I have serious concerns about price gouging at City Paws. Our dog is on several lifelong medications, some of which are quite expensive, so we fill prescriptions through an online pharmacy to save on costs. City Paws has repeatedly claimed they never received refill requests from the pharmacy—usually right around the time they want us to come in and spend more money. I'll get a call saying our dog needs a visit, so we schedule one. At the appointment, they do no testing—just a quick visual check, ask us why we came in... even though they told us we had to come in—and still charge $60+ for the office visit. I could live with that if it weren’t for what happened next: just two days later, we received another message saying he was due for annual vaccinations. Why wasn’t that addressed at the visit we had just come in and paid for at their request? This kind of nickel-and-diming creates a frustrating customer experience—especially for a dog with vet anxiety. Unfortunately, after several experiences like this, it’s a hard pass for us. Unsurprisingly the administrative side of this vet has always been frustrating. Calling their number drops you into an automated voice system, and 9.5 times out of 10, no one picks up. Showing up for your scheduled appointment only to find the door locked, with the front desk and staff staring at you through the glass without moving to help to let you in—that was another recurring lowlight I won’t miss. We honestly stayed because of how wonderful we found Dr. Nguy -- very knowledgable and so sweet with our dog -- with her gone I'm not going to put up with the subpar experience anymore -- we're moving to a new vet.

City Paws Veterinary Clinic Introduce
Welcome to City Paws Veterinary Clinic, located at 2200 S Vandeventer Ave, St. Louis, MO 63110, USA. As a "Pet Hospital" serving the St. Louis community, City Paws Veterinary Clinic aims to provide medical care for your animal companions. You can contact them at (314) 644-0404 or +1 314-644-0404 to inquire about their services or schedule appointments.
Based on the available customer reviews, the environment and overall experience at City Paws Veterinary Clinic appear to be a point of contention for some pet owners. One recurring theme is frustration with the administrative aspects of the clinic. Customers have reported difficulties reaching the clinic via phone, often encountering an automated system with no one answering. Additionally, there are accounts of arriving for scheduled appointments only to find the door locked and staff seemingly unresponsive to their presence at the entrance. These issues suggest potential shortcomings in the clinic's administrative efficiency and customer service protocols, which can lead to a negative experience for pet owners seeking timely and reliable care.
However, the reviews also highlight positive aspects, particularly concerning the veterinary medical care provided by some of the doctors. Dr. Mattes and her team are commended for going "above and beyond" in treating a cat with repeated urinary blockages, ultimately saving its life. This suggests a dedicated and skilled medical team capable of handling serious health issues. The reviewer also noted the genuine care shown by Dr. Mattes and the overall friendliness and passion for animals exhibited by the staff. Another former client specifically praised Dr. Nguy as being "very knowledgeable and so sweet" with their dog, indicating that some veterinarians at City Paws are well-regarded for their expertise and bedside manner.
The services offered at City Paws Veterinary Clinic likely encompass a range of medical care for pets. Based on the customer reviews, these services include:
- General Veterinary Care: Addressing routine health needs and medical issues in pets.
- Management of Chronic Conditions: Providing ongoing care for pets with lifelong medical conditions, including the prescription of necessary medications.
- Urgent and Emergency Care: The successful treatment of a cat with repeated urinary blockages suggests the clinic can handle urgent medical situations.
- Vaccinations: Routine annual vaccinations are mentioned as a service that pets require.
- Diagnostic Services: While not explicitly detailed, the process of identifying and treating medical conditions implies the use of diagnostic tools and procedures.
- Prescription Medications: The clinic prescribes medications, although some customers have concerns about the pricing and refill process.
- Office Visits: Routine or follow-up appointments with a veterinarian for assessment and consultation.
- End-of-Life Care: Although not directly mentioned, it is a common service offered by veterinary clinics to provide compassionate support during a pet's final stages.
The features of City Paws Veterinary Clinic, as perceived through the lens of customer reviews, present a mixed picture:
- Knowledgeable and Compassionate Veterinarians: Doctors like Dr. Mattes and the former Dr. Nguy are highlighted for their expertise and caring demeanor towards animals. This is a significant positive aspect of the clinic.
