My dog started coughing so I took him right to the Brandywine hundred vet. Last year he got the flu and pneumonia and they took very good care of him so when I brought him in the other day they wanted to get him right on an antibiotic so he wouldn’t get as sick as last year.. they remembered the whole ordeal and were very proactive! Kobe got lots of hugs from everyone while he was there!

We entrusted our kitty to BHVH for 6+ years. It is conveniently located, has ample parking, separate waiting areas for cats and dogs, and offers TCM and acupuncture. The office staff is friendly and usually able to schedule you right away. That said, I do not recommend this practice. Our cat was diagnosed with kidney disease. When asked for a prognosis, so as to make a sound decision in treatment, I was told something along the lines of, “it’s pretty bad” and assumed this meant we had days to weeks. I visited 2 days later to learn fluid administration and sent an email ahead of time with questions for the vet. The focus of that email was “what is her prognosis so I can do right by her?” I asked for the stage of the disease, whether we could maintain existing kidney function, and what her prognosis was. A tech received me, unaware that she was to teach sq administration, and unable to answer questions. It was in no way the tech’s fault, but she was unequipped to teach SQs. The vet passed me on the way out and encouraged use of an appetite stimulant. This confused me as it sounded like disease maintenance rather than palliative care. She responded to my email later, sidestepping the larger questions and making the same recommendation. I felt shut down by her apathy and like I didn’t have dependable resources to navigate this. I requested a copy of the most recent labs and was given a copy of the last three. It was shocking to see a note stating >95% certainty of developing this illness and advising aggressive monitoring. This was NEVER expressed to me. Two vets from other practices confirmed that our kitty could have or should have been diagnosed with the disease prior to the terminal stage. Measures could have been taken to delay to inevitable. Navigating so much uncertainty around her impending death was a wrought experience. Do I cancel her auto-ships? Do I cancel my plans? Should I buy 4 cans of food or a whole case? Is she in pain and can we manage it? Should I stay home from work, or will she be declining for months? Is a special diet more important than just calories? Do I continue to administer her other medications or will that compromise her health? Without answers from her doctors, I proceeded to walk a knife’s edge of ignorance in disease management. BHVH was happy to fulfill requests for supplements and prescriptions, but only at my request and not at their recommendation. This compounded my confusion about whether her death was imminent or if they were just apathetic. Loss is a practical experience as much as it is an emotional one. Veterinary medicine is much the same. A doctor has to pair clinical knowledge with emotional insight. In the end, BHVH failed on both accounts. They did not caution me to a likelihood of disease, and once it progressed, they ignored my attempts to advocate on her behalf, leaving me to my own devices to figure out whether I was managing her quality of life. After years as a patient, our girl seemed of no concern to them. No guidance, no follow up, no assistance with euthanasia resources. Just a diagnosis they appeared to have months before. Please be mindful when considering this vet. They couldn’t have stopped our kitty from dying, but they could have provided a standard of care to make it less painful. A simple prognosis would have allowed us to focus our energy on enjoying our remaining time. That is time we will never get back.
