I have 2 cats, I brought one into vet for sneezing bouts, vet was great! A few days later the 2nd cat began with the sneezing but was worse, not eating, salivating- when I called they stated they would have to charge an urgent care fee, I would have thought they would either speak to vet for me and get a call back or schedule an appointment for the sicker cat. The urgent fee doesn't really make sense to me because they told me they take walk ins when I scheduled for my 1st cat to be seen, the same day that I called as well, and wasn't charged a urgent fee for him. Looks as if they charge what they feel like for that particular day. Now I'm searching for new vet..

Welcome to Central Hospital For Animals

Welcome to Central Hospital For Animals, a Pet Hospital located in Harrisburg, Illinois, dedicated to providing veterinary care for your animal companions. Situated at 204 E Sloan St, Harrisburg, IL 62946, USA, we aim to serve the local community with a range of services focused on the health and well-being of pets. While specific details about our environment are not extensively described in the provided reviews, you can generally expect a veterinary hospital to offer a clean and functional space equipped for examinations, treatments, and potentially surgical procedures. The focus is on creating a safe and comfortable setting for your pets to receive the care they need.

As a Pet Hospital, Central Hospital For Animals likely offers a variety of services to address the healthcare needs of your pets. Based on standard veterinary practices, these services often include:

  • General Wellness and Preventative Care: This typically involves routine check-ups, vaccinations, parasite control (flea, tick, and heartworm prevention), and nutritional counseling to help keep your pet healthy.
  • Diagnostic Services: To diagnose illnesses and injuries, the hospital may offer in-house laboratory testing (such as blood work, urinalysis, and fecal exams) and imaging services like X-rays.
  • Medical Treatment: The veterinary team is equipped to treat a wide range of medical conditions, providing care for sick or injured animals.
  • Surgical Procedures: Many pet hospitals offer surgical services, which can include routine procedures like spaying and neutering, as well as other soft tissue surgeries. The scope of surgical services available at Central Hospital For Animals would require direct inquiry.
  • Dental Care: Dental health is an important aspect of overall pet health, and services may include dental cleanings and treatment of dental issues.
  • Urgent Care: One of the customer reviews mentions an "urgent care fee," suggesting that the hospital may offer services for more immediate health concerns. However, the application and consistency of these fees seem to be a point of contention for at least one customer.

The customer reviews offer mixed perspectives on Central Hospital For Animals. One reviewer had a positive experience with the veterinary care received for their cat's sneezing, describing the vet as "great!" This suggests that the medical expertise and the interaction with the veterinarian were satisfactory in at least one instance.

However, the same reviewer also expressed significant dissatisfaction with the handling of a follow-up situation involving their second, sicker cat. The experience of being told they would have to pay an urgent care fee, despite the initial cat being seen as a walk-in without such a charge, raised concerns about the consistency and rationale of their fee structure. The reviewer's expectation was that the hospital would either offer a call back from the vet or schedule an appointment for the sicker cat without the urgent fee, especially given the recent visit for the other cat with similar initial symptoms. This experience led the reviewer to seek a new veterinary provider, indicating a negative perception of the hospital's administrative and communication practices in this particular situation.

In contrast, another reviewer had a positive experience, stating that "Both of my fur kids have been well taken care of." They also mentioned referring Dr. Portee to friends and described everyone at the hospital as "so friendly and welcoming," noting that their cat and dog are "happy and healthy." This feedback highlights the friendly and welcoming nature of the staff and suggests that many pets receive excellent care at Central Hospital For Animals.

Based on these reviews, a feature of Central Hospital For Animals appears to be the friendliness and welcoming attitude of the staff, as mentioned by one satisfied customer. Additionally, the positive experience with the vet suggests competent medical care is available. However, a potential area of concern, as indicated by the negative review, might be the transparency and consistency of urgent care fees and appointment scheduling, particularly for follow-up cases.

Both of my fur kids have been well taken care of. I've referred Dr Portee to friends. Everyone there is so friendly and welcoming, and my cat and dog are happy and healthy.

Very friendly staff, the vet, Dr. Portee was extremely talented and very knowledgeable! She gave us all sorts of helpful information and tips She was very nice, easy to talk to and had an excellent bedside manner. They also have multiple locations. Plus she is one of the very few vets left that will crop a Dobermans ears around this location. I would recommend this veterinary service to everyone for all of your pets!

I went to another vet multiple times before for my baby. All they did was give her a cortisone shot over and over again. I knew something else was wrong with her and she needed more treatment than what she was getting. She was itching constantly. Her skin was red and irritated, with sores all over. She started to smell bad. I just couldn't take it. I knew she was in pain. I decided to take her to the central hospital for animals in harrisburg abd they did a full exam of her body. Where the other vet didn't even look.at her. Out in less than 5 mins. This vet was amazing. They actually took the time to investigate what was the problem. They gave her the meds. She's been on them for a month now and my baby is doing so much better! She still itches. But we know what the problem is now. Thank you for the excellent service!

Visited the vet for an accidental potential litter for my Dog and it was the best experience I’ve had going to the vet within the 4years of having my pup. This is the only reproductive health vet in southern Illinois and the best one. Amazing hospitality from the staff, educational, and great humor amongst everyone. If I could have this whole office come to Carbondale I’d pray and pay on it every chance I get. Reasonable pricing and amazing staff. I couldn’t stress it enough.
