Welcome to Kitties & Kanines Pet Resource Center, Inc.

Kitties & Kanines Pet Resource Center, Inc., located at 4300 Phoenix Ave, Fort Smith, AR 72903, USA, stands as a unique and vital institution in the Fort Smith community. Unlike traditional for-profit veterinary practices, Kitties & Kanines operates as a non-profit "Pet Hospital," with a core mission to provide affordable, high-quality veterinary care to combat pet overpopulation and improve animal welfare in the Arkansas River Valley. Since opening in 2009, it has been recognized as a pioneering clinic in Arkansas for its dedicated approach to high-volume, low-cost spay/neuter services, vaccinations, and other essential pet health interventions.

The environment at Kitties & Kanines Pet Resource Center, Inc. is designed to be accessible and welcoming, though it operates on a walk-in basis for many services, which means there can be waiting times. The waiting area is generally described as comfortable, allowing pet owners to sit and interact, creating a community feel. Despite the potential for busyness, reviews consistently highlight the friendly, kind, and courteous demeanor of the staff, including the front desk personnel, veterinary technicians, and veterinarians. This commitment to a positive experience, even in a bustling environment, reflects their love for animals and dedication to their mission. The clinic is equipped with a state-of-the-art surgery center and modern equipment, indicating a professional and capable medical setting. While the primary focus is on efficient, low-cost services, the underlying ethos of compassion and genuine care for the animals is evident in the interactions described by clients. The fact that pets recovering from surgery are sometimes in the waiting area offers a unique, albeit sometimes busy, glimpse into the clinic's operations and the visible recovery of the animals.

Kitties & Kanines Pet Resource Center, Inc. offers a focused range of veterinary services, primarily concentrating on preventative care and population control, while also addressing common health issues. Their key services include:

  • Low-Cost Spay/Neuter Surgeries: This is the flagship program of Kitties & Kanines. They perform a high volume of these procedures annually (around 7,000 surgeries per year), recognizing that affordability is a major barrier to addressing pet overpopulation. They have specific pricing tiers for different weights and genders, as well as additional fees for conditions like pregnancy (early, mid, late term) or cryptorchidism. They also offer specific services for feral cats, including ear-tipping.

  • Low-Cost Vaccinations: Administering over 14,000 vaccines each year, they provide essential immunizations, including rabies (which is required if not already current for surgical patients), distemper, and other vital shots to protect pets from common diseases.

  • Wellness Clinics: These clinics operate on a walk-in basis (Monday - Friday, 10 AM - 2 PM) and address general wellness needs, including flea and tick treatments, de-worming, nail trims, and initial assessments for skin issues and heartworms. There is typically a minimal office visit fee for these services, making them highly accessible.

  • Microchipping: A crucial service for pet identification and recovery, often offered in conjunction with other procedures.

  • Heartworm Preventative: They offer heartworm medication, requiring a record of a recent heartworm test for purchase, emphasizing responsible pet health management.

  • Pet Food Pantry: As part of their broader "Pet Resource Center" mission, they provide a free pet food pantry for low-income pet owners needing assistance, helping to keep pets in their homes.

  • Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) Program: For community cats, they support and facilitate TNR efforts, which are critical for humanely managing feral cat populations.

  • Limited Over-the-Counter Medications/Supplies: While not a full-service pharmacy, they may offer basic items like Elizabethan collars, recovery suits, cardboard carriers, and take-home pain medication post-surgery (based on weight), as well as treatments for worms and flea infestations detected during visits.

  • Adoption Services: Although their primary focus is on spay/neuter and wellness, Kitties & Kanines also facilitates pet adoptions, working to find loving forever homes for animals that come into their care. They conduct interviews and meet-and-greets to ensure suitable matches.

The distinguishing features of Kitties & Kanines Pet Resource Center, Inc. revolve around its non-profit model, affordability, and commitment to community animal welfare.

