I normally don’t like to post negative reviews but I will say that the End of Life Care is absolutely HORRENDOUS here! From misdiagnosing my dog (when my dogs weight drops from 150 to 115 that should have flagged something) to once my dog was incapacitated to literally seeming to not care (didn’t even follow up to see how she was doing) and advising to do stupid nonsensical stuff. My dog passed thanks to the help of Comfort Crossing In Home Pet Euthanasia and the crematorium called and said her final weight was 100lbs (was 115 when she went in to see the these guys a week prior). My dog suffered unnecessarily and they should have just said that they can’t handle it and recommend someone that could. These guys are great for basic stuff and smaller animals, but horrible when it comes to large breeds.

Welcome to Columbiana Veterinary Associates

Columbiana Veterinary Associates, located at 41233 Metz Rd, Columbiana, OH 44408, USA, is a well-established Pet Hospital that has been serving the Columbiana community for over 50 years. Originally founded by Dr. Donald Rose in 1949, the practice has a rich history and has continually modernized to keep up with the latest advancements in veterinary medicine. Dr. Brian Urmson, a 1998 graduate of The Ohio State University and Dr. Rose's son, became the sole owner in 2009, continuing the family legacy of dedicated animal care. The clinic operates with a team of two doctors, two registered veterinary technicians, and a supportive client-oriented staff. They can be reached by phone at (330) 482-2967 or via mobile at +1 330-482-2967.

The environment at Columbiana Veterinary Associates is described as professional, client-oriented, and continually updated to incorporate modern veterinary technology. While the original East Palestine office, built in 1949, was closed due to its age, the current facility in Columbiana reflects a commitment to a contemporary and functional space. The clinic is fully computerized and equipped with advanced diagnostic and surgical tools. This includes digital radiography, ultrasonography, and automated anesthesia monitoring. The presence of an in-house laboratory with Zoetis equipment further enhances their diagnostic capabilities, allowing for quicker results. The overall environment aims to provide a high standard of medical care in an efficient and caring manner. The clinic emphasizes a "team approach" and maintaining a "positive work atmosphere," which contributes to a welcoming experience for clients and their pets. Their mission statement highlights providing "the highest quality medical care to our patients and education to our clients," which suggests a focus on creating an informed and collaborative environment.

Columbiana Veterinary Associates offers a comprehensive range of veterinary medical, surgical, and dental care services, primarily for small animals. They also have veterinarians, including Dr. Brian Urmson and Dr. Michael Cunningham, who see exotic animals. Their services are designed to promote responsible pet ownership, preventative health care, and health-related educational opportunities for their clients. Key services include:

  • Preventative and Sick Care: This encompasses routine check-ups, vaccinations, parasite control, and diagnosis and treatment for a wide variety of illnesses and injuries.
  • Medical Services: They provide comprehensive medical management for various conditions, including internal medicine issues.
  • Surgical Services: The clinic boasts up-to-date surgical facilities capable of providing a wide variety of orthopedic, soft tissue, and elective surgeries. They utilize safe anesthetic drugs, including many used in human anesthesia, and monitor each patient carefully during surgery and recovery. They also offer laser surgery, emphasizing its benefits.
  • Dental Care: Comprehensive dental services are provided to ensure good oral health, which is crucial for overall pet well-being.
  • Advanced Diagnostics: Their in-house laboratory facilities include capabilities for blood chemistry, hematology, serology, and parasite testing. They also have digital X-ray capabilities for diagnosing various diseases, including radiographs for Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA) certification. When necessary, they utilize university and specialized veterinary laboratories for more specialized diagnostics.
  • Exotic Animal Care: A distinguishing feature is their provision of care for exotic animals, expanding their service reach beyond traditional companion animals.
  • Prescription Medications and Diets: They offer a range of medications and prescription diets, available through their in-house pharmacy and an online pharmacy (Covetrus).
  • Client Education: They are committed to providing health-related educational opportunities for their clients, with access to a wealth of information about pet health and behavior.
  • Referrals to Specialists: For highly specialized diagnostics or treatment, they consult with and refer to specialists in Akron, Pittsburgh, Cleveland, and Columbus, ensuring pets receive the best possible care even for complex cases.

A notable feature of Columbiana Veterinary Associates is its extensive history and continuous modernization, reflecting a commitment to staying current with advancements in veterinary medicine. The clinic's use of modern equipment like digital radiography, ultrasonography, and laser surgery underscores its dedication to providing advanced care. The team-oriented approach and commitment to continual education among staff members are key features, ensuring high-quality and current medical practices. The clinic aims for efficiency in service delivery while maintaining a caring attitude. Dr. Brian Urmson's local roots and long-standing presence in the community contribute to a sense of trust and familiarity for many clients. The clinic's staff is largely composed of local community members with extensive experience as veterinary assistants, bringing a strong love for animals and dedication to positive client experiences. However, it's important to note a specific critical review regarding end-of-life care for a large breed dog, which suggested a perceived lack of understanding or specialized knowledge for very large breeds in critical conditions. This contrasting feedback highlights the importance of matching a clinic's specific expertise with a pet's unique needs, especially in complex or sensitive situations. The clinic generally receives positive feedback for "basic stuff and smaller animals."

For promotional information, Columbiana Veterinary Associates highlights its long history and commitment to modern veterinary practices. Their website serves as a primary source of information, detailing their mission, services, and team members. They emphasize their full-service capabilities and their commitment to client education. They promote the convenience of their new smartphone app (through VitusVet) which allows clients to manage pet care, request appointments, set medication reminders, and access their pet's medical records. They also promote their online pharmacy (Covetrus) for convenient ordering of prescriptions and pet supplies. The clinic is active in online directories and has a presence on platforms like the Better Business Bureau, reinforcing their legitimacy and professional standing. Their business hours are Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM, and Tuesday and Thursday from 7:00 AM to 6:00 PM, with Saturday hours from 7:00 AM to 12:00 PM. They are closed on Sundays. They refer to emergency clinics after regular business hours, indicating a responsible approach to after-hours care. They accept CareCredit to help clients manage payment for services.

Family owned business. Ultra professional, friendly, and knowledgeable... able to take care of the entire family for the entire life. Exactly what you want in a local professional. We won't go anywhere else.

This place is absolutely pathetic. Nancy, the “office manager” lied right to my face telling me that this office hasn’t accepted new patients in FOUR YEARS! On their website it says that both providers are available for appointments. When I had talked to her about an issue with my pet and asked for specific documents, she was unable to provide it and switched up her storyline multiple times. “Dr” Brian has also disregarded my privacy to my pets medical information. I can no longer get records for MY DOG from these people. Don’t waste your time or money with this circus.

We brought my mom's senior dog in after she had what looked like a seizer/convolution. Sadly she passed away at the vet. But the staff was so friendly, even before she passed they where genuinely compassionate, caring and just helped as much as they could pepper was a fighter!!! I highly recommend
