Welcome to Gateway Veterinary Hospital
For pet owners in Portland, Oregon, particularly in the NE Halsey Street area, Gateway Veterinary Hospital, located at 11222 NE Halsey St, presents itself as a "Pet Hospital" with a history of serving the community. Online customer reviews offer a somewhat mixed perspective, highlighting a highly regarded and experienced doctor while also raising concerns about changes in office staff and their interaction with pets and owners. Potential clients should consider these differing viewpoints when evaluating Gateway Veterinary Hospital for their animal healthcare needs.
One enthusiastic early review expresses strong satisfaction with the clinic, stating, "Love this vet clinic." The reviewer mentions that they were recommended to Gateway after their previous veterinarian retired, suggesting a positive reputation within the local veterinary community. They specifically praise "The doc" as "great" and express appreciation for "the feel of the office," indicating a comfortable and welcoming environment. The reviewer also commends the staff, noting, "Everyone I have interacted with has been great and caring with my dog and my cat. Highly recommend!" This positive feedback highlights a combination of a skilled veterinarian, a pleasant clinic atmosphere, and a caring and attentive support staff, leading to a strong recommendation.
Another long-term client provides a more detailed account of their extensive history with Gateway Veterinary Hospital. They mention having been a client for a significant period, starting with their cat Samson, who has since passed, and continuing with other cats and their dog Pixie for the past six years. This longevity indicates a sustained level of trust and satisfaction over many years. The review provides insight into the ongoing care for their dog Pixie, who is being evaluated for mild seizures. The reviewer notes the doctor's proactive approach, including trying CBD drops initially and then transitioning to medication, and specifically mentions, "The doctor called back after leaving a message. He is a great doctor." This highlights the doctor's attentiveness and willingness to communicate with pet owners. The reviewer also praises the staff's patience, stating, "I call a lot and they don’t seem to mind. this day they were amazing.." This further reinforces the positive impression of a caring and accommodating team.
However, a more recent review presents a significant shift in sentiment, indicating a decline in the overall client experience. The reviewer begins by stating, "Not so much Anymore!!!" and revises their previous 5-star rating down to 2 stars. While they maintain their positive opinion of the veterinarian, saying, "The doctor is amazing. I’ve had him since 2002 with all my animals," their negative experience stems from changes in the office staff. They note, "They have new people in the office, even a nurse. I don’t recommend them." The reviewer then shares a concerning anecdote about a recent visit, stating, "Long story short they did not treat my fur baby good at all. They didn’t listen to what I said about putting anything around her neck after having a harness and leash already on her. My dog will not go in that office without me ever. I will go for the doctor but I will not hand over my dog to anyone. It’s a long story not going to get into it but it was not a good day for my dog very unnecessary." This detailed account suggests a serious breakdown in communication and a disregard for the owner's instructions regarding their dog's handling, leading to a negative and distressing experience for the pet. The reviewer's strong reaction and reluctance to leave their dog with the new staff highlight a significant concern about the level of care provided by the newer personnel.
Based on these customer reviews, the environment of Gateway Veterinary Hospital in Portland, OR, has seemingly undergone changes. While initial impressions were of a welcoming office with a great doctor and caring staff, more recent feedback suggests potential issues with new office personnel and a new nurse who may not be providing the same level of attentive and sensitive care. The long-standing positive regard for the doctor remains, indicating a continuity of medical expertise. However, the recent negative experience points to a potential disconnect between the doctor's approach and the practices of the newer support staff, which could impact the overall client experience and the comfort level of pet owners leaving their animals in their care.
The services offered at Gateway Veterinary Hospital likely include a range of general veterinary care, such as routine check-ups, vaccinations, and management of illnesses. The mention of a puppy being treated for potential seizures and the use of CBD and prescription medication suggests diagnostic and treatment capabilities for various medical conditions. The surgical history is not detailed in these reviews, but it is reasonable to assume that a general veterinary hospital would offer some surgical procedures, at least for routine cases like spaying and neutering. The grooming services are not mentioned. The long-term relationships with clients indicate a continuity of care over the years. However, the recent negative review raises concerns about the quality of handling and care provided by the newer staff during routine procedures or examinations.
