We recently decided to reach out to this vet's office after our previous vet was no longer willing to help us with our 11 year old border collie who was dying of mast cell cancer. Our dog was doing wonderfully on prednisone for this cancer but our past vet wasn't willing to continue it due to our dog's liver enzymes being elevated so she begin to decline very fast to the point where I was going to schedule for her to be put down. Our dog was only declining due to the tumor becoming huge and inflamed and she was not able to walk. However, her appetite and overall self was not in poor condition. It was heartbreaking. I reached out to Dr. Collyer for an appointment to see if she could extend her quality of life on palliative care and she was wonderful to work with. She not only gave our dog more prednisone to make her comfortable and have a better quality of life, but she also gave us additional medications and herbs to help her. She explained that this not a cure but will hopefully extend her life and give her better quality of living and it has! She is back to walking and living life again. We know that we probably don't have much longer with her, but we are so happy to have some extra time with her and that she is no longer suffering from the size of the tumor. We were very pleased with the care she has gotten and we also love that Dr. Collyer offers in home euthanasia services as well.

Serving as a crucial resource for pet owners in Shelocta and the surrounding areas, Keystone Veterinary Services is committed to the health and well-being of a diverse range of animals. The environment at Keystone Veterinary Services is frequently described as "clean and very welcoming" by visitors. This focus on cleanliness and a friendly atmosphere contributes significantly to a positive experience for both pets and their owners. A welcoming environment is particularly important in veterinary settings, as it can help reduce anxiety for animals and create a sense of comfort and trust for owners during what can sometimes be challenging or emotional visits. The facility's upkeep suggests a professional and organized approach to animal care, ensuring that the practice is well-prepared to provide medical services in a sterile and comfortable setting.

Keystone Veterinary Services offers a broad spectrum of veterinary services, catering to the diverse needs of the animal population in Shelocta. While specific, exhaustive lists of every single service may not be publicly detailed, reviews and typical offerings of a comprehensive "Pet Hospital" indicate that they provide:

  • Preventative and Wellness Care: This forms the cornerstone of their practice, including routine physical examinations, tailored vaccination protocols to protect against common diseases, and parasite control programs. Preventative care aims to maintain optimal health and detect potential issues early, often preventing more serious and costly conditions down the line.
  • Diagnostic Services: Essential for accurate diagnoses, these services likely include in-house laboratory testing (blood work, urinalysis, fecal exams), as well as diagnostic imaging such as X-rays (radiography) and potentially ultrasound. These tools allow veterinarians to investigate internal conditions and formulate appropriate treatment plans.
  • Medical Treatment for Illness and Injury: The hospital is equipped to diagnose and treat a wide range of medical conditions, from common infections and injuries to more complex internal diseases. This includes managing chronic conditions and providing acute care.
  • Surgical Procedures: Like most pet hospitals, Keystone Veterinary Services would offer various surgical services, including routine procedures such as spaying and neutering, as well as more complex soft tissue surgeries. Patient safety and pain management during and after surgery would be a key focus.
  • Dental Care: Dental health is crucial for a pet's overall well-being. Services would typically include professional dental cleanings, extractions, and oral health assessments to prevent and treat periodontal disease.
  • Pain Management: A vital aspect of modern veterinary medicine, pain management focuses on alleviating discomfort for animals suffering from acute injuries, chronic conditions, or post-surgical pain. This may involve pharmaceuticals, and potentially alternative therapies.

A standout feature of Keystone Veterinary Services, as highlighted by client testimonials, is their exceptional approach to palliative care and end-of-life services. One particularly moving review describes how Dr. Collyer provided compassionate and effective palliative care for an 11-year-old border collie with mast cell cancer, significantly extending the dog's quality of life when a previous vet had ceased treatment options. Dr. Collyer's willingness to "extend her quality of life on palliative care" by prescribing additional prednisone, medications, and even herbs demonstrates an integrated and empathetic approach to managing terminal conditions. This commitment to maintaining comfort and dignity for pets in their final stages of life is a profound service that resonates deeply with pet owners.

Furthermore, the offering of in-home euthanasia services is a significant feature that distinguishes Keystone Veterinary Services. This service provides pet owners with the option to say goodbye to their beloved companions in the familiar and comforting environment of their own home, reducing stress for both the pet and the family during a very difficult time. This level of personalized and compassionate care during end-of-life transitions underscores the hospital's dedication to supporting clients through every stage of their pet's life.

While the provided information does not explicitly detail their large animal services, the typical offerings of a "veterinary services" facility in a more rural setting often include care for livestock and horses, in addition to companion animals. The broad term "Veterinary Services" can sometimes imply a capacity for both small and large animal care, but without direct confirmation, it's difficult to elaborate on specific large animal offerings. However, the comprehensive nature of their small animal care and specialized palliative services suggests a well-rounded practice.

Promotional information, gleaned from client experiences, emphasizes Keystone Veterinary Services' commitment to compassionate and individualized care. The positive client testimonial showcases their willingness to go above and beyond, seeking solutions even when other vets might have ceased treatment. This willingness to explore various treatment options, including the use of herbs in conjunction with conventional medication for palliative care, positions them as a forward-thinking practice focused on holistic well-being. The emphasis on extending "quality of life" rather than just life expectancy highlights their patient-centered philosophy.

The review from Dr. Ludwig and Tabitha, who had the opportunity to visit and learn about Keystone Veterinary Services, further corroborates the positive internal environment and professionalism. Their feedback about the office being "clean and very welcoming" and their "great experience to learn more about Keystone Veterinary Services and everything that they offer" suggests that the practice is well-regarded not only by clients but also by fellow professionals in the animal care community, indicating a high standard of operation and a diverse range of services.

In conclusion, Keystone Veterinary Services, operating as a "Pet Hospital" in Shelocta, PA, offers a comprehensive range of veterinary care with a particular strength in compassionate palliative and end-of-life services, including invaluable in-home euthanasia. The facility maintains a clean and welcoming environment, fostering a comfortable experience for pets and owners alike. Their commitment to individualized care, as evidenced by their willingness to explore diverse treatment options for complex cases, and their dedication to supporting pet owners through challenging times, makes them a highly valued veterinary resource in the community. Their broad spectrum of services, combined with their empathetic approach, positions them as a trusted partner for pet health in Shelocta.

When my primary veterinarian closed, I was scrambling to figure out which veterinarian would be a good option for my one Boxer who is timid and the other who is not a fan of strange dogs. Dr. Collyer's office is off the beaten path. It is quiet. The staff are absolutely wonderful and Dr. Collyer, she is phenomenal. Her attention to detail, her care for your pet, her dedication and devotion is hands down the best I have ever had. I was fortunate she was willing to accept my kids as patients and just feel blessed to have her!

They are damn horrible. They don't tell you what they are doing or why. They just take your animal and then charge you for something you didn't know was happening. They tried to charge be 25 dollars to print out a piece of paper. NEVER AGAIN!

I have experienced many different vets in my time as a pet owner and I am so impressed with this Veterinary office. They are very thorough, All the staff is incredibly nice and Dr.Collyer is super smart and takes so much time to explain things. I was not expecting this kind of experience from this tiny vet office in the middle of nowhere PA, but I have been pleasantly surprised!!
