoke mixed sentiments, ranging from deeply positive experiences centered on compassion to serious concerns regarding post-operative care and communication. On one hand, a highly positive review describes the office as "amazing," with "the most caring staff ever" whose every word "was of pure love for animals." This suggests an atmosphere where pets and their owners feel a genuine sense of warmth and affection from the veterinary team. Specifically, Dr. Licata is noted for being "so gentle," fostering an environment where a cat reportedly "showed no fear with her or her techs" due to their perceived gentleness. This indicates that for some, the clinic successfully creates a calm and comforting space, conducive to reducing anxiety during veterinary visits.
However, another detailed account raises significant concerns about the operational environment during critical post-procedure periods. The description of a pet waiting hours for discharge updates, a vet leaving before a post-operative discussion, and the ultimate decision to send a pet home unsupervised despite not meeting discharge standards, points to potential issues in communication, supervision, and protocols during busy periods or critical recovery phases. The "closing for the night" decision, leaving an animal with severe post-anesthetic complications either unsupervised overnight in the clinic or sent home in a compromised state, suggests a lapse in creating a continuously safe and supervised environment for animals recovering from procedures, particularly outside of standard operating hours.
Services Offered for Pet Health
As a "Pet Hospital," Lakeside Animal Hospital is expected to offer a comprehensive range of veterinary services to address the health needs of cats and dogs. Based on the customer feedback, it is evident that they provide at least the following services:
- Routine Care & Vaccinations: The positive review mentioning "every word they spoke was of pure love for animals" for general care implies that they handle routine wellness visits, vaccinations, and preventive care, which are fundamental to maintaining a pet's long-term health.
- Dental Procedures: A significant service highlighted in the feedback is dental procedures. The detailed account of a dog undergoing a "dental procedure" indicates that Lakeside Animal Hospital is equipped and staffed to perform such operations, which are crucial for a pet's oral health and overall well-being.
- Surgical Procedures (General): While only dental was explicitly mentioned, dental procedures often involve general anesthesia and surgical aspects. This suggests the clinic has the capability for at least some general surgical interventions.
- Post-Operative Care & Discharge: The clinic has established "typical standards they like for discharge after a procedure," indicating protocols for monitoring recovery and ensuring pets are stable before returning home. However, the efficacy of these protocols in practice, particularly concerning communication and overnight supervision, has been a point of concern for at least one client.
As a comprehensive pet hospital, it is also highly probable that they offer diagnostic services (like blood work, imaging), treatment for illnesses and injuries, pain management, and potentially emergency stabilization before referral, though explicit details are not provided in the given information.
Key Features: Compassionate Staff & Post-Operative Concerns
The features of Lakeside Animal Hospital present a dual narrative based on the provided reviews:
- Caring and Gentle Staff: A significant feature is the perception of "caring staff" and the "gentleness" of Dr. Licata and her technicians. This suggests a compassionate approach to handling animals, which can greatly reduce pet anxiety during visits and build trust with owners. The ability for a cat to show "no fear" indicates a calming and reassuring presence from the veterinary team.
- Professional Expertise: Dr. Licata is described as "amazing" by one client, implying confidence in her veterinary skills and knowledge. The staff is also viewed as professional in their general interactions and care for animals.
- Communication and Post-Operative Protocols (Areas of Concern): Conversely, a critical feature raised is the alleged breakdown in communication and adherence to post-operative discharge standards. The client's experience points to a concerning lack of immediate updates, absence of direct communication from the performing vet at discharge, and the critical decision to offer leaving a severely compromised animal unsupervised overnight, or discharging it in a non-ambulatory state. This raises questions about patient monitoring, veterinarian availability post-procedure, and client education during recovery, particularly for complex cases or procedures requiring anesthesia.
- Client Relationships: The office is recommended "over and over" by one client, reflecting strong positive relationships built on trust and excellent care. However, the second review highlights how a severe negative experience led to "quickly pull my dog from the practice" and finding "a much better veterinary office," indicating that while some relationships are strong, others can be irrevocably damaged by perceived lapses in care.
These contrasting accounts suggest that while the clinic aims to provide compassionate care, there might be inconsistencies in its application, particularly concerning the aftermath of complex procedures and communication during critical times.
Promotional Information and Client Feedback
The most direct "promotional information" for Lakeside Animal Hospital comes from the very vocal feedback of its existing and past clients. Positive reviews, such as "I would recommend this office over and over," serve as strong testimonials, indicating that for many, the compassionate and gentle approach makes them a preferred choice for their pet's care. This word-of-mouth endorsement is a powerful form of promotion, attracting new clients who prioritize a caring environment for their animals.