- Dedicated Medical Team: The willingness of Dr. Mattes and her team to go the extra mile in treating a critical case suggests a dedicated and committed medical staff.
- Potential Administrative Inefficiencies: Recurring issues with the phone system, locked doors during appointments, and difficulties with prescription refills point to significant administrative challenges that impact the customer experience negatively.
- Concerns about Pricing and Billing Practices: Allegations of price gouging on medications and concerns about the necessity and timing of appointments and vaccinations raise questions about the clinic's billing transparency and practices. The "nickel-and-diming" অভিযোগ suggests a focus on generating revenue that some clients find frustrating.
- Inconsistent Communication: Reports of missed refill requests from online pharmacies and a lack of clarity regarding the necessity of certain appointments indicate potential communication breakdowns between the clinic and its clients.
Promotional information is not available in the provided customer reviews. Veterinary clinics sometimes offer promotions such as discounts for new clients, seasonal specials on preventative care (like heartworm or flea/tick prevention), or bundled service packages. To ascertain if City Paws Veterinary Clinic currently has any promotions, it would be best to contact them directly or check their website or social media, if they have a presence on these platforms. Given the concerns raised about pricing, it would also be prudent for potential clients to inquire about the cost of services and medications upfront.
In conclusion, City Paws Veterinary Clinic in St. Louis, MO, appears to have a dichotomy in its service delivery. While some customers have experienced compassionate and effective medical care from veterinarians like Dr. Mattes and the former Dr. Nguy, there are significant concerns raised by other clients regarding the clinic's administrative practices, communication, and pricing transparency. The recurring issues with the phone system, accessibility during appointments, and billing practices seem to detract significantly from the overall customer experience. Potential clients should weigh the positive feedback regarding the medical expertise of some veterinarians against the negative experiences reported with the administrative side of the clinic. It is recommended to do thorough research and perhaps speak with the clinic directly to address any concerns before entrusting them with the care of your pet.

Mar 27, 2025 · Emma KiokoDr. Mattes and her team went above and beyond in working with me to keep my cat Frank out of the ER due to repeated urinary blockages, and ultimately ended up saving his life! It was heartwarming to see how much they genuinely cared about him and overall the whole staff is very friendly and seem to have a real passion for animals!
Apr 10, 2025 · Caleb WinterCurious how many patients Kelsie has lost this vets office. 😅 This third uncomfortable interaction with her is enough for us to find a new vets office. Incredibly unfortunate because our babies seriously love all of the vet staff here.
Apr 08, 2025 · Amber GannThe day we found out that Dr. McCartney was at City Paws was the best day! One of our dogs has cancer and Dr. McCartney was the first doctor to diagnose what was really wrong. He was taking care of our 3 dogs at a different place, and we were extremely unhappy, when he left. He was always extremely caring, considerate and just the best!!!! At first we just transferred one dog to his care, then we transferred the other two, as well. Thank you, Dr. McCartney for everything you do! Thank you to staff at City Paws for being extremely caring, as well. I am so glad we found you!!!
Dec 30, 2023 · Justyna OverbeyExcellent first visit. Staff, extremely personable & pleasant. Cegi & Dr. Mattes made mywelf and baby Nola feel very comfortable. At 11 weeks Nola was due for a good once over and vaccinations which were all completed efficiently...most of all with great care & concern. Dr. Mattes was knowledgeable; explaining processes well along the way. Ceji created a placard detailing my Pug puppy's 1st visit for a super cute photo op. I appreciated the memory-creator. The clinic is clean, well organized, personally I found the open space very inviting and a lot less claustrophobic. Location is convenient on the Botanical Heights neighborhood just across the street from Don Brown and in the same plaza as Pet Connection. Parking is plentiful. Indoor seating, cat coming towels, treats and resources are available. A reminder was sent for appointment reminder prior to visit as well as discharge summary emailed after her visit. Pricing is reasonable. Nola is looking forward to her next visit already. Recommended!