  • Non-Profit Status and Mission-Driven Care: This is their most significant feature. They are a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, driven by the mission to provide a non-lethal solution to homeless, abandoned, and feral animal populations. Their goal is to make euthanasia no longer an acceptable means of population control. This means their operations are funded by grants, fundraisers, and community donations, allowing them to offer services at significantly lower costs than typical veterinary clinics.

  • High-Volume, Low-Cost Services: They are renowned for their ability to perform a large number of spay/neuter surgeries and administer many vaccinations at highly affordable rates. This accessibility is crucial for low-income pet owners and for addressing the broader issue of pet overpopulation effectively.

  • Walk-in Clinic Model for Wellness: For many services, particularly wellness and vaccinations, they operate as a walk-in clinic. This enhances accessibility for pet owners who may not be able to schedule appointments far in advance, though it does mean waiting times can vary.

  • Compassionate and Caring Staff: Despite the high volume of patients, numerous reviews attest to the staff's kindness, friendliness, and genuine care for the animals. They are praised for treating pets with gentleness and respect, and for being patient and helpful with pet owners, answering questions and providing guidance.

  • Community Impact: Kitties & Kanines plays a critical role in the Fort Smith area's animal welfare efforts. By providing affordable spay/neuter and wellness services, they directly contribute to reducing the number of unwanted animals and improving the health of pets in the community. Their free pet food pantry further supports pet retention.

  • Efficient Operations: Their specialization in high-volume procedures and walk-in clinics indicates an efficient operational model, honed to deliver essential services to a large number of animals.

As a non-profit, Kitties & Kanines Pet Resource Center, Inc.'s "promotional information" primarily focuses on their mission and the impact of their affordable services. They heavily rely on community awareness of their low prices and the compassionate care they provide. Donations are actively welcomed and encouraged, as they are crucial for sustaining their operations and continuing to offer their low-cost services. Their website (kittiesandkanines.com) serves as a key resource for detailed information on services, pricing, and how to donate.

For direct inquiries or to confirm current services and hours, clients can reach them at (479) 434-4740 or +1 479-434-4740. Their typical operating hours are Monday through Friday from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, with wellness clinics specifically running from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM on weekdays. They are closed on weekends. Given their walk-in model for wellness and vaccine clinics, it's advisable for clients to be prepared for potential wait times, especially on busy days. The positive feedback from the community, with clients expressing gratitude for the affordable care and the kind treatment of their pets, serves as their most powerful promotion, illustrating the tangible benefits they bring to pet owners and animals in Fort Smith.

Front Desk, techs, volunteer's and every vet we have had through the years have been friendly and kind. They are good about answering questions and treating our cat very kind. Prices are reasonable and they offer several shots besides the rabies. Since it is a walk in clinic you do have to wait depending how many other pets and owners are ahead of you. There is a waiting area with chairs and other pet owners you can strike up a conversation with to pass the time. We have always been pleased with the service and will continue to bring our cat every year. If your looking for a good place with people who care and reasonable fees then I would recommend you go to this clinic.

I had my cat Iris fixed here, they did a wonderful job. Very kind. First time ever using this place, everyone made me feel very comfortable which I appreciate. Iris is healing up great! I'll definitely be coming back to this vet with any of my animals.

They have very kind, friendly & knowledgeable workers. I didn't have to make an appointment for my pet's yearly shots, as they informed me that I could just walk in to get him all the updated stuff for the year. They took good care of my fur baby's needs & helped sooth him when he was scared & upset on their table. Fellow pet parents were also friendly & we enjoyed petting the adoptable kitties in the waiting room together. I got the monthly flea medicine from the front clerks and they informed me clearly on everything I needed to know. Love this place and the wonderful people here, will be returning to get more flea medicine as my kitty needs it, and next year's shots.

I've taken kittens that I've fostered to be neutered and spayed. Most recently was my dog to be spayed, and again without incident. The staff are all very sweet and welcoming, and my dogs have always had peaceful interactions ☺️
