The vet office I worked at was partnered with this company, if I could give 0 stars I would. Customer service is terrible, I can’t say how many times we have been left on hold for 30+ minutes. Same hold times for clients as well. Countless times we would order medications from them to dispense from our clinic, and medications would be haphazardly thrown into a box, not bagged or protected, no bubble wrap or anything. They would do this with vaccines too! Also, their shipping times have always been horrid. Hopefully you don’t need life saving medication in a timely manner. You would be lucky if you got contacted about an issue with your order, too. Once they found out we were switching online pharmacies they stopped responding to our emails, which were addressing concerns about clients not being able to log in to order their pets medications. So unprofessional.

Welcome to Covetrus

While a platform might categorize it under "Pet Hospital," it is essential to understand that Covetrus, with its primary address at 12 Mountfort St, Portland, ME 04101, USA, does not function as a traditional veterinary hospital providing direct patient care. Instead, Covetrus is a global animal-health technology and services company. Its core business revolves around empowering veterinary practices worldwide with a comprehensive suite of products, technology, and services designed to streamline their operations, enhance patient care, and improve business outcomes. In essence, Covetrus serves veterinarians and their clinics, acting as a crucial link in the animal health supply chain and technology infrastructure.

Given its role as a business-to-business (B2B) provider, the "environment" of Covetrus itself is not a patient-facing clinical setting. Instead, it operates from corporate offices, distribution centers, and technology hubs globally. The Portland, ME address likely serves as one of their key administrative or operational centers. For veterinary practices interacting with Covetrus, the "environment" primarily involves their online ordering platforms, various software interfaces, and customer service channels (phone: (877) 999-2838, mobile phone: +1 877-999-2838), along with interactions with direct sales or support representatives. These interactions are designed to be efficient and professional, facilitating the ordering of supplies, management of software, and resolution of any issues that may arise. However, it is crucial to acknowledge that customer reviews, as provided, sometimes point to significant challenges within this operational environment, specifically regarding customer service hold times, responsiveness, and order fulfillment issues.

The services and goods for sale by Covetrus are extensive and cater directly to the diverse needs of veterinary professionals. These include:

  • Pharmaceuticals and Vaccines: Covetrus offers a vast catalog of both branded and generic veterinary medications, including prescription drugs, over-the-counter products, and a wide range of essential vaccines for various animal species.
  • Compounded Medications: They provide specialized services for creating customized medications. This includes preparing drugs in specific dosages, forms (e.g., liquids, transdermal gels), and flavors to suit individual pets' unique needs, which is particularly beneficial for animals that are difficult to medicate with standard formulations.
  • Consumables and Supplies: A comprehensive array of everyday clinic essentials is available, ranging from bandages, sutures, and sterile gloves to diagnostic tests, infection-control products, and a wide selection of parasiticides.
  • Pet Nutrition: Covetrus distributes various leading brands of veterinary prescription diets designed for specific health conditions, as well as general wellness pet food.
  • Equipment: They offer a broad selection of veterinary equipment, encompassing small and large equipment, laboratory products, surgical instruments, imaging systems (like X-ray and ultrasound), and related repair services. This includes items from anesthesia machines and autoclaves to dental units and patient monitors.
  • Online Pharmacy Solutions: Covetrus provides veterinary practices with their own branded online storefronts (e.g., Covetrus vRxPro®) for convenient home delivery of medications and products directly to pet owners. This service aims to allow practices to maintain client relationships and capture revenue from online sales, offering a competitive edge against other online retailers.
  • Practice Management Software: They develop and support comprehensive software solutions (such as Covetrus Pulse®, Avimark®, and Impromed®) that help veterinary clinics manage appointments, electronic medical records, billing, inventory, and overall workflow. These systems are designed to improve operational efficiency.
  • Client Communication Tools: Solutions like Covetrus Comms (formerly Rapport) enable automated appointment reminders, two-way messaging, online scheduling, and pet parent portals to enhance client engagement, improve compliance with treatment plans, and reduce no-shows.
  • Business Services: Covetrus offers various services designed to help practices with financial management, operational performance optimization, and even support for new clinic builds or remodels.
  • Diagnostic Services Integration: While not operating their own labs, they facilitate access to and integration with external diagnostic services, aiming for faster and more accurate results for veterinary practices.

The key features of Covetrus are grounded in its ambitious goal to be a holistic partner for veterinary practices. Prominent features often highlighted by the company include:

