I first used Dog and Cat Dentist for my 4lb soul dog Pippa almost a decade ago. She was a little senior at that point and I was terrified of putting her under for cleaning and extractions. Dr. Tsugawa and his team were incredibly competent and professional. You absolutely pay the premium for the level of care but I would have spent any amount of money to be sure she was safe. Fast forward to present day and we somehow ended up with an even tinier biewer (2.5lbs) with the smallest mouth ever and liver issues. Our normal vet didn’t even have the proper equipment to do his dentals. We’ve been to Dr. Tsugawa twice for Dougal - last year to remove retained adult canines (he kept his very sharp lil puppy canines) and cleaning. Came back this year for 16 more extractions and cleaning. Dougal had a seizure last year after the dental which was scary but didn’t seem to cause any long term issues. Dr. Tsugawa did additional testing this year because of that and I was really surprised this year how quickly he recovered this time around. And again yes.. this type of specialized care is very expensive but we are so lucky to have actual dentistry certified veterinarians available.

Welcome to Dog and Cat Dentist, Inc.
Dog and Cat Dentist, Inc., located at 9599 Jefferson Blvd, Culver City, CA 90232, USA, is a highly specialized "Pet Hospital" focusing exclusively on veterinary dentistry and oral surgery. For pet owners in Los Angeles and beyond, this facility offers an unparalleled level of expertise in a critical, yet often overlooked, aspect of pet health. You can contact them at (424) 373-5002 or +1 424-373-5002.
Unlike general veterinary practices that may offer basic dental cleanings, Dog and Cat Dentist, Inc. is a dedicated specialty clinic with board-certified veterinary dentists. This distinction is crucial, as it signifies a higher level of training, experience, and specialized equipment to handle the most complex and delicate oral health issues in dogs and cats. The testimonials from satisfied clients underscore the competence and professionalism found at this unique veterinary center.
Dog and Cat Dentist, Inc. operates within a multi-specialty veterinary center, ensuring access to a broader range of resources and collaborative care when needed. The facility is equipped with state-of-the-art dental equipment, specifically designed for veterinary patients of all sizes, including "even tinier" pets with "the smallest mouth ever," as noted by a client. This specialized equipment is essential for precise diagnostics and successful treatment of intricate oral conditions.
The environment is professional and designed to support the demanding nature of specialized dental procedures, which often require general anesthesia. The focus on patient safety, particularly concerning anesthesia for "senior" pets or those with "liver issues," indicates a meticulously controlled and monitored environment. The clinic's commitment to safety and optimal outcomes is further reinforced by their AAHA (American Animal Hospital Association) accreditation, which means they adhere to rigorous standards in patient care, pain management, and surgery.
Despite the highly specialized nature of their work, the practice strives to create a warm and caring atmosphere. Clients consistently highlight the professional and communicative demeanor of Dr. Tsugawa and his team, fostering trust and alleviating anxieties related to complex procedures.
Dog and Cat Dentist, Inc. provides a full scope of advanced veterinary dentistry and oral surgery services. Their specialization allows them to address a wide range of oral health issues that might be beyond the capabilities of a general veterinary practice. Their services include:
- Routine Dental Cleaning and Oral Exams: While they specialize in complex cases, they also provide comprehensive oral health assessments and professional cleaning under anesthesia. This includes full mouth radiographs, essential for identifying issues below the gum line.
- Endodontics: This branch of dentistry focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the dental pulp (the innermost layer of the tooth), including root canal therapy to save fractured or infected teeth, thus avoiding extraction.
- Periodontology: Addressing diseases of the structures supporting the teeth, such as gums and bone. This includes advanced periodontal therapy and surgery to manage severe gum disease.
- Orthodontics: Correcting abnormal bites (malocclusions) and misaligned teeth. This can involve procedures to improve comfort and function, such as "doggie braces" if caught early.
