If I could negative stars I would, this vet had me bringing my cat in everyday for enemas. Knowing they wasn’t working and that something else was going on. Finally tells me to take my cat home that it will pass after 4 days of enemas that didn’t do a thing. Then a week or so later, still no movement so they did surgery on him. Luke Bosse said he done the surgery and was not able to get anything out of my cat. My cat was way over sedated and when I picked him up they never gave me any discharge instructions. Thank god I had my sister with me who had been a vet tech. Brought him home and he was so messed up he couldn’t even stand up. He ended up dying in the middle of the night. So my sister took him back to commonwealth to be cremated because the day before I had a bad fall and had to spend the evening in the ER ( which we told Luke about and he didn’t even act like he heard me) my sister came back and told me that they would not cremate him until it was paid for. So after I spent well over $1500.00 for a dead cat now all they was worried about was getting more money. We went back and picked my dead baby up and took him to Stanford animal hospital and had them to do it. Needless to say they will never get another penny off of me and I would not advise anyone to take there animal there. Oh and as it turns out Luke was never even in the surgery , his dad did the surgery.

Welcome to Commonwealth Animal Hospital
Located at 1058 N College St, Harrodsburg, KY 40330, USA, Commonwealth Animal Hospital is a well-established and comprehensive veterinary facility dedicated to serving the Harrodsburg community and surrounding areas. You can reach them by phone at (859) 734-2245 or via mobile at +1 859-734-2245. As a "Pet Hospital," Commonwealth Animal Hospital offers a wide array of veterinary services and related goods, aiming to provide exceptional animal care with genuine heartfelt compassion.
Commonwealth Animal Hospital's philosophy is rooted in providing the highest level of medical care to animals, driven by strong ethical standards. The hospital strives to create a welcoming and comfortable environment for both pets and their owners. Their team is described as "highly trained and caring," working cohesively to ensure a warm and welcoming experience. Reviews from satisfied clients often highlight the staff as "kindest and most professional vets and techs," and "great," indicating a positive and supportive atmosphere.
The facility is equipped with "cutting-edge hospital equipment" and maintains a "clean facility." This commitment to modern technology and hygiene underscores their dedication to providing high-quality medicine. They treat pets as "valued family members," emphasizing the deep bond between humans and animals. This compassionate approach is a core element of their service delivery, aiming to make each visit productive, informative, and pleasing.
Commonwealth Animal Hospital operates with specific hours: Monday to Friday from 7:30 AM to 5:30 PM, and Saturday from 8:00 AM to 12:30 PM. They are closed on Sundays. They also offer extended hours on Tuesdays and Thursdays, staying open until 7:00 PM, to accommodate clients' schedules.
However, an objective review must also address contrasting experiences. One severe negative review details a tragic outcome for a cat undergoing treatment, citing concerns about prolonged ineffective treatments, over-sedation, lack of discharge instructions, and perceived insensitivity regarding payment for cremation after the pet's death. This account also raises serious allegations about misrepresentation of which veterinarian performed a surgery, suggesting a potential breakdown in communication and trust. This contrasting feedback highlights the importance of thorough communication and consistent quality across all aspects of patient care and client interaction.
Commonwealth Animal Hospital provides a comprehensive range of veterinary services to cater to the diverse health needs of pets. Their offerings include:
- Wellness Exams: Routine check-ups are fundamental to preventative care, helping to maintain overall health and detect potential issues early.
- Urgent Care: They are available for urgent care during regular business hours for non-life-threatening conditions, working to "squeeze" in pets between scheduled appointments. For after-hours emergencies, they provide contact information for 24-hour emergency clinics.
- Dentistry and Oral Healthcare: Comprehensive dental services to maintain oral hygiene and address dental diseases.
- Internal Medicine: Diagnosis and treatment for a wide range of complex medical conditions.
- Advanced Care: Including specialized services like Dermatology, EKG, OFA X-ray, Ophthalmology, and Tonopen (for eye pressure measurement).
- Laboratory & Diagnostics: Equipped with an in-house lab for quick results, including CBC, Chemistry Panels, blood parasite screening, urinalysis, and intestinal parasite exams. They also send samples to IDEXX lab for more comprehensive diagnostic tests. They utilize Digital Imaging (X-rays) for thorough assessments.
- Surgery: Performing a wide array of surgical procedures, including elective surgeries like spays, neuters, and dental cleanings, as well as non-routine surgeries such as tumor removals, intestinal surgeries, cystotomies, eye surgeries, oral surgery and extractions, lacerations, and abscesses. Dr. R. Paul Bosse is noted as a talented surgeon performing orthopedic procedures (cruciate ligament repair, patellar luxation repair, fracture plating, external fixation, femoral head osteotomies) and soft-tissue surgeries.
