Welcome to Bortell Animal Hospital

Bortell Animal Hospital, located at 2712 E Lincoln St, Bloomington, IL 61704, USA, is a veterinary care facility that aims to provide comprehensive services for pets. With contact numbers (309) 662-3633 and +1 309-662-3633, the hospital operates within the "Pet Hospital" category, signifying its role as a primary care provider for animal health and well-being. This introduction will detail the environment, services, and features of Bortell Animal Hospital, drawing from publicly available information and customer feedback.

Environment

The physical environment of Bortell Animal Hospital, as a pet hospital, is designed to accommodate various veterinary needs. While specific details about the interior decor or waiting areas are not extensively publicized, a typical animal hospital setting would include a reception area, examination rooms, a surgical suite, and potentially kennels for hospitalized animals. The atmosphere is generally expected to be clean and organized to ensure the health and safety of the animals and their owners. The location on East Lincoln Street places it within an accessible area of Bloomington, Illinois, making it convenient for local pet owners to reach.

Services

As a comprehensive pet hospital, Bortell Animal Hospital offers a range of services essential for maintaining pet health. These services typically encompass:

  • Routine Wellness Exams: Regular check-ups are crucial for preventive care, allowing veterinarians to detect potential health issues early.

  • Vaccinations: Protection against common and serious animal diseases.

  • Diagnostic Services: This may include blood tests, urinalysis, fecal exams, and potentially imaging services like X-rays to diagnose various conditions.

  • Surgical Procedures: Routine surgeries such as spaying and neutering, as well as more complex soft tissue surgeries, are standard offerings.

  • Dental Care: Professional dental cleanings and extractions to maintain oral hygiene and prevent dental diseases.

  • Pharmacy Services: Providing necessary medications, including prescription foods and ongoing treatments.

  • Emergency Care: While not explicitly stated as a 24/7 emergency clinic, most pet hospitals provide some level of urgent care during their operating hours.

Customer reviews specifically mention the availability of prescription food and medication, indicating that these are services provided by the hospital. The interaction with a "Vet Nurse" like Marlene, as mentioned in a review, highlights the presence of a dedicated support staff, which is integral to the delivery of veterinary services.

Features and Customer Experience

Bortell Animal Hospital’s features, beyond its core services, are largely defined by the interactions between its staff and clients. One recurring theme in customer feedback is the compassion and dedication of Dr. Bortell. One review praises Dr. Bortell and his staff for their compassionate approach and for taking their time with pets, specifically mentioning Marlene, an "awesome Vet Nurse." This suggests a personalized and caring approach to veterinary medicine, where the focus is on the individual needs of each animal.

However, customer experiences also highlight some significant challenges, particularly concerning administrative functions and communication. Several reviews point to issues with the front desk staff, describing them as "constantly rude and completely unhelpful." Specific incidents cited include refusal to offer suggestions for obtaining medication, lack of follow-up calls regarding messages left for appointments, and refusal to sell prescription pet food to a long-standing client without confirmation from another clinic, even in urgent situations. These accounts suggest that while the veterinary care itself may be highly regarded, the customer service aspect at the front desk can detract significantly from the overall client experience. The lack of communication, such as not returning phone calls or following up on a pet's condition, has also been a point of contention for some clients.

Promotional Information and Public Perception

Based on the provided information, the primary promotional aspect of Bortell Animal Hospital stems from the reputation of Dr. Bortell himself, especially his compassionate care. Positive word-of-mouth regarding the medical treatment and the demeanor of the veterinary professionals, like Dr. Bortell and Marlene, would naturally serve as a strong promotional tool. The hospital's long-standing presence, having previously operated as Herrin Animal Hospital, also suggests a legacy of service within the community.

However, the significant negative feedback regarding administrative staff and communication issues could present a challenge to their public perception and promotional efforts. For a pet hospital, positive client testimonials are invaluable, and while the clinical care appears strong, the reported difficulties in basic client interactions could overshadow the quality of medical services. Addressing these concerns would be crucial for enhancing the hospital's overall reputation and attracting new clients. For instance, an improved client communication system and staff training focused on empathy and problem-solving at the front desk could significantly improve the client experience and, consequently, the hospital's public image. While no specific ongoing promotions or discounts are mentioned in the provided text, the focus remains on the quality of care and the professionalism of the medical staff.

Dr. Bortell has been my vet since this clinic was Herrin Animal Hospital (so, for quite some time). Things went well over the years until my oldest dog started to have health issues. The lady that runs the front desk is constantly rude and completely unhelpful. My dog was hospitalized at the UofI for kidney disease and acute pancreatitis this past August. When she was discharged I was travelling out of town so my adult child came to the clinic to get some blood pressure medication. The receptionist (sits on the right as you walk in) just flat out told my child that "we don't have that" and refused to even offer suggestions on how we could obtain the medicine. No suggestions, no try another clinic, no we will order it for you just give us a few days. My daughter called me in tears feeling helpless knowing that our dog would die without the medicine. Thankfully she asked the pharmacist at Walmart while she was picking up her own prescription and they were MORE than helpful and helped transfer and fill the prescription. Fast forward a few weeks, our dog was showing issues again and i called the clinic (nobody ever answers the phone) so i left a message asking if i could bring her in for a weight check and a blood pressure check. NOBODY EVER CALLED ME BACK!!! Fearing our dog might need to be hospitalized again and after hours waiting for a return phone call (that even months later has never happened), i called SmartVet with the same questions. They immediately answered and said for me to being her in that afternoon. I did, and with the info in hand did take her back to the UofI for a hospitalization. I should note that after being a client for 15+ years they never ONCE called to see how our dog was...whether she was alive or dead...crickets. Today we thought we were end of life and took her to SmartVet for a vitals check. Thankfully her vitals are strong and we did bring her home but I was out of her prescription food. We tried going to Bortell knowing they always have lots of food on hand and the receptionist REFUSED to sell us the food they had on hand. I even clarified that she has NO food and did they really want to send a long-standing client away without food. The receptionist theoretically asked Dr. BORTELL and yes, they refused our request. Not once did she offer to call SmartVet to confirm her need/prescription...nothing. She was just rude and completely uncaring. Let me be clear that I've now spent in excess of $13k in vet bills since August. My dog is VERY sick. I could not be more disappointed and disgusted with how we have been treated by this clinic. Perhaps the receptionist should have looked but our 2nd dog IS STILL A PATIENT OF THIS CLINIC before being so rude, but no. I wasn't completely done with them until now. I will NEVER EVER EVER give this clinic a dime of my money as long as that horrible woman works there. Shame on you, Dr. Bortell. She will single handedly ruin your practice. The fact that you won't take action to correct the situation or show even a moment of concern for your patients if they are anything but healthy has lost us as clients forever and I will surely be sharing our story with anyone who will listen.

My dog has been going to Bortell's for a year and we love this place! We've had a couple of emergency visits and Dr. Bortell has always been reassuring and has recomended home remedies when possible. Our dog is pretty skittish but she's always excited to go to her vet, because she gets lots of love and good treats!

We have had 3 dogs over the years and all have been lovingly attended to by the staff and Dr’s at Bortell Animal Hospital. They always take time to answer any questions and treat our dogs as family, which they are. If you need vet care, a simple check up or anything else, they have a great facility and better people.