- Prosthodontics: The restoration of teeth with prosthetics like crowns to restore function and protect damaged teeth.
- Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology: Utilizing advanced imaging techniques, such as digital dental X-rays, to accurately diagnose conditions of the teeth, jaws, and surrounding structures.
- Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery: Performing complex surgical procedures, including:
- Complex Tooth Extractions: For severely diseased or damaged teeth that cannot be saved.
- Jaw Fracture Repair: Addressing broken jaws, often caused by trauma or severe periodontal disease, as seen in the case of the cat "Thomas." They aim for non-invasive techniques where possible.
- Oral Tumor and Cancer Removal: Surgical excision of growths or tumors in the mouth, often requiring specialized reconstructive techniques.
- Oronasal Fistula Repair: Correcting abnormal openings between the mouth and nasal cavity.
- Oral Medicine: Diagnosis and treatment of non-surgical oral conditions, including infections and inflammatory diseases.
- Anesthesia Management: Given that most dental procedures require anesthesia, Dog and Cat Dentist, Inc. places a strong emphasis on individualized anesthesia protocols, continuous monitoring, and pain management, particularly for high-risk patients.
Dog and Cat Dentist, Inc. possesses several key features that make it a highly sought-after practice for specialized pet dental care:
- Board-Certified Veterinary Dentists: This is arguably their most significant distinguishing feature. Dr. Tsugawa, a VMD and Diplomate of the American Veterinary Dental College (AVDC), represents the highest level of specialization in veterinary dentistry. This ensures that pets receive care from veterinarians who have undergone extensive advanced training and rigorous examinations specifically in dental and oral health.
- Specialized Equipment for All Sizes: Their ability to handle "even tinier" patients with unique anatomical challenges, and the presence of appropriate equipment for such cases, demonstrates their comprehensive capability.
- Emphasis on Patient Safety, Especially Anesthesia: Recognizing the concerns pet owners have about anesthesia, particularly for older or medically compromised pets, they prioritize meticulous pre-anesthetic evaluation, customized anesthesia plans, and continuous monitoring during procedures. The swift recovery of "Dougal" after multiple extractions, despite a previous seizure, points to their careful management.
- Thorough Communication and Follow-up: Clients consistently praise the detailed explanations provided by Dr. Tsugawa and his team, ensuring all questions are answered. The proactive follow-up, even on weekends, as demonstrated with "Thomas" the cat after jaw surgery, builds immense trust and confidence.
- Comprehensive Treatment Plans: They don't just address immediate issues; they develop customized and comprehensive treatment plans that consider the pet's overall health and long-term well-being.
- Focus on Pain Management: Both during and after procedures, pain management is a priority, contributing to a more comfortable recovery for the pets.
The primary "promotion" for Dog and Cat Dentist, Inc. comes from its reputation for excellence and the undeniable value of specialized care. While the services are described as "very expensive" or "premium," clients readily acknowledge that "you absolutely pay the premium for the level of care," and "I would have spent any amount of money to be sure she was safe." This highlights that the value they provide—safety, expertise, and positive outcomes—justifies the cost for those seeking the best for their pets.
Their status as the "only board-certified veterinary dentists in Los Angeles" further reinforces their unique selling proposition. Testimonials also imply that primary care veterinarians often refer complex dental cases to them, indicating a strong professional reputation within the veterinary community.
The success stories of pets with severe conditions like a broken jaw or numerous extractions, and their subsequent full recovery, serve as powerful endorsements. The dedication to follow-up, even outside of regular hours, contributes significantly to client confidence and word-of-mouth referrals. They also accept payment options like CareCredit, which can help manage the cost of specialized procedures.
In conclusion, Dog and Cat Dentist, Inc. is a highly specialized "Pet Hospital" that fills a vital niche in veterinary care. It provides advanced, meticulous, and compassionate dental and oral surgical services, ensuring that pets receive the highest possible standard of care for their oral health, even in the most challenging cases.

