Dr. Kate and her staff treated my horse that had been diagnosed with kissing spine. I had considered putting him down as he was dangerous to ride and in considerable pain. After his evaluation at Denali I was encouraged that he would recover and become the horse I had hoped to have. I will admit I was skeptical. Fast forward 3 months and my horse is coming along beautifully! He is under saddle and we are both happy! I can’t say enough about the care he received there.

- Kissing Spines
- Shivering
- Stringhalt
- Sleep Deprivation
- And more complex or less understood issues causing pain or affecting performance.
Our team is well-versed in both traditional veterinary medicine and ongoing wellness care options. We are committed to preserving your horse's best physical condition for an extended period. Key Features and Expertise
One of the key features of Denali Equine is our commitment to looking beyond the obvious. We take the time to understand the complete picture of your horse's health, considering biomechanics and how different aspects of their life and work interact. Our team includes experienced veterinarians like Dr. Kate Workman, who is known for her insightful approach and ability to diagnose and treat complex conditions. Customer reviews highlight her knowledge, patience, and thoroughness.
For instance, one customer shared their experience with a horse diagnosed with kissing spine, a condition where the spinous processes of the vertebrae are too close or touching, causing pain and limiting movement. This horse was considered for euthanasia but, after evaluation and treatment at Denali Equine, recovered beautifully and returned to work under saddle. This attests to the expertise in diagnosing and managing conditions like kissing spine, which requires a comprehensive understanding of equine anatomy and biomechanics.
Another review praised the incredibly knowledgeable and communicative approach of Dr. Workman, noting the thoroughness of the examination and the attention paid to the horse's history. This level of detailed care is a hallmark of Denali Equine.
Understanding Kissing Spine in Horses
Since a customer review specifically mentioned "kissing spine," it's important to elaborate on this condition. Kissing spine, or overriding spinous processes, is a common cause of back pain in horses. In a normal horse, the spinous processes (bony projections on vertebrae) are evenly spaced, allowing for back flexion and extension. With kissing spines, these processes are too close or touching, which can reduce mobility and cause pain. Symptoms can range from subtle performance issues to more obvious signs like pain on palpation, reluctance to be saddled, or bucking.
Diagnosis typically involves a combination of clinical signs and X-rays. Treatment options vary depending on the severity and can include conservative management (muscle relaxants, anti-inflammatories, physical therapy), injections, or surgery. Denali Equine's success in treating a horse with this condition, who was initially thought to be beyond help, underscores their expertise in this area.

May 18, 2024 · Laurie ReillyAbsolutely astounded over every aspect of our vet appt. earlier this wk. Dr. Workman was incredibly knowledgeable, patient, communicative &, most remarkably, listened to our horse’s entire history of issues. I can’t recall having ever had a vet appt so thorough. (And, unfortunately, we’ve had many!) Thrilled beyond words to have found her!!
May 03, 2024 · Libby LutherMy 2 year old horse came up lame on his right front leg and Dr. Workman came to see him. He was diagnosed with a fracture. It was a really scared diagnosis for me and we brought him to Denali equine to heal, rehab and recover and the care he has received is exceptional! He has been spoiled and and happy despite being on stall rest. He is on the mend thanks to Dr. Workman and her amazing team. She has all of the therapies to help augment healing (PEMF, treadmill, ect) My horse is 100% sound and resuming light activity, turnout and will have a full recovery. I cannot recommend Denali Equine enough and Dr. Workman is so knowledgeable across different disciplines and always does what is in the best interest of the horse. I would not trust anyone else with my horse!!
May 28, 2021 · Mariah MostardiDenali Equine is the place to go if you need your horse rehabbed. They are professional, caring and friendly. I didn't have a moments concern while my horse was in their care. They brought him back from a career ending and possibly life ending injury and returned him to me sound, sane and in better shape than before his injury. I can't say enough good things about Kate, Mike, Juli, and the rest of the staff at Denali Equine!