Several features of Gateway Veterinary Hospital can be identified from the reviews. The presence of a highly regarded and experienced doctor who has been serving the community since at least 2002 is a significant feature. The initial positive feedback regarding a welcoming office environment and caring staff was also a feature, although the recent review suggests this may have changed. The willingness of the doctor to communicate with pet owners, such as calling back after a message, is a positive aspect. However, the recent issue of staff not listening to owner instructions and potentially causing distress to a pet is a concerning negative feature. The contrast between the long-term positive experiences with the doctor and the recent negative experience with the new staff highlights a potential inconsistency in the quality of care depending on the personnel involved.
The provided reviews do not contain any specific information about promotional offers at Gateway Veterinary Hospital. Veterinary clinics sometimes offer introductory discounts for new clients or wellness plans that bundle routine services at a discounted rate. To learn about any current promotions, local pet owners in Portland are encouraged to contact Gateway Veterinary Hospital directly at (503) 253-2142 or +1 503-253-2142. They can inquire about their service fees and any special offers that might be available.
In conclusion, Gateway Veterinary Hospital in Portland, Oregon, offers the expertise of a well-regarded and long-experienced doctor. While past clients have praised the welcoming environment and caring staff, a recent review indicates potential concerns about the handling of pets by newer office personnel. This suggests that while the medical expertise may remain strong, the overall client experience and the level of trust in the support staff may be variable. Local pet owners considering Gateway Veterinary Hospital should weigh the positive long-term reputation of the doctor against the recent negative feedback regarding the new staff to make an informed decision about their pet's care.

Mar 07, 2025 · Meg DanceI have been going to this Vet for so long. First with my kitty Samson. He passed long ago. Then with other cats. With my dog Pixie for 6 years. In the middle of figuring out what is wrong with Pixie. Believes Pixie is having mild seizures. We first tried CBD drops but had to bump her up to medication once a day. The doctor called back after leaving a message. He is a great doctor. I call a lot and they don’t seem to mind. this day they were amazing.. Not so much Anymore!!! I changing my review from 5 to 2. The doctor is amazing. I’ve had him since 2002 with all my animals. They have new people in the office, even a nurse. I don’t recommend them. Long story short they did not treat my fur baby good at all. They didn’t listen to what I said about putting anything around her neck after having a harness and leash already on her. My dog will not go in that office without me ever. I will go for the doctor but I will not hand over my dog to anyone. It’s a long story not going to get into it but it was not a good day for my dog very unnecessary.
Sep 10, 2024 · Kim HuntThe doctor is super experienced and the front desk lady is super friendly and accommodating. The price is very reasonable. Instead of recommending unnecessary tests, the doctor actually works with you to strategize the treatment to reduce the cost! Highly recommend!
Jan 15, 2025 · Yanci WuMOST AFFORDABLE vet clinic in Portland! 💯 Trust me, I spent 4 hours on research and called 8 places and looked at 12 animal hospitals/clinics in the city (from large hospitals with multiple locations to small clinics to specialty holistic places). My 3 year old pup was due for vaccines and annual wellness exam. I got quotes from other places ranging $250-600 - insanity! Gateways’s rates (quoted by Alyssa on the phone who took the time to answer all my questions) were almost too good to be true after all the other quotes. But the reviews were also better than most other animal hospitals. So we scheduled (for 2 days later, no wait either) and went! Just finished our exam with Dr. Dahlquist and assistant Lynn, who took the best care of us. Dr. Dahlquist was hilarious, gentle, caring and really good with keeping my anxious pup calm. This was the first time getting shots and drawing blood was no big deal - Milo didn’t even wince. The whole exam took about 30 minutes. No one rushed us. The whole staff was friendly. The hospital was clean. Our questions were answered. We even got free treats and goodies to go. SWEET DEAL! Our entire bill was just over $100 for everything including vaccines. So happy we found this place! We are now big fans of Gateway Veterinary Hospital and will be recommending it to all others.
