I love this clinic! They saved my sweet baby’s life! It was a Friday afternoon and I just got home from work when I noticed Patches was breathing funny. I called the vet and he told me to bring him in right then. This was 15 minutes before they close. They did X-rays and found he had pneumonia! Gave him steroid shots and medicine to take home. They called me everyday for a week checking on him. We’re here once a month to get an arthritis shot for him and they love him. I love the entire staff and will always be grateful for them saving him. The clinic is clean, affordable, and easy to be seen.

Welcome to Boston Road Animal Clinic

Boston Road Animal Clinic, located at 3650 Boston Rd #142 in Lexington, KY, serves as a cornerstone of compassionate and comprehensive veterinary care for pets in the local community. This "Pet Hospital" has built a strong reputation for providing high-quality diagnostic and preventative care at affordable prices, a combination that resonates deeply with pet owners. Under the ownership of Dr. Karen Young since January 2023, who took over from Dr. Burns (who owned and operated the clinic since 1992), Boston Road Animal Clinic continues its legacy of excellent service, now with enhanced facilities and a renewed commitment to advanced patient care.

Environment and Atmosphere

The clinic's environment is frequently praised by clients for being clean and welcoming. As a small, family-owned practice, Boston Road Animal Clinic cultivates a personal and attentive atmosphere. This contrasts with larger, more corporate veterinary settings, offering a sense of familiarity and individualized care. The staff are described as "very nice" and are consistently noted for their caring demeanor, making both pets and their owners feel comfortable, even during stressful situations. The recent transformations under Dr. Young's ownership, including the addition of new surgery suites, multiple exam rooms, and an on-site diagnostic laboratory, indicate a modern and well-equipped facility that is designed for efficiency and high-quality medical provision while maintaining a warm and inviting feel.

Services Offered

Boston Road Animal Clinic provides a wide spectrum of veterinary services for canine and feline patients, encompassing everything from routine wellness to critical care and end-of-life support. Their comprehensive offerings include:

  • Wellness and Preventive Care: This is foundational to their practice. Services include annual comprehensive exams, customized vaccination protocols (including Rabies, Distemper, Parvovirus, etc.), and crucial parasite prevention options (heartworm, fleas, ticks, intestinal parasites). They emphasize proactive care to help pets live long, healthy lives.
  • Diagnostics: The clinic excels in diagnosing a wide range of conditions. They offer a variety of on-site laboratory tests through IDEXX, including blood work and specialty sick panels for specific pet needs. Their diagnostic capabilities are further enhanced by radiography (X-rays) for definitive views and ultrasound, which can be performed in-house or in partnership with Board Certified Internal Medicine specialists for abdominal ultrasounds and echocardiograms. The ability to perform quick X-rays, as demonstrated in the case of the puppy with pneumonia, is crucial for timely diagnosis and treatment.
  • Surgery: Their equipped surgery suite handles a broad range of procedures, from routine spay and neuter operations and dental cleanings to more complex and life-saving procedures. They prioritize the safety and comfort of pets during surgery, which includes meticulous care.
  • Dental Care: Recognizing the importance of oral health, Boston Road Animal Clinic offers comprehensive dental services, including cleanings, polishing, and assessment for decay or gum issues, all performed under general anesthesia as recommended by the AVMA.
  • Pain Management: They are committed to addressing both acute and chronic pain in pets, offering options tailored to individual needs, from arthritis injections (as mentioned in a review) to other safe and effective pain management solutions.
  • Puppy & Kitten Care: Tailored care plans for young animals, including vaccination schedules, parasite protection, and guidance on nutrition, training, and socialization.
  • End-Of-Life Services: The clinic provides compassionate support during a pet's final moments, including quality of life consultations, euthanasia services, and both private and communal cremation options.
  • Online Pharmacy: For client convenience, Boston Road Animal Clinic offers an online pharmacy, allowing pet owners to easily refill prescriptions and order food and other supplies.
Features and Distinguishing Qualities

Boston Road Animal Clinic distinguishes itself through several key features that resonate strongly with its clientele:

  • Responsive and Life-Saving Emergency Care: The ability to "work in" emergency cases, even just before closing, as evidenced by the case of the puppy with pneumonia, highlights their dedication to patient well-being and their proactive approach to urgent situations. This level of responsiveness provides immense relief and gratitude to pet owners.
  • Compassionate and Caring Staff: Clients consistently praise the "nice staff" who "care about their people." The personal touch, including daily check-up calls for a recovering pet, showcases a profound level of empathy and commitment beyond standard veterinary service. They truly make pet owners "feel like family."
  • Affordable Pricing: The clinic is noted for being "affordable," which is a significant advantage for pet owners seeking quality care without prohibitive costs. This commitment to affordability, combined with high-quality diagnostic capabilities, makes veterinary care more accessible.
  • Comprehensive In-House Capabilities: With new surgery suites, multiple exam rooms, and an on-site laboratory, the clinic is well-equipped to handle a broad range of medical needs, providing a convenient one-stop solution for pet healthcare.
  • Established Legacy and New Vision: Building on over 30 years of service under Dr. Burns, the transition to Dr. Karen Young in January 2023 signifies a blend of established trust and a renewed vision for advanced diagnostic medicine and patient care, promising continued excellence. Furthermore, Dr. Young was joined by co-owner and veterinarian, Dr. Carter Mobley in October 2024, strengthening the veterinary team.
  • Accessibility and Convenience: Located at 3650 Boston Rd #142, the clinic is easily accessible within Lexington. The ease of being seen, as mentioned in a review, suggests efficient operations and a focus on minimizing wait times.

Friendly. Office visit priced better than surrounding vet clinics. Got GSD in the same day!

Very friendly staff. Ridiculous prices. Almost 60 dollars just to be seen, that’s no shots or medication. Then they quote us 400 dollars for the neuter of my 5 lb dog. Most expensive quote I’ve gotten, everywhere else is between 60 to 200 dollars. And they won’t tell you any prices over the phone so you’re forced to gamble and take a chance just to get billed at the end. Definitely won’t be going back. I’m sure they’re knowledgeable in what they do but there’s no reason to break the bank with this place.

I’ve spent nearly $1,500 at this vet in the past three months, only for them to misdiagnose my dog, almost killing him. I first consulted the vet about nutrition and skin issues, but when my dog worsened and began rapidly losing weight, we returned. The vet had a very rude tone as he blamed my dog’s weight on what we were feeding him. We feed our dog better than we feed ourselves, with steak, farm eggs, and rice, among many other things. He condescendingly told us, 'Human food is for humans, and dog food is for dogs.' Not once did this vet take a fecal, blood, or oral sample, which is very disappointing in itself. The vet was more sassy than helpful. Unhappy with this, I took my dog to another vet who took a blood sample and diagnosed him with EPI, a condition in which my dog cannot process food and has essentially been starving for months. This could have been avoided if the vet had simply listened to what we were repeatedly telling him. We were informed that had we waited two more months, our dog most likely would have died. After reaching out to the clinic, we have not received any real answers.
