My cat was dying from antifreeze poisoning, as what we can tell. This is what they told me they only, take their customers even for emergencies only. What kind of veterinarian are you that you cannot fit in your busy schedule at 8 o’clock in the morning cat that has been poisoned? How did you become a veterinary clinic? The receptionist is rude as hell. I hope every everyone of those people that work there go to hell. Because that’s where they belong. Animals have nothing but unconditional love for a human being and to be treated like this? He literally died a half hour later in my arms, I felt the death rattle, and his last breath. So thank you Crago for not even taking a moment to look at my cat and see if that’s what it was.

Welcome to Crago Veterinary Center: Dr. J. Wendy Smith DVM
Crago Veterinary Center, featuring the dedicated work of Dr. J. Wendy Smith DVM, is a well-established veterinary practice serving the Youngstown, Ohio area. Located at 6712 Market St, Youngstown, OH 44512, USA, the center has been a part of the community for over 40 years, constantly striving for medical excellence in the care of companion animals. Dr. J. Wendy Smith, a local graduate of Cardinal Mooney High School and The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine, has been with Crago Veterinary Center since her graduation in 2003, focusing her practice on small companion animals. The center can be reached at (330) 758-4529 or +1 330-758-4529.
The environment at Crago Veterinary Center, as reflected in various client testimonials, is characterized by a strong emphasis on compassion, empathy, and a family-like atmosphere. Despite the challenging nature of veterinary medicine, particularly during distressful situations, clients consistently describe the staff as "compassionate, empathetic, and treated us like family." This suggests a warm and supportive setting designed to ease the anxieties of both pets and their owners. The clinic aims to provide a reassuring space where owners feel understood during difficult times. While specific details about the waiting area or examination rooms are not extensively available online, the repeated mention of the staff's kindness and the feeling of being "understood completely" imply a facility that prioritizes comfort and clear communication. The commitment to "medical excellence" also points to a clean, organized, and professionally maintained clinic, ensuring a safe and hygienic environment for patient care.
Crago Veterinary Center, under the care of veterinarians like Dr. J. Wendy Smith and other experienced professionals such as Dr. Green and Dr. Scott, offers a wide range of services primarily for small companion animals (dogs and cats). Their aim is to provide thorough and personalized care, addressing both routine wellness and complex medical conditions. Key services include:
Wellness Exams and Preventive Care: Regular check-ups are fundamental to their approach, including comprehensive physical examinations, preventative health screenings, and tailored vaccination protocols to maintain optimal health and detect potential issues early.
Diagnostics: While specific in-house laboratory or imaging capabilities are not detailed in the provided information, a well-established clinic like Crago Veterinary Center typically offers various diagnostic tests, such as blood work, fecal analysis, and potentially X-rays, to accurately assess a pet's health and diagnose illnesses. Dr. Green is noted for "get to the bottom of any issues your pet may have," indicating thorough diagnostic processes.
Internal Medicine: Diagnosis and management of various internal diseases and chronic conditions, with an emphasis on developing individualized care plans.
Surgical Procedures: While specific surgical offerings are not listed, most full-service veterinary centers provide common surgeries such as spaying, neutering, and minor soft tissue procedures. For more complex cases, they may refer to specialty hospitals.
Dental Care: Services aimed at maintaining oral hygiene and addressing dental diseases, which are crucial for overall pet health.
Pain Management: Strategies and treatments to alleviate pain in pets, improving their comfort and quality of life.
Microchipping: A service for permanent identification, greatly increasing the chances of reuniting lost pets with their owners.
Nutritional Counseling: Guidance on appropriate diets and feeding practices to support a pet's health at all life stages and for specific medical needs.
Emergency Services: The center states it offers "Emergency Services." However, it is crucial to note that based on a highly negative customer review, their policy for emergencies appears to be limited primarily to existing clients. This means that if a pet is not an established patient, even in a critical, life-threatening situation, they may not be able to provide immediate care. Pet owners should confirm their specific emergency policy and consider alternative 24-hour emergency veterinary hospitals if their pet is not a regular patient of Crago Veterinary Center.
Crago Veterinary Center is characterized by several key features that contribute to its reputation (as evidenced by positive reviews, while acknowledging the negative one):
Profound Compassion and Empathy: Multiple positive reviews highlight the staff's "compassion" and "empathy," especially during challenging moments for pet owners. The feeling of being "treated like family" and having the staff "understand completely what we were going through" is a recurring theme, suggesting a deep commitment to the emotional well-being of clients.
Experienced and Dedicated Veterinarians: Dr. J. Wendy Smith is specifically named and praised for her care, with clients noting her long-standing dedication to their "fur babies." Other veterinarians like Dr. Green and Dr. Scott also receive commendations for their thoroughness, gentleness, and ability to explain care plans clearly.
Personalized Pet Care: The clinic excels at providing individualized attention, with staff members cuddling pets "like their own" and ensuring "Precious Fancy Pants" receives loving care. This personal touch fosters a sense of trust and comfort.
Strong Client Communication: The veterinarians are noted for explaining "everything to you" and helping owners "understand the care plan goals needed." This commitment to informing and reassuring pet owners is a significant strength.
Long-Standing Community Presence: Having served the Youngstown area for over 40 years, Crago Veterinary Center has built a strong foundation of trust and loyalty within the community, often treating multiple generations of pets from the same families.
Focus on Established Clients for Emergencies: While this policy is a point of concern for potential new clients in distress, it suggests a prioritization of continuity of care and the well-being of their existing patient base during emergency situations. This policy necessitates that pet owners understand and plan for emergency care needs.
Crago Veterinary Center's "promotional" efforts seem to be primarily built on its long-standing reputation for compassionate and competent care, leading to strong word-of-mouth referrals. While specific discounts or widespread advertising campaigns are not readily apparent from the provided information, their value proposition is centered on:
Commitment to Exceptional Care: The overwhelming positive sentiment in reviews (aside from the noted emergency policy issue) highlights their dedication to providing "exceptional care for the pets" and ensuring "the pet owner is well informed & put their minds at ease." This quality of care is their primary draw.
Experienced Team: Highlighting the expertise and compassionate nature of veterinarians like Dr. J. Wendy Smith and her colleagues serves as a strong endorsement for potential clients seeking reliable care.
Building Relationships: The focus on treating clients "like family" creates a loyal customer base, leading to long-term relationships and consistent referrals. This organic growth through positive client experiences is a powerful form of promotion.
Acceptance of Pet Insurance: Like many modern veterinary clinics, Crago Veterinary Center likely accepts pet insurance, which can help clients manage the financial aspect of unexpected veterinary care. While not a direct discount, it makes care more accessible.
Community Engagement: Dr. J. Wendy Smith's participation in local volunteer programs and welcoming students for job shadowing experiences reflects a commitment to the community and the veterinary profession, subtly promoting the center's values.
It is important for potential clients, especially regarding emergencies, to directly contact the clinic and understand their specific policies to ensure their pet's needs can be met. However, for routine and ongoing care for established pets, Crago Veterinary Center maintains a reputation for being a deeply caring and professional pet hospital.

Dec 01, 2023 · Lori DaughertySadly I had to bring a pet in distress here, but everyone was compassionate, empathetic, and treated us like family. It was a difficult time for myself and my wife, and I just felt as though everyone here understood completely what we were going through. The world needs more veterinary centers like this.
Jul 24, 2022 · K_TechDr Dastoli does not listen to people when they say what they want checked and goes on her own feelings. After thousands of dollars with no diagnosis and an extremely sick kitten I have to find someone else to figure out what she couldn’t. Don’t take your animals here if they are sick!!!