- Genetic Testing: Services such as PennHIP, OFA Elbows, and Cardiac testing are offered, particularly for breeding animals, to ensure healthy genetics are not passed on.
- Pharmacy: Both an on-site and online pharmacy are available for convenient access to medications and pet supplies.
- Behavioral Counseling: Helping pet owners address and manage behavioral issues.
- Nutritional Counseling: Guidance on optimal diets and weight management programs for individual pets.
- Microchipping: To help ensure the safe return of lost pets.
- Holistic Medicine: Offering Acupuncture and herbal medicine as complementary therapies.
- End-of-life care: Providing compassionate support during a pet's final stages.
Commonwealth Animal Hospital prides itself on its team of experienced veterinarians: Dr. R. Paul Bosse DVM, who acquired the hospital in 1994 and has over 30 years of experience with a strong focus on ethical standards and quality medical care, and a specialty in various surgeries. Dr. Luke Bosse DVM, who joined full-time in July 2022, has special interests in diagnostic ultrasound, internal medicine, and emergency/critical care. Dr. Shannon Blair DVM (joined December 2017) focuses on internal medicine and plans for acupuncture certification. Dr. Alex Knetsche DVM (joined April 2023) has special interests in oncology, trauma care, and geriatric medicine. This diverse team brings a wide range of expertise to the practice.
A notable feature, as evidenced by a positive review, is their capability in genetic testing for breeding animals, specifically mentioning PennHIP, OFA Elbows, and Cardiac tests for English Cream Golden Retrievers. This demonstrates their specialized knowledge and equipment for breed-specific health screenings, crucial for responsible breeding practices. The communication regarding updates and wonderful care during such procedures is also highlighted.
The clinic's investment in "cutting-edge hospital equipment" and a "clean facility" underscores their commitment to high standards. Their ability to handle both routine and complex surgical procedures, as well as providing advanced diagnostic capabilities, positions them as a comprehensive care provider.
However, the highly negative review brings to light serious concerns about patient care, communication, and financial transparency. The allegations of over-sedation, lack of discharge instructions, and delayed/problematic cremation payment, coupled with the claim of a different surgeon than stated, point to significant potential issues in patient management, ethical conduct, and client relations. This contrasts sharply with the positive experiences and highlights areas where the clinic may face challenges in consistent service delivery and maintaining trust, particularly in critical situations.
Commonwealth Animal Hospital offers several promotional aspects and financial considerations for its clients:
- Online Pharmacy: They provide an online pharmacy for convenient ordering of medications and pet supplies.
- Low Cost Spay and Neuter Program: The hospital offers a specific low-cost spay and neuter program with clear policies: by appointment only (usually booked a month in advance), rabies vaccine required for all surgeries, applicable for pets 5 years of age and under, and extra charges apply for pets in heat, pregnant, or with cryptorchidism. This program is not for brachycephalic dogs. Prices are stated (e.g., Cat - Female $80, Cat - Male $70, Dog - Female $110, Dog - Male $90, Pit Bulls - $30).
- Pet Insurance Acceptance: Like most veterinarians, they accept pet insurance for unexpected accidents and illnesses, encouraging clients to get their pets insured while healthy.
- Treatment Financing Options: They accept financing solutions like CareCredit and Scratchpay, which can help clients manage large unexpected upfront costs by spacing out payments over time. This offers flexibility for pet owners facing significant veterinary bills.
- Informational Resources: Their website provides informational articles and newsletters (e.g., on grooming, pet emergencies, bathing kittens), which serve as valuable resources for pet owners and indirectly promote the clinic's expertise.
While explicit "first visit" or "referral" discounts are not universally promoted across all available online information, the combination of advanced medical services, a compassionate philosophy (as typically presented), and financial support options aims to attract and retain clients seeking comprehensive and accessible veterinary care.

Feb 11, 2025 · Vanessa SturgillThe staff here is so incredibly thoughtful and caring. Not only did they jump into action in helping me when I acquired a cat with some health problems but they were able to give me all the information i needed to make the best decisions for treatment for my cat. They are so good with reminding when visits and medications are due and even trying to work you in for an emergency. I could not recommend them enough.
Apr 22, 2025 · APoor post surgery discharge, cat died during the night. Was not told how to care for him, what to be aware of,to call if any issues, how to feed,to keep warm,NOTHING. Was pushed for a $1,500.00 surgery the following day. If the cat hadn't died during the night, he certainly would have during the following surgery. He was over sedated and would not have been able to withstand the anesthesia 2 days in a row. The vet is egotistical and unkind and unconcerned. I would recommend Dr Alford in Stanford or Jeffrey Phillips in Lawrenceburg.
Apr 18, 2025 · Penny RoneyCAH staff and veterinarians are wonderful. Dr. Luke has been wonderful with the treatment of our animals. He takes time to understand the issue and address the concerns. The staff at CAH are wonderful and always willing to work with you.
