We love Columbia City Vet! Our first experience with them was when our cat was very sick earlier this year and we sadly had to say goodbye. Their team took such great care of us and explained everything that was going on with the illness, worked us into the schedule when we were as ready as we could be to say goodbye, and the actual event was one of the most compassionate and kind experiences of my life. We truly felt loved by their entire staff, and the signed card that was sent to us a few days later really expressed to us their care. Further, we’ve now been in with our dog for a dental issue and we’re receiving the same care and compassion we were shown the first time. Dr. Lutton has been amazing dealing with our drama-filled chihuahua and has explained everything thoroughly. He was even willing to get her in sooner for a tooth extraction! The clinic is clean and smells amazing, their staff truly cares about you and your pet, and the location is convenient for us. We are looking forward to being long time customers with Columbia City Vet.

The consistent praise in customer reviews highlights their commitment to providing compassionate, thorough, and personalized care for pets and their owners. This veterinary hospital appears to prioritize creating a comfortable and supportive environment while offering a wide range of essential veterinary services.

One of the most striking aspects of Columbia City Veterinary Hospital, as emphasized by multiple reviewers, is the exceptional compassion and empathy demonstrated by their entire team. One pet owner shared their profoundly moving experience when they had to say goodbye to their very sick cat. They were deeply touched by the care and understanding shown by the staff, who patiently explained the cat's illness, accommodated their emotional needs by working them into the schedule, and provided what was described as one of the "most compassionate and kind experiences" of their life. The signed card received afterward further solidified the feeling of genuine care and support from the entire staff, illustrating a level of empathy that goes above and beyond standard veterinary practice.

This same level of compassion extends to other aspects of their care. The same reviewer, who later brought their dog in for a dental issue, noted receiving the same high level of care and compassion. Dr. Lutton is specifically commended for his amazing handling of a "drama-filled chihuahua" and for thoroughly explaining everything related to the dental issue. His willingness to expedite a tooth extraction further demonstrates a commitment to addressing the pet's needs promptly and effectively.

Another recurring positive comment revolves around the clinic's environment. Multiple reviewers describe the office as clean and having a pleasant smell, often mentioning the presence of candles. This attention to creating a comfortable and welcoming atmosphere likely contributes to a less stressful experience for both pets and their owners. One reviewer even noted that their generally anxious dog pulls on his leash to get inside the clinic sooner, a testament to the positive association the pet has with the environment and the staff.

The expertise and thoroughness of the veterinarians at Columbia City Veterinary Hospital are also consistently praised. Dr. Dertinger is specifically mentioned for her exceptional care in treating a dog with recurring ear infections. The reviewer highlighted her caring nature, thoroughness in suggesting and analyzing different treatments, and meticulous review of the dog's medical history and testing results. Dr. Dertinger's commitment to understanding the pet's background and her detailed explanations to the owner instill confidence and trust. Her proactive communication, such as emailing on a Sunday night to schedule an urgent appointment, demonstrates a genuine concern for her patients' well-being.

A significant feature of the care provided at Columbia City Veterinary Hospital is the personalized attention each pet receives. Dr. Dertinger is noted for taking the time to get to know her patients, gathering thorough background information from owners, and patiently answering all questions without making the owner feel rushed. Her practice of sitting on the floor to greet and pet anxious dogs upon entering the exam room exemplifies a patient-centered approach where the pet's comfort is a priority. This "pets truly come first" philosophy resonates strongly with the reviewers.

This vet office is one of a kind! My dog has recurring ear infections, which he has been struggling with since I adopted him earlier this year. Dr. Dertinger has been so caring, thorough, and helpful with treating these infections. She has suggested different treatments and has been meticulous in analyzing whether each treatment was working. She carefully reviewed my dog's past medical records before my first visit and continues to carefully review testing results when they come back. More than that, it is clear Dr. Dertinger really cares about her patients. She takes the time to get to know your pet. She is thorough in getting background information from me, and she is detailed in answering my questions. I never feel like she is in a rush when she is examining my dog. She emailed me once on a Sunday night when a culture came back showing my dog had a nasty ear infection and the office was able to squeeze me in for an appointment the next day. The vet office is very comfortable, clean, and smells nice (they always have candles!). My dog generally is anxious, but when we get to the vet, he pulls on his leash to try to get inside sooner. All of the staff are so friendly and show my dog so much love! When Dr. Dertinger first comes into the exam room, she sits on the floor with my dog and pets him. Pets truly come first in this office, and I cannot recommend it enough.

This isn’t a rant about a one off bad visit at a vet. I’ve been to many vets - from emergency vets, to specialist vets, to just general practice vets. I am grateful for vets and their staff, how hard they work, and all they put up with. When I got my new puppy, I tried Columbia City Vet. First visit was meh, but I gave them a few more chances - things got worse with each visit. This was clearly a management / business issue. I didn’t need a “free” tote bag. I needed competent veterinary services. Columbia City Vet appears to use a one size fits all automated checklist system that does not allow for deviation or individualization. Reminders are great, but multiple reminders for stuff that’s already been done is not reassuring. Unlike other vets where they do most non-surgical treatment like vaccinations (and even euthanasia) and nail trims with you in the room - this place whisks your dog away. My 3 month old pup had no fear of clothes or leashes until they trimmed her nails - its taken months of gentle reconditioning to partially undo whatever they did. Thankfully, I was able to get my pup in at a trusted clinic where they tailor their recommendations and treatment to her specific needs.

Very friendly vets and team members. 1 Our cat was scheduled for an anethesized tooth extraction and during the visit, the doctor called us and said that after getting a better look at x-rays she did not need the full procedure. The cost was reduced accordingly. Appreciate the honesty.

Staff and vets are very friendly and helpful. The place is so clean - absolutely spotless - and nicely decorated. Efficient scheduling and service. There are a few free spots in a lot for tenants of the building including Columbia City Vet just east of the entrance, and the paid parking on the street and a $2/hour pay lot across the street.