  • Integrated Platform: The "Covetrus Platform" aims to connect various facets of practice management – from client engagement and prescription fulfillment to inventory management and financial services – into a single, streamlined ecosystem. This integration is designed to improve workflow efficiency and overall productivity for veterinary teams.
  • Extensive Product Portfolio: With access to over 22,000 products, including a vast array of pharmaceuticals, supplies, and equipment, Covetrus strives to be a single, comprehensive source for a majority of a veterinary clinic's operational needs.
  • Focus on Technology and Innovation: Covetrus actively invests in technology-enabled solutions, including AI features within their software platforms (like Covetrus Pulse's AI capabilities), to help practices run more effectively and adapt to modern demands, aiming to save time on administrative tasks.
  • Global Reach and Collective Buying Power: As a global company, Covetrus leverages its scale and the VetSuite network to potentially provide competitive pricing and access to a wide range of products for its member practices.
However, as extensively illuminated by the provided customer reviews and publicly available information, the execution of certain operational features has presented significant challenges for their clients. The first review, from a vet office employee, critically points out:
  • "Customer service is terrible, I can’t say how many times we have been left on hold for 30+ minutes. Same hold times for clients as well." This suggests a significant failing in customer support accessibility and timely problem resolution, a critical feature for any B2B service provider.
  • "Countless times we would order medications from them to dispense from our clinic, and medications would be haphazardly thrown into a box, not bagged or protected, no bubble wrap or anything. They would do this with vaccines too!" This highlights serious concerns about packaging standards and product integrity, which are especially crucial for sensitive and temperature-controlled items like vaccines.
  • "Also, their shipping times have always been horrid. Hopefully you don’t need life saving medication in a timely manner." This indicates significant issues with logistics and reliable, timely delivery, which can have severe consequences for pet health and clinic operations.
  • "You would be lucky if you got contacted about an issue with your order, too. Once they found out we were switching online pharmacies they stopped responding to our emails, which were addressing concerns about clients not being able to log in to order their pets medications. So unprofessional." This points to a lack of proactive communication, poor issue resolution, and potentially unprofessional conduct when a client expresses dissatisfaction or considers switching providers.
The second review further supports concerns related to inventory management and pricing:
  • "I ordered 90 methimazole pills for my cat for $70 but was told because the stock on hand expires in a couple of months they can only ship me 30 pills. The cost for 30 pills is just $5 less. So I will have to order more pills for another $70 in a month, instead of getting my usual 90 pill supply. It’s just a money grab. They should ship me the remaining pills when they get fresh stock." This suggests that inventory management practices, particularly regarding expiration dates, can lead to situations where clients pay disproportionately for smaller quantities, creating perceived financial disadvantage and significant inconvenience for pet owners trying to ensure consistent medication for their animals.
Furthermore, public information reveals that Covetrus has faced legal issues concerning misbranded veterinary prescription drugs. In March 2024, Covetrus' North American subsidiary pleaded guilty to a federal criminal charge of "causing the introduction and delivery of misbranded veterinary prescription drugs into interstate commerce" and was sentenced to probation and agreed to pay over $23 million in criminal fines and forfeitures. This serious incident underscores past compliance issues related to the quality and proper labeling of the pharmaceuticals they distributed, adding another layer of concern to their operational integrity.

In terms of promotional information, Covetrus positions itself as a partner dedicated to "advancing the world of veterinary medicine" and empowering veterinarians. Their marketing materials typically highlight:

  • Empowering Veterinarians: Emphasizing their mission to help veterinary practices build better businesses and focus on animal welfare by providing necessary tools and technologies.
  • Comprehensive Solutions: Promoting their integrated platform that covers various aspects of practice operations, from supply chain management to client engagement and practice management software.
  • Industry Leadership and Scale: Highlighting their global presence, extensive product selection, and collective buying power through networks like VetSuite, often citing their long history in the animal health sector (formed through the merger of Vets First Choice and Henry Schein Animal Health).
  • Innovation: Showcasing their investment in cutting-edge technology, including AI, to improve practice efficiency and patient outcomes.
  • Support and Partnership: While contradicted by some reviews, their stated promotional goal is to be a supportive partner, offering business services and expert guidance to help practices thrive.
They utilize their comprehensive website and various industry channels to communicate these messages, often featuring case studies and insights into how their solutions can benefit veterinary practices. Their phone numbers, (877) 999-2838 and +1 877-999-2838, are consistently provided as primary contact points for inquiries and support. However, it is evident from the provided customer feedback and public records that there have been significant disparities between their promotional messaging and the actual service experience for some of their direct veterinary clients and, consequently, the pet owners whose medications are handled through their systems.

I have had great experiences when using this pharmacy via my vet’s office. My cat recently passed away and it was after his prescription was shipped. I rang them to see if I could seek a refund and spoke to a lovely lady. She offered her condolences and quickly arranged a full refund for me, which I wasn’t expecting as they are unable to resell the item if I return it, which I don’t need to. Once when a prescription delivery was very slow to arrive and I was nearly out of the medicine I rang them and they sent out a new prescription for next day delivery at no charge to me. Amazing service, thank you.

I wish I could give this place a zero. I hope my vet finds another alternative--I paid a lot for shipping a small bottle of ear wash, it has now been seven days and I still haven't received it. UPS tracking shows now it is waiting on USPS who may never pick it up. I asked them to just cancel and I will return, now they want me to pay for the return even the shipping states 3-5 days on their website. DO NOT allow your vet to order. My dog has been waiting on this prescription for a week. I finally called around to other vets to find it in stock.

This is not a convenience. I went on vacay and forgot my dog prescription. I called the vet and they gave me all the prescription info. I paid for 24 hour service and 5 days later I only received 2 of the 4 prescriptions I needed. I called and they said it was the vets problem, but no one informed me there was a problem. So now I have no medicine for my dog that is going blind, and by the time they figure it out I will be back home. This is insane!