Nov 25, 2024 · Christina L.When our 2 year old cat Thomas mysteriously broke his jaw in two places we were referred to Dog and Cat dentist by our emergency vet. A little persistence secured us an urgent appointment with Dr. Tsugawa. I was very impressed with Dr. Tsugawa’s manner and knowledge as we worked through Thomas’s injury together. He made sure all our questions were answered as he determined a conservative approach that also addressed the seriousness of the injury. After surgery Dr. Tsugawa followed up frequently (even on weekends) to ensure Thomas was healing well. Six months on and Thomas is in great condition. Thank you Dr. Tsugawa and the team at Dog and Cat dentist.
Aug 13, 2024 · Brian BabbI am so happy with this clinic. The service is impeccable (from Dr Tsugawa and the staff). Dr Tsugawa is so communicative. When I had a question, he called or Emailed right away. My cat had four teeth pulled, and after surgery, was able to eat canned food right away without needing medication. They also knew I'd be waiting in the lobby (for an Uber home) so they scheduled us first, in advance. The clinic is clean and run well and there's good coffee and comfortable chairs in the lobby. The procedure could have been done at a regular vet but the cost was worth the expertise and sense of safety. Dr Tsugawa rocks.
Nov 01, 2024 · Gigi SanchezJust want to express our gratitude for Dr. Winer at Dog and Cat Dentist! We've had to bring in our older cat a couple times for tooth extractions, and once for a more complex surgery, and each time our experience has been really lovely and he's recovered quickly. Dr. Winer is great and we also really appreciate her policy on offering rechecks to make sure he's healing well afterwards. We're grateful we found this place because we are always pretty nervous bringing him to a new vet, and they've taken really good care of him here. Thank you thank you!
Jul 17, 2024 · Hannah LeitchI find myself at a loss for words when trying to express the immense gratitude I have towards Dr. Anson Tsugawa and his wonderful assistant Fabian. My journey with them began amidst a time of great distress, following an unfortunate incident with another veterinarian that left my beloved dog in need of urgent care. From the moment I stepped into Dr. Tsugawa's practice, I was enveloped in a sense of calm and reassurance. His patience, thoroughness, and unparalleled knowledge instantly put me at ease. Despite the trauma my pet and I had previously endured, Dr. Tsugawa's unwavering kindness and expertise gave me hope for a brighter future. When the time came for my dog's dental anesthesia procedure, I could not have asked for a more seamless experience. Fabian, with his remarkable compassion and genuine warmth, treated my pet as if she were his own. It was evident that he was not only knowledgeable but deeply dedicated to ensuring her well being. As Dr. Tsugawa performed the surgery, I was comforted by his regular updates, which served as a testament to his professionalism and care. Even during the procedure, he took the time to reassure me that everything was going smoothly, providing me with much needed peace of mind while I waited for hours in their lobby to be close to my baby girl. What truly sets Dr. Tsugawa and Fabian apart is their unparalleled level of dedication. Their commitment to my dog Zoe's recovery extended far beyond the operating room, with Dr. Tsugawa checking in regularly to ensure she was on the path to healing. Dr. Tsugawa also checked in throughout the weekend via text when he was not working at the clinic to show his compassion and care. Zoe recovered quickly and is now a happy dog again! :) In a world where genuine kindness and empathy can sometimes feel scarce, Dr. Tsugawa and Fabian are truly angels. Their exemplary care has not only restored my faith in continuing dental care for my dog but has also ensured that my dog will enjoy good internal health for years to come. To Dr. Tsugawa and Fabian: words cannot adequately express my gratitude for the exceptional care you have provided. From the bottom of my heart, thank you for going above and beyond to ensure the well-being of my beloved Zoe. Los Angeles is truly fortunate to have you as a veterinarian dental provider, and I wholeheartedly recommend your practice to anyone in need of dental veterinary care. This review is written with my deepest appreciation. Thank you so much!