However, the detailed negative review also acts as a form of public information that prospective clients may consider. The specific account of a severe post-operative complication and the client's dissatisfaction with the clinic's handling of the situation are openly shared. This type of feedback, particularly when shared on public platforms, contributes significantly to the clinic's public perception. For future clients, the "promotional information" is a balance of these experiences, encouraging them to weigh the perceived compassionate daily care against potential concerns regarding critical incident management and communication. The clinic's ability to maintain a positive reputation will depend on its capacity to consistently deliver high-quality care across all services and stages of a pet's health journey.
In conclusion, Lakeside Animal Hospital in Rochester, NY, presents itself as a veterinary care provider with a highly compassionate staff, especially noted for their gentle approach during routine interactions. While many clients report excellent experiences and highly recommend the practice, there have been serious concerns raised regarding the management of post-operative care and communication during critical recovery periods. For pet owners, this indicates a need to consider individual priorities when choosing a vet: whether the consistently positive day-to-day interactions outweigh potential concerns about handling complex or emergency post-surgical situations.

Apr 27, 2025 · Debbie MeliI’m not typically one to post reviews. I wanted to take some time to process what happened before making a decision and I think that it is important that other clients know my experience. In January I walked my dog into Lakeside Animal Hospital for a dental procedure first thing in the morning. By late afternoon I still had not received an update on how the procedure went and I called to find out his status. I was told that due to other procedures my dog’s procedure was delayed and that they were still working on him. Around 5pm I came to pick him up and when I got there his vet, who performed the procedure, Dr. Licata, had her coat on and was ready to leave for the day and did not speak to me at all regarding my dog’s procedure. After waiting some time a veterinary tech came out to say my dog was not able to walk on his own yet and they wanted to wait to see if he would come around more in order to leave. By this time it was close to 6pm and he still could not stand or walk out of the clinic. The veterinary tech came out to say my dog was not meeting the typical standards they like for discharge after a procedure, because he could not walk on his own, and that they were closing for the night so my options where to either 1. Leave him in the clinic overnight, even though no one on staff would be there or 2. Bring him home and if he’s not better call in the morning. With no vet in the clinic overnight to watch my dog I wasn’t going to leave him there unsupervised. My dog had to be carried into my car, then carried into my house and could not move anything. Could not move his head, wag his tail, nothing. Once home I knew something was not right and I brought my dog to the emergency vet in Orchard Park (they were excellent with his care). He was diagnosed with a cervical spinal cord injury. My dog had tetraparesis and couldn’t move on his own. We are 11 weeks post-injury and he is still not fully walking or standing without support. Lakeside Animal Hospital and Dr. Licata were negligent in sending a dog home in that state. Dr. Licata left for the night while a dog under her supervision was not meeting their typical standards for discharge after a procedure she performed. Offering to leave a dog, not having a normal recovery, unsupervised in the clinic overnight is poor care. My dog walked into their clinic and needed to be carried out. I quickly pulled my dog from the practice and have found a much better veterinary office.
Apr 06, 2025 · Alison GerewDr. Licata is incredibly knowledgeable and a great listener. Her passion for her patients is clear, and she makes you feel like your pet is the only one she’s seeing that day. The prices are also very reasonable!
Apr 23, 2025 · Kati PalfeyWhy are you completely closed more than 30 minutes before your listed business hours that are on your website? I really needed to pick up a medication for my dog that she needs today. This was the very last straw, among a woodpile. I feel it my duty to warn others that their pet's safety could very realistically be at risk at this veterinary practice. It is not safe to take your pet here. There are many reviews saying this, and they are all true. And the owner talking about "a veterinary field crisis" or whatever, is lying. I recommend Penfield Veterinary Hospital. Very easy to get a new patient appointment within as little as a week, lovely in-person experience (even my pet was so much calmer here), with prescriptions immediately filled while I was still there-so quick!, received direct call follow-up from the vet herself saying bloodwork looked great, and it all cheaper than Lakeside. While I was there I also asked about if they have same day emergency appointments available. They said of course they do. They set aside a certain number of times each day for that very purpose. Do not let the owner of Lakeside scare you into thinking there are no other options. Lakeside is simply a very poorly run business only concerned with profits, at the expense of it's vulnerable patients and their owners.
Feb 19, 2025 · KTI am giving a three because for routine care they are sufficient. However, wait to check in and out is very slow with or without new staff training. I had my 10 uear old dogs blood drawn for $300 last Friday. I still cant get a real response beyond a tech emailing they suspect Cushings. They wont give me a copy of the results. After being unhappy that noone has explained test results I learned a tech called my work phone and left a message. Why? It was obvious that wasnt personal phone based on my voice message. Days later all i have is a short email. I need more info and cant get it. Was first thing appointment for last visit and still had an extreme wait in a room with odor and a very stressed older dog. Its hard to feel good about possible treatment for Cushings if this is what I am going to deal with. Happy to take my money but not at all invested in explaining options. Dr spends very little time and nothing since test. I see this same complaint over and over again. Now what wait for another response saying email or call to provide feedback they wont respond to. God only knows if i will be able to get both of my dogs records if they force me to leave!
